Alyson never used the term, and Lawless just arbitrarily chose a strange name to make a point. It has been very obvious that the three big names bandied about are Slayeryte, Slayerette, and Buffamaniacs (the over 30 crowd for the most part seems to like Buffiatrics, so that's included too). I also realize that several of you just don't care what we call ourselves, and most likely won't use whatever name ultimately receives the most votes. Fine, no biggie. I totally agree. Giles keeps telling her that the role of the Slayer is not conducive to a social life, and my guess is that any relationships she has will be majorly unrequited or unfulfilled in one way or another. Like the best heros, her most important relationship is with the evil she has been appointed to defeat. What I love about the show is how Buffy always brings it all down to earth. Because we all have to deal with evil every day, and Buffy's showing us how to do it without losing our sense of humor, and without forgetting to attend to the important little things that make life nice. For her, that seems to have a lot to do with itsy bitsy skirts. Anyway, the whole point of being a Slayer is that it's a special role, and it's covert. The Buffy Web site Mythology section describes an earlier slayer who had a job (a blacksmith!), so there's hope that Buffy will have a day job. It'll have to be something like commercial real-estate sales, don't you think? So she can poke around all the deserted lots and buildings where ghoulies and ghosties are known to lurk. So she's a little like Superman, and a little like Xena. She's a little bit more like Superman in needing a cover identity, yet yearning for the picket fence. And a little like Xena in having a need for friends who can go with her to the brink of hell, while she goes in and does the real dirty work. I love this mailing list. Although the series about fourth-century Irish heroes vs. Roman invaders should benefit from the popularity of TV's "Hercules" and "Xena," the show looks more like a cross between an Irish "Braveheart" and "Star Wars." Where the syndicated "Hercules" and "Xena" are lighthearted romps, tongue-in-cheek to the edge of campiness, "Roar" has an earnest spirit at its heart. The hour-long "Roar," rated TV-PG, debuts Monday at 9 p.m. EDT, which pits it against the popular "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" on many competing WB stations. Both shows are aimed at similar audiences. About 3;1 compression. However, But how do we know it was September their time? I didn't pay real close attention to this episode in regards to her starting school so maybe I missed something but it appeared as though she started school late in the year since their was so much attention to her being a new student. I thought that she started school in early spring, her time, given the weather in the episodes and the fact that we didn't see any football games, etc. I don't think they stated exactly when she started school (again, I could be wrong) so hypothetically (very hypothetically), the events over the first season could have taken place over a week's time. - -Lawless ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jul 1997 10:12:21 -0500 (CDT) From: Tina Subject: Re: BUFFY: buffy doesn't want to endanger anyone On Sat, 12 Jul 1997, Wien Huang wrote: buffy said she can't tell anyone she's the slayer cuz it may endanger them. couldn't some vamps go and take her mom hostage. wouldn't she have to have an alterego? and just not associate with anyone. like runaway from home, have a new identity or something? i'm confused. Well, she could run away from home, but that would mean her picture would be on milk cartons everywhere and people would be looking for her. How's she going to slay vampires when people are going, "Look! That's the missing teenager!" Also, where's she going to live? If that's the Hellmouth (Sunnydale, that is), and it's a small town, then where is she going to stay? How will she eat? How's she going to bathe? Those are all difficult things to do without a stable home, especially as she has no job (since she's only 16). Not only that, but Buffy counts on the emotional support of her mother. She's still struggling with adolescence, and she needs some stability in her life (being randomly attacked by vampires is just not something that really leads to a normal existience, after all). As to her mom knowing being more protection, I don't agree with that. If Ms. Summers knew the kind of danger her daughter was going into, do you think she'd stay home? I, at least, think she'd follow Buffy on an expedition to try to keep her out of trouble. Not only that, but she might try to keep Buffy home and away from Willow and Xander (and especially Giles). Those three are her major sources of emotional support outside of her mother. I don't think I want to see how scary Buffy'd be (as in having psychological problems) if she were removed from her support systems, and having her relationship with her mother so drastically altered suddenly. I don't think psychological problems would necessarily be the result, nor would they happen immediately. What I mean by that really is the radical shift in how she would deal with all the important people in her life. That could beget some major changes in how Buffy deals with the rest of the world, and not positive changes either. I know Ms. Summers would be doing this with the sole intention of protecting her daughter, but it might just do more harm than good. Might. It's all just speculation, though. Cordy tried to ridicule him and he just said "shut up," like some motorcycle boy, and they danced and she seemed to enjoy it for awhile. That was interesting to me. But when the vamps attacked, and Jesse grabbed Cordy, and she was screaming and clearly no longer wanted to be with him, but he nonetheless held her by force (even without all the vampire stuff), then that quickly became disturbing to me (taking on an overtone of sexual assault). >Who knows? but (drum roll please) >Possession is nine-tenths of the law. Aggghhh!!! That's textual assault! Yes, and someone on this list (Ruth, I think?) wrote to say that Pork'n Beans was not a Christian idea of a Christian, in a similar way as Catherine was not a Wiccan idea of a Witch. Both characters would likely have been disowned by their respective religious communities. I don't recall seeing any authorities of any kind on the show except for school authorities, with the possible exception of the MiB's. Despite all these murders and disappearances, there have been no police or detectives crawling around that I can recall. Has anyone ever seen a cop on the show? Is this just Joss's strange sense of surrealism again, or is it to emphasize how insular high school can be, a self-contained world with its own rules and law? I don't know if he'll be doing any more of them or not though I would doubt it now that he has a major role in a series. Under "Prophecy Girl," this is my fav. episode. I just realized how great Giles is to Buffy in this episode. I just loved it when he carried her out of Amy's house like a little girl! Just too cute :) And it is always fun watching Buffy act so drunk during the first stage of the spell! Anyway, I saw a new WB commerical that was shown right before tonite's epi and it had the cutest scene with Buffy hugging Willow! :) The rest of it is a little of a blur....I'm sure they'll show it again next week. That was the first episode I saw this spring, and it was the one that hooked me. Seeing it again, I'm not surprised. It's beautiful the way it gives you the "real-life" mother-daughter relationship, (between Buffy and her mom) which has its problems, along side of the supernatural mother/daughter pair, Amy and her mom. Amy's mom being a witch throws in the Grandmother or Old Crone theme, and that's reinforced by the fact that, because she's so stuck on the past, Amy's mom's life, practically speaking, is over. So Amy's mom represents both the mother who steals from her daughter or tries to live through her daughter, as well as the old woman at the end of her life trying to rob from the young girl who's just coming into her own. I think it's so cool the way they take something that we've all seen, a mother trying to live through her daughter, and make it literal and show how awful it really is. Meanwhile, poor Buffy is over at her house feeling like wallpaper. I have to say, I think the show succeeds in large part because SMG plays these scenes so well. There's just so much love in the writing and staging and acting of the scenes with her mom. The point is, Buffy really sees herself in Amy, which means that in some way, she must think her own mother is a suffocating witch. And she's 16, so she's rational enough to know that her mom's not evil, and yet she still is disappointed and longs for her mom's attention. I was so touched by the way Buffy brings up the fact that Amy's mom "practices cheerleading with her for 3 hours twice a day," and then at the end of the show she asks her mom if she ever wanted to be 16 again. And that's natural, anyone who saw a friend's parent go over the edge -- whichever edge that might be ;-) -- would want reassurance about their own parents. Anyway, I just wish I had taped it because there were other cool things I saw in there that I can't put my finger on right now. Way to go Joss, SMG, Alyson, Anthony, Nicholas, et al.!
