A few thoughts and implications from "Angel": Judging by this episode, there wouldn't be any good vampires in the Buffyverse except for unique cases like Angel. The person turned into a vampire loses his soul and becomes (is replaced by?) a demonic being. So only if something very unusual happens (like the gypsy curse on Angel) can a vampire be anything other than evil. Are there any physical effects of Angel having a soul, things that make him different from other vampires? Would he show up in a mirror or a photograph? Is he better able to resist the usual vampiric weaknesses, such as religious objects? Is he more vulnerable than other vampires to magic spells that normally only affect humans? Angel has a normal sort of lifestyle, living in an apartment with a refrigerator and all that. How does he pay his rent? Does he have job as a night watchman somewhere? Is he a published author of very authentic historical novels (or horror novels)? Did he acquire a collection of valuable jewelry while terrorizing Budapest as Angelus? Or has he just been collecting a pension for 175 years? Angel and Xander could have an interesting conversation. Angel has a past in which he did horrendous things he now regrets, and Xander experienced something like that in "The Pack", turning on his friends in ways he regrets. ____ Theodore Miller SCTQ91A@PRODIGY.COM ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Apr 1997 19:06:46 GMT From: Flagg@wwa.com (Randall Flagg) Subject: Re: BUFFY: WGN stuff On Tue, 15 Apr 1997 15:25:56 GMT, you wrote: >On Tue, 15 Apr 1997 09:43:00 -0400 (EDT), you wrote: > >>For WGN watchers: There was a note during last night's (April 14/15)=20 >>episode that the next episode would be shown at a "special" day and = time: >>Saturday, April 26.=20 >> >>I may have misread this, so could someone else who watched (and taped) = it >>on WGN confirm this, and check the time? And I thought -- why sholud every vampire follow the rules? Bite, shmite -- why not tote a piece? There you go, right from the creator's mouth. It was definitely an homage to John Woo movies... =20 And that comment about musicals...now how could they work in musical-type scenes into BtVS? Or have they done it already? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Apr 1997 13:47:02 -0600 From: pearss@saraleebake.com Subject: BUFFY: Spoiler "Angel" ep Date: 04/15/1997 01:59 pm (Tuesday) From: Sean Pearson To: Buffy Subject: BUFFY: Spoiler "Angel" ep SPOILER pad for "Angel" ep follows: Okay, this may rankle many of you, but this was the weakest of the BtVS eps so far. Avoiding the ire of our ListKeepers will be a challenge, but here's why I wasn't pleased with "Angel": 1. The trend towards these vamps as Anne Rice-types is disappointing. A vampire as a demon in the vessel of soulless human shell--that makes a great foundation for a storyline. The "romantic", Gothic legend is tiresome by now. Since Buffy is supposed to slayer other monsters, too, why not try a novel approach instead of this overheated angst-ridden archetype? 2. The concept of evil is best defined as a conscious decision to pursue entropy over order. A truly evil character is fully capable of doing great good; Angel is more evil than the Master, then, and should have been either destroyed or captured in the ep. He could teach Buffy a great deal about vamps and give her all the knowledge she needs to completely purge the town in one Herculean effort, but ultimately he is not "noble" or "tragic" anymore. Pity him, marvel at the strength of his restored soul, and stake him. Period. 3. Buffy's strength and *superpowers* are sporadic. In one ep she's a raging suprahuman, in the next she's nearly normal. The 3 were tough muthas, sure, but if the series even tries to incorporate pieces of the movie, she shouldn't be so spotty. When a Slayer gets careless, a Slayer dies. And I agree with many of you: By now she should be packing at least one weapon at all times, and so should her friends. I know -- suspension of disbelief -- but this is tantamount to suicide! 4. Giles is nearly a failure as a Watcher so far. I know that will upset all the GASPers, etc., and I'm sorry. But while he isn't expected to have Buffy's innate talents as a fighter, he IS supposed to do a better job tracking and researching the threats before they *become* threats for the Slayer. Dramatic license aside, his tendency to say "oops" is becoming his mantra. It's fortunate for Buffy that she has such incredibly loyal and gutsy friends in the form of Willow and Xander; they do a great job bridging the gaps left by Giles. I hope the writers explore the potential of bringing Romani into a storyline, esp. the chance of a recurring role. If any culture comes close to the epitome of slayer-breeders, it would have to be the Rom. Bump Angel out (slowly, okay, for all you Angelites) and replace with an exchange student -- a young Gypsy man from Spain, northern Italy, or Romania. *That* would be a great partner for Buffy and perhaps a decent buddy for poor Xander. I really like this series. These actors are terrific and the dialogue is usually crackling with wit and life; I can picture real teenagers behaving and talking just like this. I just didn't think this last ep was up to previous standards. So now I cringe, awaiting a flood of flames and hate mail... (esp from the Pres. of the GASPers herself). I think Giles is just now really learning how to be a Watcher and hasn't gotten all the problems worked out on how to go about doing it. Even ASH says that Giles really doesn't know what he is doing and is learning it as he goes. It's one thing to read about slyaying vamps and another thing entirely to actually try to train someone to do it. I bet if the series is allowed to go on that he'll get better, but of course his slight ineptness adds to his appeal, though it can be downright deadly to those around him, and painful to him as we have seen. Others: 1 - suicides, murder victims, the drowned, stroke victims 2 - excommunication from church, alcoholics, troublesome people, ect.... 3 - werewolves in life 4 - conceived during a holy period on the church's calendar(sex was a sin on these days, even for the married folks) 5 - illegitimate offspring of parents who were also illegitimate 6 - birth defects such as born with teeth, extra nipples, lack of cartilage in the nose, split lower lip, "fur" other than hair on the head 7 - witches in life 8 - born with two hearts (hey, that's what they thought) 9 - born with amniotic membrane still over its head, referred to as a red caul 10 - red birthmarks or red-faced upon death 11 - the sucking thing, but folklore vamps tend to bite into the thorax and not the neck 12 - an animal jumping over or a bat flying over a corpse can create a vampire, sometimes even wind blowing over it 13 - a deceased's brother is a sleepwalker 14 - if in life their shadow is "stolen" (driving a nail through the shadow's head) 15 - first person to die in an epidemic 16 - unattended corpses, those left unburied or not buried deep enough 17 - violent or "quick deaths" of whatever variety, not living out their allotted life span So, that's my list of how a vampire is made ... born ... whatever. The Buffy people seem to like this whole "sucking thing" but just to show they have some more options and that Rice, Stoker, and even Joss do not have true canon on a subject that has been about since time began. No offense Sharon, but first off everyone's entitled to their own opinion and second, there have only been a few postings about Xander. If you count all of the postings about Giles, you'll see that your man has about 20 times more postings than our Xander. Dramatic license I agree with this, too. If he's known since he was 10 that he was going to be a Watcher, you'd think he'd know a bit more about some things, such as that every-100-years thing. Maybe Giles spent a lot of time in denial, hoping he wouldn't have to take over as Watcher, so he didn't prepare. Rebelling against fate? Maybe he didn't have access to the previous Watchers' materials until recently (for whatever reason)? > So now I cringe, awaiting a flood of flames and hate mail... What for? You stated your opinions well and politely. I didn't see any flame-bait here. You can come out from under the desk, now. He is one of my favorite characters for alot of different reasons. In his defense, first off he is 16. Alot of his obsession with Buffy comes from that fact. Yeah he go's out of his way to impress Buffy and women in general but he is always struck down which Im sure isnt good for his ego. He trys to compensate it with humor but sometimes he only makes matters worse. Also he isnt that popular a kid in school he hung with a small group of friends (Willow and Jesse) and is one of the school outcasts. Now I dont recall a scene where Buffy comes right out and tells Xander "Stop making passes at me and leave me alone.". In some ways I think she likes the attention the same way Xander likes Willow's attention. I think the jealousy thing is funny. I also think eventually there will be an ep where she sits Xander down and lays it all on the line. As for how he treats Willow, she is his best friend and I think eventually he will see that she is the best person for him. But still he is 16 and you make a lot of stupid mistakes and say alot of stupid things at that age. Xander many more positive qualities then negative. He risks his life for his friends and faced certain doom to rescue Jesse. Willow is quite bright and I doubt she would have hung around him since he was 5 if he wasnt a great friend. He is funny and trys to make the others feel better when they are down. I think deep down he knows he will never be with Buffy but he just has to learn it.
