I'm Rebecca and I'm a Buffy obsesee (everyone say Hi Rebecca). I got hooked on this show from the first episode. It's a great mixture of adventure and humor, and besides I love all the characters. Just a little example of my obsessiveness, I thoguth it would be better to share this with people who would actually understand than with my friends (who I think I am starting to scare :) I had all the Buffy episodes on tape but then I decided that I wanted them all on the same tape with the commercails cut out so I spent a Saturday transferring 5 episodes to the other tape, my mom kept coming in and saying.."you're still watching this garbage"..she doesn't like vampires. I was doing kicks and throwing punches in my sleep. Want to know how much I love Angel? I've watched the episode three times so far and it's only Thursday. At first, I just loved him. He was cute and funny and stuck up for his friends. But now, he's just annoying. He's always making passes at Buffy, and complaining to Willow about Angel. He can't stand to see Buffy happy with anyone but him. If he really did love her, he would be glad to see her happy even if it wasn't with him. He's still cute, but Angel is much more attractive to me since "Angel". S P O L I E R I know he's a vamp, but that's what's so sweet. He knew that he couldn't be with Buffy, so he didn't try anything. He just watched out for her and tried to stay away, but he couldn't. That last scene was so sweet. The pain of losing her was enought so that he didn't even seem to notice his new scar. If I keep thinking of this I'm going to cry. (Okay - outside of the fact the Master is a fictional immortal demon and the others are real....) There are always followers to someone who has something to offer. Be it a dream, an ideal or belief system. Bear in mind - the typical vampire is more powerful than a human - though they have restrictions (sunlight, diet etc.) At the same time - picture a charismatic version of a vampire and add to the mix possibly the "father" of all vampires. Who else would they rally around? (Yikes - - I'm starting to think of Lorien in B5 here!) The one thing I see in The Master is - he is able to see the "big picture" where so far - the others have only seen glimpses of what is immediately possible. Almost a lack of imagination. Laura J. Manipulating Angel's primal desires and setting him up with the limp body of the Buffster's mom, was pure genious. Maybe it's just because I have a thing for evil characters, but I think eliminating Darla was a huge mistake. I have to agree with some earlier comments that by constantly axing some of the "main" characters, it makes character development much more difficult. One of the definitions given in Webster’s Dictionary - and the one applicable here - is: The moral, or emotional nature of a person. Angel reveals to Buffy: ‘The demon takes your body but doesn’t get your soul. No conscious, no remorse. It’s an easy way to live.’ An empty vessel doomed for eternity to an empty existence, which in a way makes sense. But in succumbing to this, all free will is lost as well - it’s not just ‘survival’ now, but to serve the Master. The feeding is secondary. By regaining his soul, Angel has broken away from tradition. He abhors what he has become and what the Master stands for. He has chosen to live above ground and not to feed on humans. And in his most rebellious act, fallen in love with the one person who is their sworn enemy. The Slayer. In loving her and gaining her love in return, even in his true face, he has redeemed himself. After all, if ‘the chosen one’ can see his pilgrim soul, then he has succeeded on the path to redemption. This all fits in fine with his explanation. What confuses me is Darla.. she tells him, with a bitterness born of jealousy: "Do you know was the saddest thing in the world is? To love someone who used to love you." I don’t know, maybe I’m misinterpreting this, but doesn’t this sound like remorse of unrequited love? She goes further to illustrate this by only wounding Angel, instead of killing him. After he betrayed them repeatedly she only shoots him once. Telling Buffy that bullets can’t kill vampires, but they hurt like hell. And when he plunges the arrow through her heart - an ironic symbol of love - she turns to him and acts surprised and shocked at his ultimate betrayal. He, so repulsed by the act of killing, even someone as loathsome as Darla, staggers back and walks away... Confused and maybe a little frightened by the depth of his love for Buffy. Both suffer remorse, both have a conscious. One driven my jealousy one by love. I believe then, that the soul or what constitutes a soul is not lost and replaced when the body gets taken by the demon, but submerged, and the darker, negative aspects come to reign leaving them seemingly without a conscious or remorse at the hideous acts they are forced to perform. Or maybe I’m just taking this whole thing too seriously. What can I say? I’ve never been much for vampire movies or TV shows.. but this one intrigues me-big time. This series has more heat and mystery going for it than the Kindred could ever hope to conjure. Buffy and Angel rule! Here's the main part of the story: Dannick Jerrio's species has to suck people's "soup" (their power) from their body. He is going to take Luke's and Ben's, but they are too strong, so he settles on Han Solo, but cannot get to him. The story is continued in Tales from Jabba's Palace, both very good SW "vampire" stories. The SW vampire thread has nothing to do with Buffy. Please bring it back on topic or take it to private email. Thanks. ObBUFFY: Christina mentioned something that I thought of when I first saw the pilot. I think it'd be fun to do a "flashback" episode where another slayer is featured. I wouldn't do it often, and it would have to be a pretty good script, but I still think it would be cool. You could even have the current cast play different parts. The question is, if Giles comes from a line of Watchers, did he perhaps know the previous slayer? As a young boy growing up, knowing his destiny, how much contact do you think he had with his father's line of work? Sharon - -- Sharon A. Jennifer Ottesen asked about why the other vampires would put up with the Master. It may be that the Master is, in Buffy mythology, the "father" of all other vampires. (kind of like Anne Rice's "Queen of the Damned." Even if he isn't, he is probably still a very powerful vampire. For either or both reasons, other vampires might feel drawn to him. In gaming terms, he would have a high "presence" with other vampires. (and a vicious presence attack on humans!) This made me think of Vlad the Impaler. He was by all accounts a really nasty character. Yet, he continued to rule. He must've had lackeys, retainers, and whatnot supporting him, and they put up with his sadism. I can only surmise that they felt attracted to his power and supported his claim to the throne by right of blood. And they were afraid of him, obviously. As other vampires would be of the Master. Fear, power, and claims to power would apply in both cases. - --diane ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Apr 1997 22:33:36 -0400 From: Phil Paone Subject: RE: BUFFY: Spoiler "Angel" ep - ------ =_NextPart_000_01BC4B7F.7BF47780 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit - ---------- From: Cagey[SMTP:kg244989@oak.cats.ohiou.edu] Reply To: buffy@xmission.com Sent: Wednesday, April 16, 1997 8:45 PM To: buffy@xmission.com Subject: Re: BUFFY: Spoiler "Angel" ep On Tue, 15 Apr 1997 pearss@saraleebake.com wrote: An excellent point. I can only hope that his background as a Watcher will be further explained. Unfortunately, the "let's give him some color by saying that he was destined to be a Watcher since a boy" thread has made the successful resolution of this theme difficult. If he knew he was going to be a Watcher, according to what we've seen of him he either "rebelled" against it in some way and didn't do his own duty (which could make him more sympathetic to Buffy, and explain his reactions to Owen and the Angel issue), didn't expect to be called to actual Watching and spent too much time waiting in the wings doing his own thing, or he just sucks. Obviously I'd prefer option one or two . This brings to mind a question I have about the watchers. If there is only a single slayer, then how come Giles was prepared his entire life? Donald Sutherland's character (I forgot his name) was the watcher for the only slayer. He indicated in the movie that it took him all those years to locate Buffy. So, what was Giles doing all those years? Is there a society of Watchers just waiting for the next to die?
