I was under the impression that Owen's thirst for excitement came from the fact that he's a 16 or 17 year old guy, not his choice of poet. I kinda felt that he got the same adreneline rush from the fracas that a person normally gets from a good roller coaster or something like that...He never clued into the fact that his life was in some serious danger, so he didn't take the situation seriously enough. That's the problem Buffy was having, I believe. If he had rolled up his sleeves and said, "Ok, you get in some nasty fights sometimes, but I'm willing to help you because it's the right thing to do and I like you.", then the situation would have been very different; he would have been joining the ranks of Xander and Willow in that case. However, he just said, "Whee, that was fun, let's do it again." Buffy couldn't let him get hurt, but he didn't know enough to hide at the appropriate moments, so she would have had to babysit him most of the time. Maybe I'm not giving the proper amount of credit to the tye of poetry he reads, but that's just the way I see it. I'm thinking that Owen was very sheltered and became fascinated with death on an intellectual level (the same as in Dickinson, hence the whole morbidly depressing ennui/stasis stuff that you mentioned and with which I agree). So suddenly, here's the kids doing this typical rebellious lost-youth thing (breaking into a funeral home, hanging out in the cemetery, etc.) that plays into what Owen *thinks* is the most important thing to him (in high school, didn't we all have something that we all just fervently believed or loved despite the fact that we had no knowledge of its reality? For me, it was the idea of living in Paris, even though I knew nothing about paying rent, being on my own, or the French). This is why I think the whole Pork 'n Beans rising scene is very important to this character, because it represents the first time he encounters the reality of death, or the possibility of death. In fact, I think we're seeing this character transform *from* an Emily Dickinson type into a more reckless Byron or Shelley type in this episode >P.S. Nice title for this thread. Yes, perhaps this is a rite of passage point for him, a transformation moment, as when the boys find the dead body in "Stand by Me." Ironically, it precipitates Buffy's dumping of him too. His restrained Dickinsonian morbidity may have complemented Buffy's frenetic, violent lifestyle better than his new action-hero status would. And she knows it. She wants calm in a boyfriend, not chaos. She gets enough of the latter in her "work." >>P.S. Nice title for this thread. Was that your doing, Jesse? >Thank you, thank you! It's a gift; I don't own it. ;-) Sorry I couldn't resist my perverse urge to change it. I liked how Owen's innocence and naivete did give him a certain "lightness" and dovetailed well with the story of "The Unbearable Lightness of Being"." But his morbidity was just begging for the "darkness" tag. >guy behavior exploding through a sensitive guy veneer of poetry-reading >sophistication, like an Alien through John Hurt? Agggghhhh! Thanks for that image, Jesse! John Hurt is one of my most favorite actors ever, quite underused in 'Alien.' If you haven't seen Stephen Frear's 'The Hit' (starring John) yet, drop everything and go rent it now! '1984' is a winner too. I would still be interested in Buffy having an ongoing relationship with a sensitive poetry reading guy. The potential for humorous conflict there would be a limitless motherlode. Actually, Angel has some of this potential, he has that dark brooding nature, plus all the books on his shelves. To discriminate more closely among the romantic poets, Angel is more akin to the darker, more intense Byron (capable of action, thus not completely Dickinsonian), and the "new" Owen is more akin to Shelley, slightly more idealistic and frivolous, and more likely to get hurt (John Hurt?) when his passions carry him into danger. The more sagacious Angel/Byron would pick his fights more carefully than Owen/Shelley. Thus Angel's caution in descending into the Master's lair... (remember the story of "The Lady with a Fan"?...) Lisa Buffy: Can a vampire ever be a good person? Couldn't it happen? Giles: A vampire isn't a person at all. It may have the movements, the memories, even the personality of the person it took over. But it's still a demon at the core. There's no half way. The pool table part did seem rather Woo-esque. Here's a child, born to darkness, the living heir to the Master's plans for world domination. And this kid is still running around as of the end of "Prophecy Girl". Any bets that "a child shall lead them" is about to get a whole new meaning in the Buffyverse? 2) Buffy's ultimate fear: Giles and her mother dating. :) No, really. I could see Giles becoming attracted to Mrs. Summers. She's about his age, obviously appreciates art and literature, and already consider him a Nice Guy for his dedication to Buffy's welfare. It had witches, werewolves, ghosts and a vampire named Barnabas Collins.
