DeVern: Don't you think it's a bit odd that Honda, after "improving" the aged ST 1100 is using a 5 speed gearbox and only offering a 480 watt charging system? Pretty weak for a sports tourer. But it does look nice. Also seems like they could have knocked a bit more than 30 pounds off the portly St 1100.. I guess by that you imply that it should have had a 6-speed box. In truth, 6-speed gearboxes only matter if you are in marketing or if you are riding a peaky, underpowered sports bike. A sport-tourer with 120hp on tap doesn't need 6 speeds, and one would be better served if the company spent the extra expense and complexity in improving other areas-- reliability, ergos, braking, handling, etc.-- or in adding a respectable, say 740 watt, charging system.... 480 watts is inadequate. If Honda has traded mid-range torque for horsepower, then the 6- speed would make sense. Given that the new ST carries a fair bit of additional displacement over the old bike, I'd suspect not much has changed in the mid-range. If anything, it should have improved with the fuel injection. > > Pretty weak for a sports tourer. But it does look nice. Also seems > like they could have knocked a bit more than 30 pounds off the portly > St 1100.. Weight is still the main problem with the ST. Like the earlier K- bikes, it's partly a function of where, in CG terms, the weight is carried. I haven't ridden the ST yet, just pushed it around in the parking lot, and in that environment it is every bit as top-heavy and unwieldy as the K100 or K1100LT. At 550-575 lbs, the ST or the K11LT would both be vastly better. Whether riding, pushing, or parking--less is always better when it comes to MC weight. Maybe BMW will get in the picture with a R1300RS, or R1300RT..... or trim 40-50 lbs from the K12RS.... OTOH, I'm thinking maybe we should both just say to hell with it and buy new K12LTs. =:^0 Best, DeVern DeVern Gerber gerberd@mtwest.net '83 R80ST '95 R1100RSL (Das Amsdel) Fliegen Sie Hoch und Schnell! **************************************************************** The Beehive Beemers Internet Mailing List http://www.beehive-beemers.org **************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Sep 2001 09:04:08 -0400 From: Bob Subject: Re: BB: Re: Hmmm, serious competition in the sport-touring arena...
