The first episode I watched was the one where Buffy goes on a date (sorry, I'm not very good with episode names). I think my jaw dropped down past my knees when Angel walked on screen for the first time, or at least, the first time that I saw him walk on. Then I saw the Hyena episode and was bummed out that he wasn't in it, but low and behold, they do a whole episode about him the next week. And what an episode! Talk about The Agony and the Ecstasy....I was so happy they did an Angel episode but I was so depressed afterwards. I don't know about anyone else, but I just thought it was such a sad episode. Himmanen" Subject: BUFFY: TV Guide article This bounced. --S Hey all, Just picked up my TV Guide (April 26-May 2) and there is a Buffy article. Well here's the article: Title: Buffy the Vampire Slayer By: Jeff Jarvis Publication: TV Guide Date: April 26-May 2 Article: I can't decide whether to praise "Buffy" for being different or to make fun of it for being so B-movie cheesy. I think I'll do both. "Buffy" certainly is unusual. It's not every night you see vampires lurching into prime time (unless you count the boodsuckers on certain magazine shows). And you have to give points to "Buffy"'s creators for deciding that their heroine, the vampire slayer of the title, should be a bouncy (if ever-so-slightly trashy) teenage girl, a Gidget for the '90s. She's played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, best known as Susan Lucci's daughter on "All My Children". (Isn't it embarrassing that young Sarah won a Daytime Emmy and moved on to her own show while her TV mom is still waiting for her first award?) In each generation, we're told, one girl is born to become the world's only vampire slayer, and this time it's our Buffy. She takes on the role reluctantly, of course; she'd rather lead a normal teen life of cheerleading, flirting, and modeling clothes-the life her clueless mom (is there any other kind on TV?) thinks she's leading. But the truth is that Buffy left her last school after burning down the gym (because it was filled with vampires). Now she lands in her new school in the town of Sunnydale and struggles to fit in once more. The popular girl of the moment, Cordelia (played by the wonderfully named Charisma Carpenter), checks her out and gives her a "cool" quiz. ("John Tesh?" she asks; "The devil," Buffy replies and passes.) So all is well until-wouldn't you know it?-we discovered that the town happens to be built over a gigantic vampire pit and the undead are coming up to suck Sunnydale's lifeblood. Each week, under the guidance of "watcher" (Anthony Stewart Head and eerie school librarian), Buffy does in the bad guys with the usual weapons: wooden stakes, crosses, fire, and sunlight, not to mention her Bruce Lee-like talent for kicking and her own cool wit under fire. "Well," Buffy says at the end of the premire episode, "we averted the apocalypse." All this is quite cute. So are the inside jokes. My favorite: The school library is such a dark and frightening place that no student ever ventures in there; this explains a lot about the '90s. But at the same time, even "Buffy"'s fans will have to admit this show is cheesy. Sure, some of that is a style statement: "Buffy" wants to be campy, kicky, enen joyfully tacky. But that doesn't explain the direction, which is fit for home movies. Or the acting, which sometimes doesn't reach the standard of miracle paintbrush infomercials. Or the special effects (the vampire master waves his hand and the picture turns wiggly), which look as if they could have been made on an old Macintosh. Or the vampires' makeup, which appears to be left over from an after-Halloween sale of "Star Trek" alien faces. "Buffy" is a B-movie for TV. But there's one thing you can usually say for B-movies: They're fun. Buffy has the self-confidence that Willow lacks. Willow has had to endure the likes of Cordelia for so long, she doesn't speak up for herself. This will change. She's already proven to be a sensitive and loyal friend, qualities that anyone would find attractive, and she's intelligent. While high school boys aren't necessarily interested in a woman's mind, Willow doesn't lack what they are interested in--looks. I think she's a beauty in disguise. Give her a knock-out dress, and she'll turn heads! Of course, Willow only has eyes for Xander, and her crush serves as another endearing quality. We've all been there; done that. I missed all of you. :) With all the re-subs, it's time for another posting of the list rules. Again, some of you may not have gotten these when you subbed, so please read them carefully and save for future reference. Questions, comments, etc. should be directed to Sharon and/or me offlist. *** This list is for discussion of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," both the TV series and the movie. Because we want this list to be a great place to talk about "Buffy," we are setting up a few ground rules. If you've ever been involved in a discussion list, many of these rules will look familiar. Hopefully, they'll make list life more interesting (and more fun) for everyone. 1. Keep posts on topic. Topics should be related to Buffy the series, Buffy the movie, the actors involved in either project, etc.. Discussion of vampires in other universes is fine as long as they're being discussed in relation to the Buffy universe. 2. Please be careful with the use of strong imagery or language in consideration of younger list members. Think "rated PG." 3. No advertising of non-Buffy related items or services. If you want to post information about Buffy-related merchandise, conventions, etc., clear it through one of us first. Also, no binary files of any sort (including images, wavs, MOVs, etc). 4. Please don't post fiction to this list. There will be a separate Buffy fic list set up soon. 5. If you get advance information on a new episode, or see an episode earlier than the national viewing time, and you want to post about it, please do the following: **Mark the post as a "spoiler" in the subject header. **Leave about twelve lines (blank or with non-spoiler info) at the top of the post. This ensures that anyone who doesn't like knowing about an episode ahead of time is "protected." :) The blank space is for people whose mailers automatically open up the next piece of mail, without giving them a chance to see "spoiler" in the header. Spoiler warnings are not necessary after the start of the episode's national viewing time, which is currently set at 9 p.m. Mondays, Eastern Standard Time. Spoiler warnings are not necessary for reruns. 6. Most importantly, there will be ABSOLUTELY NO FLAMING ONLIST. We have absolutely zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour. Flames can kill a list, permanently damage relationships, and make life a lot less fun for everyone. What's a flame? NOT A FLAME: "I don't think so-and-so is a very good actor." FLAME: "So-and-so is a twit who can't act and has no brain." Broadly defined, a flame is a personally derogatory, inflammatory comment about another list member, their progenitors, or about any of the actors, writers, directors, producers or crew of "Buffy." Disagreements-- even heated ones-- are expected. But the minute you start slamming someone personally, you will face the Wrath of Jill and Sharon. First offense: offender is unsubscribed for one week. Second offense: offender is unsubscribed to the Buffy list for a minimum of three months. If the offender returns and flames again, they're offlist permanently. And no, it doesn't matter that the actors, writers, etc. from "Buffy" aren't onlist; we won't put up with anyone flaming them anyway. There are slander laws against it. It's also common courtesy. Determination of what is (and what is not) a flame is made by the listowners, and their decisions are final. Determinations of any penalties associated with flames are also made by the listowners, and their decisions are final. 7. Related to #6, the listowners reserve the right to "kill" any discussion threads which either of the listowners deem offensive, or which appear to be degenerating into a flame war. If either one of us declares a topic "dead," it's dead. Anyone who continues the discussion thread, against our express wishes, will be immediately noposted for one week. 8. And last, but not least, we reserve the right to deny subscription (new, renewed, or continued) to the list for any individual(s). Again, welcome! If you have any questions about these rules, please contact either one of us offlist. If you have subscription problems or questions, the fastest way to get help is to e-mail one of us at the addresses below, at the kirby@xmission.com addy which is the "official" e-mail owner of the list. A) Extremely immature B) Both believe they are heroes. Except Joxer has Aphrodite to make him heroic while Xander only has evil hyeneas that make him evilly strong. C) Both act like they are 16 except Joxer isn't D) Both believe they are ladies men. Although Joxer scored with the fake Xena (a cook/thief) while Xander nearly scored with an insect. E) Both are third wheels but wish they were part of main team. F) Both would give up their lives for the other two, Differences A) Xander is a better dresser then Joxer except for Joxer's cool hat. B) Joxer treats X & G like his sisters while Xander just wants Buffy and mistreats Willow. Joxer really has no romantic interest in either. C) Joxer has a cute little song - "Joxer the Lion Hearted". Xander - nothing. D) Xander is also rather insensitive his treatment to Willow and the hooker comment to Cordelia. Joxer would never do such a thing even to Callisto. Overall I think Joxer is a genuinely kind person who has delusions of being heroic who cares deeply about his hero friends but they are just that hero friends. Joxer is also a bad singer, and horrible dresser and all in all immature. Xander overall a good person but has a tendency for insensitivity. He also has delusions of being heroic and is sexually attracted to one of his hero friends and treats the other one shabbily. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Apr 1997 20:55:12 -0400 (EDT) From: "David H. If you screw up unintentionally, please apologize and we'll all move on with our lives. Xinlei, it's already forgotten and forgiven.
