Please clairify your intentions for us so we don't show up unwelcome on your ride in July. Bob Carleson There are plenty of organized rides for traditional dirt bikes. But for Big Dog, a highly technical, invitation only ride held somewhere in the west above 10,000 feet each late August, there are (to my knowledge) no ride events in the west designed for off-road riding of large displacement dual sport motorcycles. Big Cat was conceived to address this gap. It was also decided to make the Big Cat ride less rigorous than Big Dog (where most participants are somewhat nuts (a complement to Big Dogs) and don't mind doing a lot of repairs on their thrice dropped bikes - once in the middle of a stream - etc. when they return. Big Cat is orientated more towards the rider of the large displacement dual sport who may not ride his bike a lot (or any) in the dirt in relatively remote locations. Big Cat will do graded dirt, jeep trails, perhaps some single track, maybe even a stream or two.... but not 30 degree grade, boulder strewn, goat tracks, rapidly flowing two/foot deep river/streams, wet double two x four make shift bridges such as Big Dog does. Don't get me wrong. Big Cat will be fairly rigourous... covering up to 200 miles of dirt in one day in a remote part of the west - this time The Deep Creeks (we may change it to the Pilots - also with a Wendover base based on BLM advice - they say the riding is higher, better scenery etc. than what is allowed in the Deep Creeks). So... while traditional dirt bike riding (350 cc range etc. as you point out) is a great motorcycle activity it is not what we are about in Big Cat. We made the concession to allow the KLR 650's, the KTM 620's, the Beemer F650's etc. etc. as they could accomodate themselves to the type of ride we would do. These bikes (600's) could be ridden comfortabley to and from the event as well. The smaller bikes (350 cc etc.) bikes would change the nature of what we were trying to do. We want our riders to "ride in" not "trailer in," also the 350 would cleary outperform the "behemouths" in the dirt.... the two different sized bike categories would just not be compatible for this type of event. We have about 15 signups now (along with 4 maybes) and will cap the attendance at 30 (our sponsors will only buy so many steaks!). I'll put you on our distribution list. Hope you can come but gotta have the bigger bike! I hope this answers your question. Anyone else who wants to be put on Big Cat distribution list please email me. I'll make sure that grease slinger is more careful when I, er, he puts things back together. Thanks for any help and all ribbing will be richly deserved. John B P.S. Anyone heard about or talked to Sherfy? I'll probably call Bea tonight if I don't hear back from anyone. **************************************************************** The Beehive Beemers Internet Mailing List http://www.beehive-beemers.org **************************************************************** ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jess Jensen Subject: BB: Bike Joke Date: 09 Mar 2000 09:27:23 -0500 = Dennis, the loudmouth mechanic, was removing the cylinder heads from the motor of a Bike when he spotted the famous heart surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey, who was standing off to the side, waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his Bike. I want to help so please do not take this only as a bitch session. I was trying to figure out my riding schedule for this year and am unable to find any information online about the Red Rocks Rendezvous which leads me to believe that attendance may be small because there is no mention of it on the Beehive Beemers web page, the BMWMOA Rally Listings, or an announcement on the IBMWR mailing list. If the club wants this rally to rank up there with the 49er, or Sipapu, the news needs to be out there as people are making their riding plans now. I have never done the 49er and after reading their web page I am definitely going. But I can't make a decision about the June 23rd weekend because there is no info available. I know that you all volunteer your time and efforts to the club so please do not take this as an attack because I am willing to help. I want the first RRR to be a success just as much as Crit and all others who have already spent a lot of time into it. Please let me know how I can help. Am curious to hear how the R-cubed discussion went. Do we have any new volunteers? Also had a thought regarding dinner. Hope we haven't inked any deal yet with Janet Oldham and the Flying "M" given the prices she had quoted. Here's another option worth pursuing if it's not too late: Cowboy's Smoke House Cafe at 95 North Main, (676-8030). They're somewhat famous for their bar-b- que, beans and pototo salad. Had dinner there a couple of years ago and it was great. Perhaps they'd set up shop on the Fairgrounds with the smell of mesquite permeating the air. Might be worth getting a price from them. Perhaps the Flying "M" could be more reasonable with a breakfast option, if we're still thinking of doing a breakfast. John can now talk, he's getting O2 but is on his own, breathing-wise, and his color really looks good. He is in much better spirits now that he can talk (surprise!) and is getting along well with the nursing staff-- they take really good care of him. One thing John mentioned was how glad he was to be able to get some decent sleep now that the tube is out. Crit and I met at the hospital and went in together, they were expecting us at the Neuro- Intensive desk so were able to spend about 40 minutes with John. John is in really good spirits, he really appreciated the motorcycle poster his doctor brought in and hung on the wall where John could see it--even it if is a brand X motorcycle, as Crit and I kidded him about it. It's really great to see our friend get on the mend! I didn't have any trouble getting in when John was up on 4th floor, but with the move to 3rd floor Neuro ICU I was denied entry on Tuesday and only got in tonight because I called while Bea and family were there, so they left instructions at the desk to allow Crit and me in. Bea tells me that her neighbor, who is on the board of directors for the U of U hospital, was told on the phone that he wouldn't be allowed entry if he showed up-- I'd like to be a mouse in the corner when he gets to the front desk! I'm hoping that John will be moved from ICU soon, that should open things up as far as visitors. For now, that's all I know. On 16 Mar 00, at 21:20, Rick P. wrote: > DeVern, > Thanks for the report. However, this was not the really strange part. What really left me wierded out was when I decided to use your photo and my new duplexing color printer at work to create for myself a duplicate driver's license with YOUR photo on it. The gold hologram thingy was the hard part, but I got around that by shooting the holo photo in the lab and printing it onto plastic film which I then trimmed and sandwiched under the laminated cover over the entire license. Anyway, I thought it was going to be great having the spare license. Unfortunately, I got stopped by a local LEO on the way home and when I pulled out the new license and handed it to him, he turned it over to double-check one of the endorsements. Suddenly, he let out a choked scream and threw the license on the ground, then drew his service weapon and fired two or three times and the fallen permit. He then holstered his weapon, gave me a VERY stern lecture about transporting materials like that and about how I could be turned over to the Utah porn czar just for possessing it, then inexplicably he said "just get outta here, I gotta go home and wash out my eyes with strong soap." Well, you know me, I'm never one to hang around once dismissed by the friendly LEO, but in this case I did stick around just long enough to retrieve my spare license. Imaging my surprise and shock when, a mile or two down the road, I realized that the LEO had punched a coupla holes in the body of the license but had missed the photo--so, I turned it over and was shocked to discover that my duplexing printer had retrieved and printed the BACK SIDE OF YOUR PHOTO. Mein Gott in Himmel, I ran straight home and washed my own eyes out with strong soap, so much so that I can barely see to type this tale. Anyway, I hope whatever condition it is that you have back there heals soon, and you should be aware that modern-day plastic surgery can straighten a crooked smile even back there..... :^) :^) Best, DeVern On 22 Mar 00, at 15:17, Robert H Jensen wrote: > A friend of mine was concerned enough to send the web address of a > site where every ones driver license photo's are available , is this > Brig brother or what ?? > > www.asweseeit.com/616LicenseForm.htm > DeVern Gerber gerberd@mtwest.net '83 R80ST '95 R1100RSL (Das Amsdel) Fliegen Sie Hoch und Schnell! **************************************************************** The Beehive Beemers Internet Mailing List http://www.beehive-beemers.org **************************************************************** ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jeb Berg Subject: BB: RE: Rentals Date: 22 Mar 2000 15:54:52 -0700 Roi, BMW ON March 1999 - Moturis, Ltd ( www.motus.com).
