I try to ride year round and am always interested in safety tips. The following tips are from an email discussion on the Long Distance Rider list and is forwarded with permission from the author. I avoid riding in snow and ice, but sometimes I get caught in some unexpected weather. If you have tips or suggestions for winter riding, please share. Tips from Chuck Hickey on riding in snow: 1. Don't do it if it is more than a few degrees below freezing and the sun isn't shining. 2. Stay in the tire tracks when possible 3. If the road starts to freeze - get out of the tire tracks and onto the fresh snow. 4. Look for sand on the snow - the one time when sand on the road is a good thing. 5. Stay out of first gear - accelerate slowly - brake slowly and more importantly smoothly. 6. Snow days are not the time to experiment with lean angles. 7. Some folks have recommended letting some air out of the tires - I can't comment on the validity of this. 8. Be warm - you will be tight enough because of the pucker power generated by the snow - staying warm will help relax you and your grip on the bars. 9. Putting your feet down doesn't help much. 10. Plan ahead - anticipate intersections and avoid hills where you might have to stop for a light - you need to keep moving. 11. some folks have wrapped rope around their wheels in emergency situations. Screws in your tires would be better. 12. Wait until you get home - then help yourself to a big shot of brandy.... you deserve it. 13. Big tip - Call for a taxi. The biggest problem with snow is after you fall down. Not much traction for your tires or your boots, so picking up the bike is problematic, at best. Perhaps Mr. Gerlach would like to comment on this. - --- Ride in the White Stag every year - you will eventually get to ride in some snow, somewhere. chuck h IBA # 197 **************************************************************** The Beehive Beemers Internet Mailing List http://www.beehive-beemers.org **************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Nov 2001 10:32:35 EST From: Swan555@aol.com Subject: BB: Christmas Party and Awards If you haven't sent me your RSVP for the Christmas Party please do. I joined the club last June and have tried to attend every breakfast meeting. I live in Logan and at every meeting heard that we have other club members in the Cache Valley area. I have not met any of the Cache Valley members yet. As I understand the club boundaries, it covers the entire state of Utah. Would there be any interest in forming sub-groups within the club? For example the state could have regional activity groups and rides. It would allow us to meet other BMW riders in our local area who are not interested in traveling to SLC for breakfasts or rides that are far from home. For my part, I love traveling to different parts of the state (any excuse for a ride is a valid excuse for me). In our meeting this morning we discussed recruiting new members. Perhaps a regional approach would be appealing to those who do not live in the SLC area. To all of the new officers, thanks for volunteering and taking time out of your busy lives to support the club and my favorite activity, riding BMW motorcycles. I must take issue, however, with the concept of manning a table to "increase membership." We don't need any more members. In fact, since the club started chasing the idea of larger=better we have, like lemmings rushing toward the sea, ignored what is really happening around us. We have more members now than at practically any other time in club history, yet we have less involvement from the membership that at any time I can remember. I have a lot more to say on this and plan on venting my spleen both in person and in print, but suffice it to say for now that we as a club have lost sight of the fact that bigger isn't better, *better* is better. As you think about the members who time and time again volunteer there time to the club ask yourself, who is going to pick up the ball and run with it in the coming years. Are you running for office next year DeVern? If we followed your policy of not needing new members then the only members of our club would be the original core group of people that started the club. without new members the club will stagnate and start to decline. Active members make a better club and that may mean new members. Just my opinion Jeff Stokes --- DeVern Gerber wrote: > Andy; > > Thanks for the info RE the open house. Hartwig" Subject: BB: Bigger vs. Better? Hi folks: Reading the email and first of all, all people have the right to express opinions. Differing opinions spark creativity. Secondly there is something to be said for the idea that bigger is not always better. Better is better, I agree. Third -- how do you get better -- I suggest it is by getting bigger, getting more ideas; more opinions; more discussion. I've been a member for less than a year and have seen the club from that point of view. It is difficult to get involved with a group of "old-timers" if I can use that phrase, and it has been at times difficult to get involved in this club. No complaining at all, for it just takes some time and effort to get to know some of the members of the club and, overall, I have been welcomed most of the time. But, I really must weigh in on the side of recruitment and opening the doors to all (perhaps I'm just a civil-libertarian or something like that). Old-blood, new-blood, the bottom line to me is enjoying a motorcyle -- BMWs -- and riding with people who enjoy those machines; people who can teach me things about the machines or show me a new road - -- or just share the road. That is why I joined -- and why I would like to see the club grow. Can one really have too many friends? Can a rider really have too much help and companionship? I don't think so.... and, remember -- if the bigger is to become better it takes all of us to work together to bring old and new together and form a club we all want to be members of (is that a split-infinitive?) ... unless that is you're Groucho Marx (Never join a club that'd have him as a member). As a member of a couple of local groups, and president of one, I see them all with the same problem. I'm just happy to see people come out and participate. Let's quit taking this thing so seriously and have fun with it. More power to the "younger" guys or anyone who wants to get involved in making things happen. It ain't like we're running a multi-billion dollar enterprise like ENRON or something. Members will come and go for various reasons. I joined years ago as a charter member, drove up to visit with John Sherfy and learned more about BMW motorcycles in an hour than I had in a couple of years on my own, didn't even go to a meeting for probably ten years until I retired, but have now met some great people that I look forward to chatting with, etc. You young fellas go with it. No drugs and sex though. Well, I guess sex would be okay. DeVern, I understand your complaint and I would say the same if the only thing the elected club officers are trying to do is increase membership. And since it is not, we are hopefully headed in the right direction. The January breakfast meeting gave us a chance to introduce this years calendar to the 47 people in attendance. It was unanimously accepted and will be posted to the web shortly. To tickle your interest, we are planning a lunch ride to Logan, some other club rides, tech sessions on bike to bike communication and GPS, rides to Park City, and other rallies and campouts. In the few years I have been a member I have asked myself why I keep paying my dues when this club does nothing motorcycle related or give me a chance to ride or discuss motorcycles. I feel the small steps we are taking as a board are steps in the right direction. We as a board welcome anyones feedback on the direction we are going as a club and gladly accept your willingness to help. Keep your eye on the web page and in upcoming Stingers for the club calendar and I hope to see you all on the road.
