But it would have been *nice* to cover this little base with a single line in passing in this or a previous ep. Many of us noticed it *immediately* and did a "what the ...!" Normally Joss wraps these ends up better, but he tried to pack *so* much content into one hour. There were far more unexplained things. I really enjoyed the content, but probably would have enjoyed it even more as two or three eps. Again, think of all the relationships that were explored in this ep: Xander/Buffy, Willow/Xander, Buffy/Giles, Angel/Xander, Buffy/Master, Buffy/Mom, Cordy/Willow, Giles/Calender, Buffy/Slaying, Cordy/ Kevin, Everyone/Ugly multi-headed thing and Zombie Vamps. Gonna disagree with that. That's the perfect line: "I'm sixteen years old. I don't wanna die." Buffy's in the library with Angel and Giles, who have both accepted their roles over time. In spite of what they may have preferred (like becoming a fighter pilot), they forsaked perhaps happier lives to fulfill their roles. With just this one line, Joss made us all remember what separates Buffy from everyone else in the room. At her age, she still hasn't fully accepted that she can't escape being the slayer, regardless of whether she wants it or not. Being the slayer wasn't so tough when she kicked butt on any vamp she found. When she has to face the slayer's notoriously high mortality rate, it's a different story. So this line was also perfect for the viewers to understand her internal struggle to do the right thing throughout the next act. Without this reminder of her mindset, her struggle in the next act just wouldn't have had the same "bite." It's not a very pleasant subject but here's a brief and as un-descriptive run down...of what I know. Sacrifices were done for countless reasons, mostly having to do with the Gods. I say "THE GODS" in the general term because this act was widely practiced around the world in regards to some DIVINE power. Some early evil Witches/Satanist's (Yes I know there are good Witches, some of my best friends are Witches! And YES, I do know Evil ones too!) believed that a virgin was pure and unsoiled and so by sacrificing her they were giving the gift of said purity to whatever deity the prayed to, therefore giving them power. Some cultures sacrificed their young virgins in hopes of avoiding great disasters or as a payment for what they perceived as good fortune or as retribution for bad. And though there were some groups who sacrificed willingly, others thought it to be a necessary evil. They created lotteries, if you were the virgin called, you were sacrificed. And though, by today's standards, sacrificing seems disgusting and archaic, there was a time when this was an acceptable form of prayer. As the term implies, you "SACRIFICE" something, or more aptly someone, to show your faith. The indigenous people of my islands used to throw virgins into the volcanoes every season to assure good hunting and fishing, fruitful harvests, and the survival of the villages. Ways they were killed varied depending on the terrain and religion (I.E. Volcanoes) but the most widely accepted method was stabbing. No details here just trust that it was unpleasant. Other ways: Eaten alive by wild dogs, Disembowelment, Beheading, Jumping in wells or other deep dark places, or even just being cast into a cave which was thought to be the dwelling of the God (Or Beast) to eventually die of starvation or some other natural cause. Even today there are some cultures and fanatical groups who still perform the act of sacrifice. Most use animals (Which is an entirely different story) but human sacrifice, though rare, is still performed. Where? Everywhere - modern and ancient. Russia, Scotland, Ireland, Rome, Spain, Greece, every chain of islands in the world, Africa, even here in the States. You want cases, look them up, you'll find them. The eastern philosophy of "Self-Sacrifice", better known as suicide (Seppeku or Hari Kari), is different. It still has it's religious overtones but it had more to do with Honoring ones family, ones lord, and ones country. Both virginal females and males were sacrificed, though in everything I've read young girls were favored. The white dress is a symbol of purity. The tradition of Brides wearing a white dress goes back to the time when women never had sex until they were married, the dress was a kind of "Uniform of Chastity." By wearing one you assured your soon to be husband of your devotion, that you waited for him. (Yes the world used to be MORE sexist than it is now). By no means did all sacrificial individuals wear white. That was more prominent in rituals of "defilement" of purity. As for why virgins? As I said above, it was a symbol of purity and innocence. Both of which are powerful icons in every religion (The Virgin Mary, pure and untouched, became the mother of Jesus Christ). That's why so many different religions practiced the sacrificing of virgins; some wanted to corrupt & destroy, others were showing what they were willing to "sacrifice" in the face of their God. As for Buffy looking like a Sacrificial Virgin. Well, even with the leather jacket....she did. Didn't they refer to her at some point as the "Sacrificial Lamb." A term describing the sending of someone of to their imminent doom for the good of the people. I thought it was a very powerful image in the episode. She knew she was going to die and yet at the chance of taking the Master with her, she would have and did, sacrifice herself for the world. (Again) Well there's a short description of the whole "Sacrificing Virgins" thing. I hope you find it more educational than you do Bull-Pucky ..... but I tried. Some of it may have seemed vague but if you want to know more there has to be a sight somewhere on this internet, I've just written what I can recollect. Again if this offended anyone, that was NOT my intention. Someone asked. I wrote. If you do have a problem contact me personally, there's no need for this to go further. As it is I think this is off topic, but I did mention Buffy at the end and it was referring to a B.T.V.S. episode related question. One was when Xander knocked on Angel's door, he said, "Mind if I come in?" and barges in without waiting for a reply--Angel's reaction to that was priceless it showed in the way he shut his door. Sorry, I'm an Angel fanatic so sorry if I go off the main subject a little . Xander definitely came prepared yet his darker side showed when he "attacked" Angel with the cross (I loved Angel's involuntary reaction--shows his true nature that he tries to keep hidden). Xander on a mission is a very different guy than the usual high school persona so maybe there really wasn't a hyena taint but a "being around Buffy the vampire slayer fighting forces of evil" taint. First off, thanks for taking the time out of your life to attempt to do this, it was a nice gesture, and well appreciated, at least by me. Perhaps though, it could've been a bit more organized. You simply came on, said hey lets vote, here's the list, I'll post decisions in like 2 days... I think if we're going to have some democratic thing here, the list moderators should give it their stamp of approval first, by (for example) appointing someone (you perhaps) to oversee the vote. Nominations should be called for, and a deadline set for nominations, say at least a week. The organizer should post a *short* reminder note about the vote every day, so people who've been away will know about it. After the Nomination deadline, the list should be compiled, duplicate nominations removed, and posted to the list. Also, as someone else mentioned, we're not the only Buffy fans out there, so perhaps concurrent postings to other active Buffy lists and the Posting board would be appropriate. Once the official names list goes out, a vote deadline should be set, at least a week, and adhered to. As with the Nominations, short daily reminders should be sent to the list(s), along with perhaps secondary and tertiary mailings of the Nominated Names list in the middle of the week and the day before the voting deadline. After the first vote, the nomination list should be cut down to just the top 3-5 names, reposted, new vote deadline set, and etc. as for the above vote. Also, it should be explicitly stated that all Nominations and votes should be privately e-mailed to the "annointed one" (pardon, couldn't resist). Copies of all Nominations and Votes should be kept, in case anyone decides not to trust the compiler. Please don't take any of this for other than the constructive criticism it was intended to be, as I said above, I appreciate your doing this thing in the first place, it was a noble gesture. Thanks for your time, M@ P.S. List owners, if your listening, please consider this your jurisdiction, and do with it what you will. - -- Matthew M.
