I think Buffy's reaction is more a feeling of frustration. She was already sacrificing so much... but not yet truly accepting her calling as a Slayer. To make the ultimate sacrifice was just too much to bear at the moment. Don't forget she just ran through a myriad of emotions. From joy at seeing Angel, to shock at finding out her destiny, to anger at having the two men she trusted lie to her by withholding information, it was just too much for anyone to handle gracefully. Let alone a 16 year old. This is my favorite scene. Sarah Michelle Gellar just nailed it. As anyone with ears can a test to, the jumbled conversation as they the leave the library is nearly inaudible. I mostly pulled just bits and pieces but I am only one man with one set of ears. Perhaps a group of attentive listeners can produce what I couldn't. As a sign of devotion to the group, here is a list of how I acquired what I did. First, I hooked up head-phones to my television and watched the last scene 23 times (As a side note, I can re-in act every line of this damn scene now). Then I copied the audio to a tape and tried cleaning it up on my stereo/sound board and listened to that 13 times. In all honesty I don't think it was meant to be heard, I think we're going to need the actual transcript here. Anyhow.......Here's what I've got: CORDELIA OPENS DOOR. ENTER BUFFY, XANDER, & ANGEL Quick fade forward, entire group surrounds masters skeleton (Off screen, left) GILES: Vampires? CORD: Gone.... ANGEL: Master? GILES: Dead. The Hell Mouth is closed. (Looks to Buffy) Buffy?.......Buffy?....... BUFFY: Oh...I'm sorry.........It's just been a really weird day. XANDER: Yeah.....Buffy died and everything. W: Wow.....Harsh. GILES: (Smiling and looking at Buffy) I should have known that wouldn't stop you. (Buffy and Giles exchange caring smiles) CAL: Well, what do we do now? GILES: I don't know about the rest of you.....but I'd like to get out of this place, I think. (The "I think" is muffled as he turns) I don't like the library much anymore. XANDER: Hey! I hear there's a dance at the Bronze..tonight. It could be fun. CORD: Yeah! W: Buffy? BUFFY: (Pausing) Sure......We saved the world. I say we party. (Pausing again and looking at her absolutely awesome dress) I mean....I got all pretty. CAL: And (Actually "N") what about him? (Gesturing towards the remains of the Master) BUFFY: He's not going anywhere.....Loser. (Victorious grin) (HERE'S WHERE IT GET'S UGLY KIDS.....BEAR WITH ME) GILES: (Starts walking out) I'm not dancing then. (Queens English) CAL: (Following Giles) We'll see. (They all start moving for the door) W: (To ANGEL) You can come with us you know....You could get something to eat....well maybe.... thing. CORD: Oh! That was me. (Skipping, I have no idea to who or what this is in reference to.) (LOTS OF MUFFLED CONVERSATION, PROBABLY IMPROV, ONLY OTHER AUDIBLE BEFORE FINAL LINES) BUFFY: I'm really REALLY hungry. (AUDIO PICKS UP TO HEAR FINAL LINES) ANGEL: By the way...I really like your dress. BUFFY: (Interrupting) Yeah. Yeah. Big hit with everyone. EXIT VICTORIOUS GROUP. CAMERA PANS BACK, THEN UP AND AWAY FROM MASTERS IMPALED SKELETON. BEGIN MELODRAMATIC MUSIC. FADE TO BLACK. There it is. That's all I could get without listening to it another 20 times, and at this point I'd rather listen to Milli Vanilli's greatest hits. I hope the collective can de-code the rest. By the way.....I'd be willing to bet what I have is correct but if it isn't.....well.....it's for the greater good. I wish you lucky listening. Copy reads as follows: When Sarah Michelle Gellar read for the role of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on the part-creepy, part-campy series of the same name, the producers asked her back twice, but not because she hadn't aced the audition. "Both times I wore this ankle-length dress with sneakers, and they were afraid i had really bad legs!" explains Gellar, 20, who nevertheless was cast as the teen-ager with extraordinary abililty to fight vampires. Turns out the Emmy-winning actress (for All My Children) isn't afraid to show a bit of skin after all. "I wear tank tops all year round --- in the winter I just add a leather jacket," she says. Needless to say, when the weather heats up, this slayer unlayers, pairing those tiny tops with summer's equally tiny shorts and wedge-heeled sandals that, like Buffy, really kick butt. just thought i'd share, B :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Jun 1997 21:34:56 -0700 From: Charles Schultz Subject: Re: BUFFY: PROPHECY GIRL: Quibbles & Nits (and Nits and > mentioning this with a big grin. It's a skill that has served her well in her role as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, for which she performs many of her own evil-snuffing stunts. But now that Gellar is spending 14-hour days on the set of her upcoming film, I Know What You Did Last Summer, she's too busy fighting exhaustion to fight off opponents in the gym. It has even been tough to work in her regular cross-training routine of alternating cardiovascular exercises with circuit training. Now, with all the >"Vampires are soooo sexual" notes we've had here lately, I'm just glad >yours actually relates to BtVS. :) In reality, the lore of vampires and their victims is a very sexual topic. I believe it was Bram Stoker's 'Count Dracula' written during the Victorian era (late 1890's) that started the whole thing. All that Victorian repression -- everything from their clothes to their manner, culture, and of course, sex -- had to find a release, and it did in stories such as 'Count Dracula'. If you've ever seen the old silent movie 'Nosferatu' it is positively chilling and very sexual, the manner in which the vampire takes his victims. In fact, they say that the old silent version is the scariest vampire depiction of all times. Nosferatu makes the Master look like Mickey Mouse. funee ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Jun 1997 22:37:27 -0700 (PDT) From: Sonja Marie Subject: BUFFY: Major Nitpick Hi all, S P O I L E R S I have a major nitpick! In the scene where Cordelia saves Willow and Ms. Calendar, she's starts talking about sitting where she and Kevin used to park, and she turns to look at Ms. Calendar in the passenger seat next to her and I noticed that though Cordelia is no longer talking you can still hear her! Prophecy is a tricky thing and it doesn't give you all the info, as the Master said. Technically, she didn't know him. He was a stranger to her. And there may be something about him that she still doesn't know, some terrible hidden aspect that will be revealed to us later. Q: Why didn't Buffy die as the Codex said she would? Apparently she did. The old Buffy is dead and a new one has been born. (not an uncommon way to evade death prophesies, again the example of B-5's Sheridan comes to mind). Strange that Master wouldn't anticipate this. Did he drop her in water to kill her? (seems haphazard and unreliable). Did he assume prophecy would fulfill itself without his help? (Note- a simpler answer to the above two questions might be that "prophecy was made to be broken", especially by tough, feisty, irreverent kids. George Lucas got a lot of mileage out of this idea. Old-timers like the Master and Principal Snyder, beware! Buffy will break all your stupid rules! Even the ones in the Codex. And she'll do it with a song in her heart! Er, back to seriousness now...) Q: Why is Buffy now stronger? Ahhh, this is good. After Xander brings her back, she says "Master...?" She doesn't say "Where is The Master?" or "And the Master?..." or even "The Master?" But just "Master...?" Like "I dream of Jeannie." It's as though she is calling out to her new Master, for a moment. As though she has gone through *part* of a vampiric conversion, missing only the other part of drinking his blood. Then she pulls herself together, aware she wasn't fully converted, and goes to kick butt. But she's stronger now and has an awareness of him from the partial communion of blood. (I wonder if Buffy's mom had an awareness of Darla?). Q: What religion is Giles? Still not sure, but he sure knew his biblical scripture cold! Q: Wasn't it cute that Buffy's Mom asked jokingly if it was written somewhere that Buffy couldn't go to the dance when, in fact, it kinda was? Yeah, you mean like in the *Codex*! I don't know what it is but a lot of these guys are really obsessed with the show. Although I'd imagine their discussions gear more toward Buffy's legs than our usuall plot analysis on the mailing list. Here is a list of Buffy signs they came up with to take to WWF matches: "Sarah Gellar is the REAL I.C.O.N!!" "Forget Buff Bagwell, 'Buffy' rules!" (submitted by Osmarus) "NBO: New Buffy Order" "'Nitro' parties suck!" "Watch 'Buffy' on the W f'n B!!" "New Buffy Foundation" "Mondays! 9:00! The WB! Be there!!" "NOB: Nation of Buffy!" "www.buffyslayer.com!!!!" (That's the show's official site) "Gellar's a babe, Kimberly's (or any other lady from WWF or WCW) not!" "Marry me, Sarah!!!" "Buffy is War!!!!!" "Vampires Rule!!" "Buffy 4-Life!!!" "Killing Vampires is Too Sweeeeeeeeeeet!" "Buffy Rules!" "Sarah Michelle Gellar is God!!!" "Buffy 3:16!" "Buffy For President!!!" "Raw isn't War, Buffy is!" "The NWO Fears the WB!" "Gellar Forever!!!" "Syxx/Pillman Fears Angel!" "Buffy Parties are better than Lee Marshall's!" "Sarah Gellar Kicks Monday Night Ass!!!" "Forget Buff Bagwell, BUFFY Rules!" I imagine a lot of these are wrestling-oriented so they may be a little confusing. ------------------------------ End of buffy Digest V1 #117 *************************** To subscribe to buffy Digest, send the command: subscribe buffy-digest in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com".
