I don't think he disappeared of his own free will. He might have been threatened by someone (very probably a vamp) and decided it would be safe for him to disappear. Or he was killed by a vampire. The only reason I see for a vampire not being able to use a computer would be that they live underground (as stated by Darla in "Angel.") That would be difficult. Other than that, there's no reason for them *not* being able to use a computer IMHO, just like there's no reason for them not being able to read, again IMHO. But then again, he could just be a well known vamp opposer and have been killed or threatened for some other reason. Someone said that all the vampires were heading towards the Hellmouth, but I disagree with that. I don't think that *all* the vamps in the world could get to Sunnydale. I mean, there are vamps all over the world, right? This monk could be living in some obscure place where there's not much contact with the outside world (except by computers). Hmm, once again I'm not expressing a definates opinion. It seems to be a chronic problem with me. I have to disagree. There are an awful lot of Rice clones out there these days, but what Joss has done is very rare: successfully put the *very* old version of vampire folklore--the original sense of the word actually referring to the demonic spirit that *inhabits* the corpse of the victim--into a contemporary setting. I was wondering how they were going to reconcile Angel into this if my initial instinct that he was a vampire was correct (and I really should have gotten serious on that bet with a friend of mine while I had the chance), and I thought the solution was *brilliant*. It makes Angel *completely* unique in that universe. Yes, the all-vamps-are-demonic framework would lack some complexity if the vampires were at the center of the story, as they are in the Chronicles and quite a lot of other recent vamp fiction & media. But BtVS centers on Buffy and her friends, who deal with a lot of things other than vampires. And I think Buffy has more than enough on her plate for a 16-year-old girl without having to be judge, jury and executioner for vampires who are morally ambiguous rather than demonic. (Besides, there's a little leeway for arguing that our definition of "evil" here is only evil for humans; the demons *were* here first, remember? "And the race of man covered the earth like a plague of boils...") That's just not a place *I* want to go, at least not any further than the exception of Angel. I'm a fan of a very wide gamut of vampire stuff, and in many ways Buffy fills a niche that has *nothing* else in it. The Rice realm is well-covered (even before people started copying her); Buffy is new ground. More power to them! Valerie WiliQueen@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 1997 08:57:44 -0400 (EDT) From: WiliQueen@aol.com Subject: BUFFY: Angel's reflection I can shed a little light on the reflection thing, especially since BtVS goes back to much earlier folklore for most things than the average contemporary vamp universe. Folklore held two reasons for vampires casting no reflection: 1. At the time, people believed reflections actually showed the soul; vampires (and any other supernatural creatures, up to and including Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid) have none. Now, this seems not to be the case for BtVS, unless one chooses *not* to believe that Angel's soul was actually restored by the Romany curse. Which leads us to... 2. Most mirrors used to be back with silver, the "purest" metal in alchemical reckoning. The "purity" of the silver repelled the vampire's image, making his/her reflection invisible. (A variation of this is also behind the garlic business, as garlic was believed to purge/purify the system of evil influences.) But again, it's Angel who nixes this one, since the reflection we didn't see was in a glass bookcase in the library, not an actual mirror. *Sigh*. So, with a little creative thinking from my fiance to add to the basic folklore we arrive at: 3. #2 applies, and the bookcase thing happened because Giles has some sort of sacred/mystical/whatever tomes in there that also repel the icky vampire reflection. Of course, exactly how icky Angel's should be again comes into question; but I guess it's one of those nasty little reminders to him that he may not be like the others, but he *is* still a vampire. Am I pushing it? Maybe. Am I thinking *much* too hard about this? Probably. But hey, it's fun. :-) Later! Part of it I think is the "pilot" effect of TV, which occurs when you've got a bunch of nervous actors demonstrating their "craft" by being kind of stagey in their acting with incomplete characterizations (remember the ST:TNG premiere? How different were the characterizations by the end of that series, I ask you?) I must say that this effect was quite accelerated in BtVS, part of which was character growth in the scripts and part of which was the actors making firmer decisions about the characters, feeling more comfortable in the show, etc. This isn't to say that the actors are bad, just that series tv has its own acting challenges. For example, there was definitely a frat-boy smarminess to Angel in the premiere, which was replaced by something sullen and terse and Rebel-without-a-cause by the Mantis girl ep, imo. In the mausoleum scene, did anyone else think that he looked really PO'ed when Buffy was challenging him on the whole friend issue? IMHO, the velvet jacket had that Ricean old effete vampire feel to it, more ostentatious than cool (no offense to whomever keeps it, it's still beautiful and it's been on his bod). But the leather jacket definitely introduced (as you suggest), the James Dean thing, the troubled, misunderstood young rebel, a modern American sexual archetype (I say appreciatively). Scott The WB Television Network Hmm...Scott brings up a good question. If, when you stake a vampire and the entire physical being disintegrates, then why did the Master leave behind a skeleton? Does this mean that the Master was simply sent back to Demon hell and can rise again in his skeleton? And, does Colin have anything to do with why the Master's skeleton stayed behind? Maybe Colin will be integral in bringing the Master's Demon back so that they can once again try to rule the world. OR, Will a new demon arise to inhabit the Master's place (aided by Colin, of course)? I have absolutely no doubt that Colin is evil, but I'm not sure what his role is or was and how he connects to the Master. In the Anita Blake books, when you stake the Vampire, his human servant also dies because they are tied. Now, I'm not saying the Colin is human. But maybe there is a connection between him and the Master that will result in a "re-birth". Or, maybe Colin died too when Buffy slayed the Master, if the Master is really dead... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 1997 14:52:02 -0400 From: Cassandra_Caswell@condenast.com Subject: BUFFY: Angel as the Master On Monday, Jun 16, Jodie wrote: I notice in "The Harvest" that the master says to Luke, "My soul is your soul." Maybe this confirms the possibility that the Master didn't die. Maybe he was sucked up by the remaining vampires, kind of like The Blob. Therefore, the Master could then reinvent himself as another vampire, especially if all of his power and worldly experience goes to one person. But who? Colin? If Angel receives the brunt of the Master's demon soul, wouldn't that then make him the Master? AND, wouldn't the Master's demon then be stronger and be able to control Angel's "human" soul? This might contribute to ARCHANGEL's hypothetical about Angel being the next Master. Or, I could just be reading too much into the line. (Obsessed with semantics? Who, me? I mean WHO could he really talk to about his situation? Buffy seems to show some understanding and sympathy in the look she gives him and IMHO, that is when Angel starts to see her in a different light. The way he whispers "good luck" after she is gone seems to indicate that his opinion *has* changed but he's not ready to give in to this, probably strange new feeling, that he is starting to experience. The "looks" that are exchanged on this show are very expressive Jodie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 1997 15:03:57 +0100 From: Rich & Terry Pfeifer Subject: Re: BUFFY: Surprise? I'll be damned." It was a sad ironic statement considering that as a vampire, he may well be damned (hellwise), in a Christian belief system at least. Who knows if his current soul would be held accountable for his body's past crimes? I think in most Christian religions, you can be saved if you are sorry for (atone, confess, repent, etc.) your sins, and try not to sin again. In the RC religion you can be pretty much saved at the last minute through "the last rites". I don't really know how other religions view or deal with vampires. I would guess that Angel is no longer "dammed" even if he was pretty evil before. After all, it was the demon (which only got his body) that did the killing, not the person who *was* Angel before he was bitten, and that's the person whose soul would be saved. I'm not too sure how those gypsies got his soul back, from wherever, but I'm sure glad they did. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 1997 15:45:06 -0400 (EDT) From: DaisyFoo14@aol.com Subject: Re: BUFFY: How old is Alyson In a message dated 97-06-17 09:32:33 EDT, nola@worldaxes.com (Fran Baugher) writes: << How old is Alyson anyway?? Humble Salutations my little Slayerettes!!! It's been awhile so forgive me while I get back into the swing of things. Being and Old Ansomniac, I've had the privilege of viewing some of late nights finest works....including some older and less reputable Vampire films. In one particular film, I believe it was called "Vampire Circus", an unsuspecting patron pulled the stake from the chest of a "so-called" vampire skeleton. After he left, the skeleton slowly started to regenerate into its originally ominous form..... POOF!!! A Vampire reborn. I certainly hope Joss isn't also a night owl as it were, but I thought it worth mentioning because....as painful as it was to watch....I've seen it before. In a more creative "rebirth" theory: An old "Tales from the Darkside", I believe it was that, had a charming story about an author who wrote the tales of an ancient Vampire. The author, believing he had enough material to write many books, promptly disposed of his undead partner by preventing him from returning to his coffin and exposing him to the sun...end product Vampire Dust. (Granted, Coffins are not Buffyverse but bear with me.) The author collected the ashes and temporarily desposed of them in the Vampires said coffin. Whew, Still with me? Next, a friend of the author visits and stumbles across the hidden coffin and ashes and clumsily pricks her finger. (She pricks it on a rose, but it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme) The blood drops and mixes with the ashes, she leaves, smoke rises from the coffin and.......POOF!! Another Vampire reborn. Yes, Yes, Yes, These examples seem a bit trite but it shows the liberties writers take with whole the Vampire Mythos. If Joss wants to bring back the Master.....He's gonna bring back the Master!!!! Done! FINI! Personally, as much as I enjoyed the Master, I hope he's gone for good. I hope to see the masters skull propped in some precarious spot in the library. I really hope Buffy makes earrings out of his finger bones........well maybe not that. I think the issue of "rebirth" is rather moot, I vote for some new blood (Ugh...Sorry), a new even more deadly Master. Colin? I sure as hell hope not. I'll have a lot of trouble believing a small boy is the "Seed of all evil on this planet". Besides, we don't want the kid to become twisted in real life. Look at the kid in "Pet Cemetery"!!!! That was messed up!!! A cute kid like that running around filleting his family and friends. Yeah!!! Tell me he's normal today!!! Sure...... Here's two theories hot from the "Hypothetical Express", All a board!!! Some power hungry, but previously unknown Vampire, steals back the Masters bones, pounds them into a paste, and consumes them therefore getting the Master's powers. TA DA!!!! Or howza'bout this one....... (Vampire paste optional) The other Vampires, O.K. Colin too, decide they need a new leader and being that Angel is the Notorious B.I.G. of Vampire-dom, they capture him and force him to ingest:1. A whole lot of blood (Vampire or Human) that changes him OR 2. The Masters ashes with blood (It's a great chaser!!) changing him again. Either way we get a new Master, the old Master plays a part, and everybodies HAPPY!!! YIPPEE!!! What Nurse??? Medication Now??? Well, If I have to...........
