The novel turned these > stories into a romantic Myth to satisfy all those repressed Victorians. > I don't think Vampires are a part of ancient demon mythology. Vlad Tepes is a very real - and interesting, and controversial - historical figure about whom much reputable research has been done. The impaling bit is well-documented: it was not an uncommon practice for Vlad's time and place. Vlad was a hard prince, living in hard times, who managed to keep Transylvania in the middle of very vicious wars between the Austrians and/or Hungarians and the Ottoman Empire. The blood-drinking is understood to be propaganda. For a real chill, look up a biography of Elizabeth Barthory, a Hungarian countess of the 17th (I think) century. A Vlad Tepes story: a traveller passing through Transylvania was set upon and robbed. He made his way to Vlad's court and appealed for justice. Vlad housed and fed the man, and a week later summoned him to the hall. "The bandits are caught, and their heads are now on spikes above my castle wall. Here is your purse - please check and make sure all has been restored." The traveller thanked Prince Dracul, and counted the coins. "Er, Your Grace, there seems to be some error. As I told you, I lost 40 ducats ... but this purse has 41." "And so it should, for I put the extra ducat there myself. Be thankful you are an honest man, or your head would join those of the other thieves." There are stories in Jewish legend of wonder-working rabbis (usually Kabbalistic scholars) driving away dybbuks (demons). I'm fairly sure that Buddhism and Hinduism have exorcism rituals. Further suggestions would be great, In no particular order: Episode 1 Goblin Market (poem by Rossetti) Xander eats enchanted food left by "goblins" and begins to starve to death, craving the delicacies. Willow/and or Buffy track down the goblins, resist them, and break the spell. Episode 2: Cristabel (by Coleridege) Willow invites young runaway home, who turns out to be a vampire. She realizes she is a ghost, and Buffy and club must figure out how to release her from her eternal search for home. Episode 3: La Dame Sans Merci--poem by Keats Giles (or Xander) falls in love with fairy queen/succubus. Buffy and Club must figure out how to break spell. Episode 5: Nightmare Number 3:--poem by Stephen Vincent Benet Machines begin to revolt against human beings. Episode 6: Somewhere in Time (movie) Xander or Giles falls in love with portrait of woman long ago, and is sucked in to solve mystery. Must chose between staying in this time, or going back to stay. Episode 7: Time loop (see Groundhog Day movie, several Star Trek episodes, Terminators 1 and 2, novels Replay, Restaurant at the End of the Universe, etc. Sunnydale keeps repeating day that ends in its destruction. Buffy and Club must figure out what event to change to get out of loop, and save Sunnydale. Episode 8: Freaky Friday (movie and book) One of the other characters change bodies with Buffy. Many possibilities. In the original movie, it's the mother and daughter who switch. Episode 9: Canterbury Ghost--Oscar Wilde Old ghost of noblemen begins to haunt Sunnydale High, irritating students and faculty alike. Willow or Buffy takes pity, and helps him find eternal rest. Episode 10: Buffy is laid up with an illness or injury, or is out of town. The rest must hold off the undead until she is back in action. Episode 11: Lost Boys (movie) Mom begins dating one of the undead, and thinks that Buffy just does not want her to go out with anyone but her dad. Episode 12: Cat People (movie, two versions) One of Sunnydale's oldest families is afflicted with curse that changes its members into panthers when emotionally charged or upset. Can Buffy and others get this cursed highschooler into therapy before he or she eats someone? Episode 13: "Maltese Falcon," Hope Diamond (folk legends) Cursed object gets passed around Sunnydale, bringing doom to all who hold or crave it. Episode 14: Monkey's Paw Someone at Sunnydale gets monkey's paw that grants wishes--with horrifying results. Episode 15: High Noon (movie): The undead will arrive at Sunnydale at certain time and place. Most townsfolk flee or hide; few stand with Buffy against the horror. Wow! Stealing plots is harder than I thought! Hats off to the creative team of Buffy. Any other ideas out there? This folk legend has been huge in Chicago for years and it'd be a nice change from monsters and gore, not to mention a good way to explore the idea of "going home." >Episode 3: La Dame Sans Merci--poem by Keats >Giles (or Xander) falls in love with fairy queen/succubus. Many possibilities. >In the original movie, it's the mother and daughter who switch. This is always a fun thing to do. Put Giles into Buffy's body and let him get a glimpse of what she goes through. Of course, there's lots of other switches that could happen (and Buffy switching with her mom might actually be a really revealing plot line). Of course they experimented with this a bit in "Witches," but that didn't involve any of the main characters. >Episode 10: >Buffy is laid up with an illness or injury, or is out of town. Especially since the supporting cast in this show is so strong, this could really work. >Episode 11: Lost Boys (movie) >Mom begins dating one of the undead, and thinks that Buffy just does not >want her to go out with anyone but her dad. I'm a big fan of Buffy's mom, so this would be great to see. Unfortunately, if she dated a vamp, Buffy could just stake him, and then Mom's new beau would disappear. Perahps if the new guy was some other form of weird? Werewolf, ghost, whatever. There's always the alternate universe idea (a la "Yesterday's Enterprise") where somehow Buffy comes into a world that is in another timeline, and perhaps doesn't have any slayers or even just where she wasn't born, and sees what a difference she's made ("What a Wonderful Life"). [I >do recall that one can become a werewolf either through a family >curse, or by being bitten by a werewolf.] Ah! Finally a Lycanthrope question. I have the feeling Joss was trying to spread out the conventional "Monsters" and that's why we never saw any Garou. Besides, it is called Buffy the VAMPIRE Slayer. Lycanthropy can be inherited (Family curse or bloodline), Spread via infectious bite, or conjured ala' magic. For the most part only Garou which are naturally born can control their transformations. Those who become Garou due to a bite or spell are usually at the whim of their hunger, the phases of the moon, and some to those who made them. As far as being cured, some say you must kill the original Werewolf (No small feat) others say a simple exorcism. If we are to see Garou enter the Buffyverse I hope that it's due to a bite. Not some mysterious kid who all of a sudden starts acting funny. (It's like calling Yeoman Johnson to the transporter room.) Whether or not it was Cordelia or any other member of the group I don't think really matters. Although Xander joined the "Pack" & Willow fell in love with a Demon Robot, so they're covered. I think I'd like to see Gile's as the Werewolf. It'd be interesting to see how the young group deals with a monster whom First: Is their friend and Second: Is their usual researcher. They would have to find a cure themselves. Possibly more Ms. Calendar. Maybe even a scuffle between Angel and the mystery shape-shifter? (He'd probably rip another shirt ladies...) Regardless of who it is, remember one of the oldest curses of the Werewolf......."You always kill the ones you love!" Pretty scary eh' kids? One more thing Joss, No silver bullet and wolfsbane crap. Werewolves are strong with incredible healing capabilities. One bullet in the chest isn't gonna kill a Garou.......7-8-9 , now that's another matter. Please, god, no time travel! An episode telling the story of an earlier slayer would be awesome, but let's leave buffy and crew in the right time stream for now. Time travel does nothing but introduce irreconciliable continuity issues that are beyond the scope of BtVS; at least in scifi they tried to rationalize time travel with pseudophysical explanations, mystical time travel never makes any sense. "Gee, if the master could time travel why wouldn't he go into the past and kill buffy's parents before she was born? Or go into the future and warn himself about making sure buffy's dead before he leaves his lair? Hi, The book the Necronomican does not exist. The american writer HP Lovecraft introduced this book with his short stories, These stories allege that a mad arab wrote a book called the Necronomican. Lovecraft used to even cite passages from this book. What Lovecraft started was a search for this book. The problem is Lovecraft never said "oh by the way i made it up". Many antique book stores have been pillaged and so on. You also have people producing books claiming its the necronomican and even web pages citing passages. Therefore if you see a book called the Necronomican make sure the book is 1100 years old at least. So if you see Giles with the Necronomican you will know that it is a homage to Lovecraft. For more information on Lovecraft a writer called Don Burleson wrote the definitive Lovecraft study back in the 1980s. He is a college professor at Rivier College he also taught a course on writing horror fiction. I took the course he also taught math and well I got a math degree because of him.
