I went to the site and filled in their survey, which won't win me any friends with the BBS crowd as I do not have any surging problems on my bike. I read through the posts there, mostly just the usual BMW bashing from piss and moan ex- Japanese bike riders who aren't happy because their new European thoroughbred isn't designed to be a boulevard cruiser like their oriental iron was. Perhaps someday the "new converts" to BMW ownership will figure out they've purchased a machine that was made to be ridden, and ridden hard, and will either start to ride the sumbitch or sell it to someone who will. In the meantime, what they will probably accomplish is to force BMW to fatten up the low-speed mixture settings to please the boulevard poseurs, thus messing up for the rest of us both emissions and performance in one swell foop. If they really want to talk about surging, they should go ride the big Suzuki twin (TL1000)... Heck, maybe they'll even get BMW to follow the oriental solution to customer complaints on a particular model-- just obsolete the damn thing, offer up a new, higher-priced replacement, and watch the yapping guppies trip over each other in their haste to impale themselves on the sales hook. I've owned four "oil heads" and have had the problem with all four to varying degrees. They have been and are a joy at speed, but when you live in an urban invironment, a significant amount of time is spent in low speed traffic conditions, and the bucking and jerking is an annoyance. I guess my R51/3, R50, R60, R75/5, R90/6(2), R100GS(2), K100RS, K1 spoiled me that BMWs did and can run smoothly at any speed. Oh,....and damaged goods!! My Saturday was anything but normal. I had the day completely occupied with around the house stuff so the Beemer was to wait 'til Sunday before getting any attention. I had just finished washing the wife's 525iT before she took off with it to a baby shower. Less than five minutes later I get a call from her telling me that I'd want to hop on the bike and ride down to the local lunch stop (Eats of Eden) and take a look. The place is a mile away so I just grab minimal gear and head down. 15 or so bikes that you'd rarely see the likes of up here in Harley country compliments of the Utah British Bike Club. Nortons left and right with a few newer Ducs and to top it off two R1200RS'. I've been contemplating the dark side so I wanted to talk to the owners. Everyone was eating and I wasn't hungry so rather than say a word I headed back home and suited up for a potential group ride. Once back folks were finishing up and the proud owner of the blue K-RS and his son walked out as I was parking. Jesse and I can't remember the last name. Jesse-something-at mindspring.com in fact. If you know him and can finish the address I'd appreciate it. Anyway we chatted for a few and then headed out. I was leading a few folks to 84 via Trapper's Loop. Not far from Trapper's the sky turned dark and the temp started to drop. We were up the road about a mile or two when things went south fast! Gusting winds of 50mph or better with small/stinging hail and driving rain. If you've been atop Trappers you know that there's no place to hide. The rain and light hail were nothing without the wind. It was easily the worse weather I've been caught in. We regrouped at the Sinclair under a little bit of cover at the gas pumps. I continued down into Layton with Jesse and pulled off 89 and worked my way back to Eden through Ogden Canyon. The storm had cleared and the only real signs of it were our lack of power and some standing water, or so I thought. After drying out, I was putting the helmet away when I noticed how dirty the face shield had become. Cleaning it brought a painful realization to light. The shield was pitted due to airborne sand and sub-pebble sized rock bits. I had that sinking feeling that my perfect 00 S had not escaped unscathed. A quick trip to the garage confirmed it. Headlight, pitted. Windscreen, pitted. I'm afraid to wash it and look at the paint. Knowing what has to be the outcome, I've filed my insurance claim. Now, who are the right folks I need to do business with to get my S back into the shape it was in before Saturday? Hopefully in something of a timely matter too. I need some good references if any of you have them. My first call is going to be to Mike Clark and the boys in SLC. Can I hear some advice from those of you that have been down this road before? Thanks, and I hope you had a good ride or two this weekend. Some interesting suggestions for a GS ride. Buck Russell Chip Robie wrote: There is a possibility that the 2003 MOA Nationals may be held in Lizard Lick, NC, halfway between Clayton and Lucama. There will be camping available near the famous windmill farm of Vollis Simpson, where giant colorful motion sculptures perpetually gyrate in the wind. Several games of bovine pie bingo will run concurrently. Following the bingo games, the bingo fields will be used for field events with new incentives for accuracy. Two new "field" events will be introduced by Cole Mills. In the forty acre field next to the Vollis Simpson Mills, the TCWINNH(tm) Corporate Orchestra will be issuing forth a Friday night concert, featuring the 1812 Overture and the entire sound track to Caddyshack, complete with all the explosions. We'll have the Torture Twins cage dancing as crater-whomping claymores create delightful mushroom clouds followed by an exhilarating shower of pulverized clay, bits of gravel, and the odd dollop of nitrogen-enriched cow contributions. Following the concert, the craters will be equally divided into men's, ladies, and gender-neutral latrines. TP for the event has been donated by the Zebulon Crier in the form of sixteen thousand Homely Depot Sunday inserts that didn't make it to distribution. Oh, sure, they're a little large, but they're easy to tear down into the size you need, and work great as long as you don't mind a little orange newsprint smear on your fern from time to time. The local representatives of BOAF (the Bubbas of America Foundation) have arranged to shoot the Wendell water tower with enough buckshot to create the world's largest and longest lasting shower that should run for the duration of the entire rally. Cameo spots for TV are possible, as film crews from Guinness Book of World Records, Ripley's Believe it or Not, That's Incredible!, and David Letterman's "Stupid People Tricks" are currently expected to appear on various days of the shower. Final arrangements have not been secured, but there is a chance that one of the BMW Airhead members from Oregon may provide small imprinted-logo BMW towels for the rally Mega-Shower goers. A film crew from "Jerry Springer" has offered to film the towel distribution. The BOAF members will also be hosting a philanthropy event for the younger members, a two-day mini-adventure called Camp Greentooth. Big BOAF role models will introduce prospective Bubbas under the age of 16 to the benefits of Bubbadom. On Friday and Saturday, Bubba Seminars will be held on Whizzin' in the Woods, Adding Nitrous To Your Lawn Tractor, Fixin' Stuff with Duct Tape, Lightin' the Grill with LOX, and The Fire Department is Your Friend. As always, the BOAF role models can provide additional instructions on a hygiene-optional lifestye upon request. Rally food will be catered by the Garner Toot-N-Tell restaurant in conjunction with Smithfield Barbeque, providing hot delicious staples for the duration. Rally attendees will be able to enjoy delicious eggs, grits, sausage, fatback, back bacon, biscuits, gravy, pork barbeque, slaw, hush puppies, Brunswick stew, fried chicken, and a mess of collard greens with pepper vinegar. Lots of apple and cherry cobbler and mee-maw's banana puddin' for dessert. Those who are unable to appreciate the finer points of the culinary offerings will be handed pre-printed directions to the Cracker Barrel restaurant twelve miles away in nearby Smithfield-Selma-Kenly. Adventure GS rides will tour the various landfills of Kenly, Micro, and Wilson's Mills, connected by Fire Trail and powerline road cuts. Prizes are given for the largest bear seen at the landfill and for the most creative artwork performed using only roadkill as materials. We all still smile when we remember Nate Birkholtz' impressive Possum On A Tricycle entry from years past ... Other events are lining up faster than blue bottle flies on a fresh field bingo marker, so I'm getting pretty excited at the possibility of the big event coming to Eastern NC. The local boys are out scouting around for more hardware, and soon the woods are gonna be full of freshly scavenged radiators and perfumed with the smell of sweet mash Johnston County prepares for the potential crowd of world-travelers on two wheel boxers. I know it's a little bit in poor taste to release this information early, especially when the extravaganza could potentially steal the thunder of the upcoming (and I'm sure every bit as fine) MOA 2002 rally, but I think the Kiltmeister would understand. Trenton will be fantastic, I'm sure. It's just not fair to compare it to the excitement of the tobacco fields, pit latrines, and Camp Greentooth events that Lizard Lick will have to offer in '03. Does anyone have this new detector, if so how do you like it?? Biggest question is, how can it (or can it) be modified to have an earplug jack?? Seems to be a good detector but without the earplug, won't be much good on the bike. I've used up about 8 of my 9 lives in the last few weeks and it's time to join the modern world and get some protection. thanks John B **************************************************************** The Beehive Beemers Internet Mailing List http://www.beehive-beemers.org **************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jun 2002 12:30:35 -0700 (PDT) From: "Jeff S."
