Plenty of people are saved through the wonders of CPR. That's what CPR is for. Since the Codex as written waaaay before the advances of modern science, perhaps its definition of death was that the person was no longer breathing. Or possibly Buffy's heart did stop, only Xander (rather clumsily, I might add) restarted it. Anyway, the Master spoke of Buffy being the Lamb. This, of course, refers to Jesus Christ being the "sacrificial Lamb." Knowing this reference, wouldn't the Master have realized that Buffy would be resurrected as Christ had been? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Jun 1997 11:06:45 -0700 From: Juliana Lee Subject: Re: BUFFY: PROPHECY GIRL remarks > >>"I >>told >>you >>to >>eat >>before >>we >>left!" > > >I mean Willow sees death on her doorstep and we only get 3 minutes of her >pain (which admittedly, she did a Wunnerful job with); Buffy DIES, and we >don't even get a Xander/Angel high-five simultaneous victory yelp, all we >get is Xander: oh yeah, Buffy died... ok... I'm ranting now... I'll stop. Yeah! And for some weird twisted reason, I wanted to see Buffy give Xander this big hug for saving her life and all while Angel stands back, watching them with jealousy. I mean, did Buffy even thank Xander for defying the prophecy for her? ------------------------------ Date: 3 Jun 1997 14:19:21 -0400 From: "Maureen Wynn" Subject: BUFFY: Prom night from Hellmouth SPOILERS B U F F Y R O C K S ! ! Well! What an episode! I'm still reeling from the implications of everything that happened. Questions galore, and not enough answers to go around... 1. How did Buffy die? Well, my feeling is that the Master bit her, and took enough blood to get the power he needed to open the Hellmouth, but not enough to drain her. He was, understandably , a little impatient to get the Hellmouth open and the show on the road, which may be why he didn't take the time to totally drain her. He did, however, take enough blood to cause her to pass out (like with Darla sucking on Buffy's mom), and that, combined with dropping her face-first into a pool of water, was enough to cause her to drown. (It is possible for a person who's unconscious to drown in as little as two or three inches of water.) 2. How did she come back to life? After Xander had enough presence of mind to realize that Buffy had _drowned_ (and not died of a vampire bite, which would be a reasonable conclusion to jump to), and realized that CPR could save her life, do we really want to quibble about how badly he actually performed the CPR? :)) And yeah, it was really dense on the part of the film-makers to have Angel audibly panting, then saying "I have no breath." Doh! The same kind of thing happened all the time on Forever Knight, and I never did learn to ignore it. Joss, et al, have shown that they can and *do* pay attention to little details - let's hope they pick up on this. As for *how* Buffy came back: I don't know if it was just another error, or if they were deliberately setting up something, but that *pow!* eyes wide open, then coughing up the water sequence was all wrong for how drowning victims come back, so far as I know. Any medical people around who can give us more information? 3. What's happened to Buffy? Danged if I know! Giles has always said that she should be able to sense vampires, and Buffy has herself referred to her "spider-sense", but for her to _know_ where the Master was (not to mention her suddenly feeling stronger after being dead and brought back to life), this is definitely something new. I don't know about her becoming a vamp, though. Her cross was still on, and not apparently causing her any discomfort, and we know she didn't suck any of the Master's blood. But with all of the supernatural manifestations on this show, there may be consequences to a vampire/demon bite that we don't even know about yet... in which case, we need to keep a close watch on Mom, too! 4. Who's going to be evil incarnate next season? I don't know about the rest of you, but I really can't buy Colin (The Anointed) as the driving force of evil for a whole season. He may be evil, yeah, but he's still only eight years old! (And, btw, I agree with the person who thought the bloody handprint on the TV was Colin's. I didn't think about it before, but it's definitely the right size. Just one more instance of Joss paying attention to the small details.) The fact that the Master didn't just totally disintigrate into dust, but still has a skeleton remaining, makes me think that there's a possibility remaining that he'll come back. Does anyone know if Marc Metcalf is signed on for the next season? It would be a killer season opener for everyone to come back after the dance at the Bronze to clean up the library, only to find the skeleton missing... 5. How did Xander know where Angel's apartment was? Well, I may be wrong, but I think Angel's place is either in, or attached to, the Bronze. It seemed to be right there in "Angel", which would explain why he seems to spend so much time hanging out there. And, for a not-so-nice explanation, maybe Xander is obsessing over Buffy and Angel so much that he's followed Angel around, just to be sure that Angel wasn't meeting up with Buffy. I said it wasn't a nice explanation! And I don't know that I want to believe it, either. Myself, I was more intrigued by the fact that Angel has a telephone. How exactly do the undead go about applying to the phone company for a phone line? Credit references? Social security card?? Employment history??? The mind boggles... There were other things I wanted to talk about, but I've already rambled on enough for one post. There was enough going on in this episode that I'm sure it'll be generating discussion for several weeks! Lots to think about, and lots of time to discuss it... When exactly is the next season starting?? I can see some serious BtVS withdrawal going on here! One got the impression that Cordelia was actually out there mourning for Kevin! It really *must* have been the end of the world, for Cordy to have such a drastic personality change. >Also, wasn't it odd that Cordelia wasn't dressed to go to the prom? This would also fit in with the idea that she was grieving for Kevin - I can't see that Cordelia would pass up the Spring Fling just 'cause her date was dead, otherwise. I mean, really, let a new dress go to waste? Now, I admit, Cordelia was pretty cool in this episode (I really loved her biting the vampire!), but how much was from Cordelia really changing, and how much was the effect of the end-of-the-world prophecies coming true? Kevin changed from "mean as a snake" to "really sweet", and Cordy changed from her usual snarkiness to thinking someone flaking on her was "cute" - what further indication of the apacalypse do you need?! >Oh, and another thing. Has anyone managed to clarify exactly _what_ was >said, and by _whom_, at the end? I'm a little confused, myself. Several people seem to be saying that it was Buffy that said, "I'm starving", but I could have sworn it was Cordelia. I do know that Giles said, "I'm not going to dance" and Ms. Calendar replied something like, "You can come with us, and we'll see about the dancing." I thought a group name for ourselves would bring a sense of unity among us. I also was curious about everyone's ideas with regard to a group name. I never intended a totalitarian regime. If you don't like "Slayerettes" that's your opinion and you have a right to it. You don't have to call yourself anything you don't want to, but saying that 16 votes is too small to decide for such a large group is being unreasonable. We had a democratic process, what else could we do? There was more than three times as many votes for Slayerettes than for the second place choice. If there were other individuals who wanted another name they didn't express themselves by voting in the selection process. You can't please everyone in a democracy, but things have to get done so you implement decisions made by the majority of the people. I'm sorry to those who aren't happy with slayerettes, and I respect your right to express your opinion, but I think we should give the majority's choice, Slayerettes a chance. First thoughts now...once I can catch up on digests, I'm sure I'll have more to say. ;-) And not to fear, I'm tracking down the music. :-) Only two songs (with lyrics that is) in this episode. Here's the info on the first; it's an easy one. I'm still hunting down info on the second song. (If any one knows it, please let me know. Thanks.) "I Fall to Pieces" by Patsy Cline available on several of her albums including the Patsy Cline Collection. For more information on Patsy Cline, try http://www.mca-nashville.com/pcbox/pcbox.htm or http://www.nola.ovik.se/pj/patsy.bigtext.html Well this was an excellent season finale. Kudos to everyone! So much angst, so many great performances... Joss really took us full circle; I love the "Welcome to Hellmouth" parallels, especially when the vampire community descended on Sunnydale High. I thought, "Duh! Angel told Buffy in the pilot to 'head east toward the school.'" And I loved the mention of Aura (poor girl, she's probably been in therapy since she found the "extreme dead guy" in her locker). I'm pleased Joss didn't go for a "traditional" cliffhanger, favoring to open up more questions while resolving some of this season's stumpers. Not to mention, he really handled the Xander, Buffy, Willow triangle well. Very honest writing. Finally, I liked the direction--favorite scenes visually are the slow-motion sequence in the tag, Buffy and her escorts approaching the school, and the really nice fades in the library after our heroes have saved the world. Explanations: (1) How did Xander know where to find Angel? In "Invisible Girl," Angel says he came upon the Slayerettes in the broiler room because he'd come up through the basement. I would venture to guess Xander thought he could retrace Angel's steps...probably back to the basement of the Bronze. Just a thought. (2) How did Buffy survive the Master's bite? Maybe he only took a little like Darla did in the "Angel" ep. I thought what really killed Buffy was the water--she drowned. (3) Why was Angel breathing if he doesn't have breath? He needs to use the air to speak for one. He may not have to breath to live, but he needs to take in air. (So does the actor. ) It makes sense that Angel would let Xander give Buffy CPR. When has he had an occasion to ever use CPR? Besides, if you don't know how to do CPR (poor Nick), you can actually hurt someone. Not to mention, you should never do CPR on a healthy person. More of my two cents... Questions for next year: Has our slayer been transformed in some way by her nasty bite from the Master? Where's the Anointed One? Was that the Anointed One's handprint on the TV at the school (very creepy)? Now that Cordelia and Ms. Calendar know Buffy's the slayer, how will their relationships change? Will Xander and Angel ever be buds? Now that the Hellmouth is closed, what will our nasty little demons do? Well, it's going to be a very long summer... We all laughed out loud when the Master turned around and said "5.1" Whenever we have an earthquake here, we always play the "magnitude guessing game." I wish that "X-Files" and "Highlander" took a few lessons from this show on how to end a season. Joss did a great job with this. If it had been the last episode of the series instead of just the season, it would have been a satisfying ending. "Highlander's" season ending either left people screaming in rage, seething in anger, feeling betrayed, or loving it. I think "Prophecy Girl" is the best episode of the season. This is gonna be hard to predict I think, cuz we don't know which direction Joss will take with this "stronger" but as to how she got it--here are my thoughts, anyone can help expand this out if they want. I have my doubts that the Master really did bite Buffy cuz he was kind of interupted and we didn't see blood plus Angel didn't either. He would have said that she had been bitten, instead he said that she wasn't breathing. Now when the Master was about to bite her, he paused and said, "the power" or something like that I can't remember if he said anything else besides the "power" in reference to the "power" (gee, was that a sentence? I'm getting as bad as Buffy ;) Anyway my 2 cents worth is that the Master was filled with the "power" and since he was holding Buffy, she got it too because of her slayer relation to vamps. So when Xander did cpr and revived her...did you see the look on Angel's face when she stood up, he was the first to let go though Xander kept holding on and said, "you're still weak" I think Angel sensed the change in Buffy, he didn't question her in any way bcuz he felt the difference in her and knew she was somehow ''linked" with the master and could find him better than he could. I can't help it but express my disappointment again about Angel not facing the Master...due to the fact that he was one of the Master's favorite and killed the Master's main favorite oh well. I hope to see more of a "stronger" Buffy even to the point where she and Angel have a kind of raport (not telepathy) but able to know when the other is in danger because of this strange "power". Of course, Angel always knows when Buffy is in "grave danger" but I'd like to see it for Buffy sensing that Angel is in danger. did anyone else noticed that a scene showed in the previews was not in this ep? it showed Angel's head in a semiconcious state with scratches on his neck...wonder where that came from if it wasn't from Prophecy Girl. FUNNY STORY: I was just having lunch at a local bar & they were playing last nights season finale ala video tape. Is Buffy mainstream yet? You tell me. I thought this episode was a great one. The hellmouth monster at the end was a little hokey for me, but it worked out OK. Some comments: Buffy says to Willow after they find the dead people "Promise me you'll stay in" Willow promises. A couple scenes later she's at the library. broken promise. Of course if she hadn't we wouldn't have seen her the rest of the ep but still... Since when does Cordelia know about Vampires and why didn't she freak out about it?!?! I like when she bit one and said "How do you like it?" And at the end when Giles asked about the vamps she said they were gone. Like it was no big deal that she had just seen these horrible creatures, wanna go to the dance? Willow in the library with X and G and Mrs C. "How come she gets to be in the club?" That was a good line. Xander's yen for Buffy. I hope it fades next season. I understand the guy is hooked and all, but I don't need to see him mope about it. Move on. I really liked the Xander/Angel scenes. X confronting A to help Buffy and be like a real person. I liked it Also, I guess now the whole do vamps breathe thing can finally end cause Angel said it himself: "I have no breath" Glad to see the return of techno-pagan. She's a good character and I hope she's back more next season. And I guess maybe they'll have to come up with a new big bad guy now that the Master is a skeleton. I think maybe they should have broken the skeleton apart or burned it or something because that way you're pretty sure he ain't coming back. And how come he didn't completely disappear like the rest of the vamps? I know he was the oldest and most powerful and all, but I would think he would go the same as the rest, just not so easily. Anyhoo, those are my thoughts. Enjoy! Several people seem to be saying that it was Buffy that said, "I'm starving", but I could have sworn it was Cordelia. I do know that Giles said, "I'm not going to dance" and Ms. Calendar replied something like, "You can come with us, and we'll see about the dancing." I think we need someone who's willing to go through their tape word by word to see who said what in that scene. >> Hi! I had the Closed Captions turned on on my tv. and it didn't write most of what they said let alone let us know who said them!! Buffy says something as she turns to walk away, but you can't tell what she said. Willow said something to Angel but you can't tell what. Then Willow says to Angel: "You can come with us though." Xander said: "So what's the story with the car?" Cordelia said: "Oh that was me." Buffy says: "I'm really really hungry." Angel said to Buffy: "Oh by the way I really like your dress."
