First, I don't think that Xander dresses like a nerd. He's offbeat. Personally, I don't think that Willow dresses like a nerd, either. She's just a little bit more conservative in her Mary Janes than Buffy is in her boots. Second, being a nerd myself and shuddering as I remember my awkward high school experience, I can assure you that "dressing like a nerd" was NOT an intentional thing. I didn't do it to actively defy societal constraints. I would have given a million dollars to look like Molly White, but you know, I just didn't really know how. Yet in Willow's case, she pretty much has to prefer the style. Unless her mother is a clothing tyrant, all she has to do is ask Buffy for sone tips. I think what I dislike about Willow's style is not the concept - I've seen others do it quite effectively - but the execution. The choice in textures, colors, and patterns is just, well, wretched. Another difference between Willow and Buffy is summed up in a friend of mine's saying: "Attitude - the perfect accessory for every outfit." See, here is where personal preference comes into play. I *personally* prefer Willow's style, and sometimes I think Buffy's style is a little too far over the edge for me. However, this comes about because I'm thinking, "Oh, I could never wear that outfit." Yes, it works on Buffy, but you could throw that girl into a burlap sack, and it would come out looking good. Willow's style matches my style much closer. Throw on a shirt that's comfortable, pants that are comfortable, step in front of the mirror, and if it doesn't crack, I'm good to go! I like the way she mixes textures, btw. I think texture is as important as color, in many cases. Like I said, it's the execution, not the theory. It's like she's going for the lowest common denominator. Have you seen the pictures of Alyson Hannigan when she's not Willow? All five (Buffy, Giles, Willow, Xander, and Angel) are like spies, or soldiers. They're essentially on-call all the time, can find themselves in a fight with no notice (even Buffy gets tired and careless), and if they lose they're dead ... or worse. But - unlike soldiers and spies - there's no organization behind them to provide logistical and most importantly psychological support. Not only can they not tell the people who otherwise matter most (i.e. Buffy's parents) but they don't even have the consolation of knowing _if_ their families knew what they were doing they would approve, or at least accept. Have you seen "Men in Black"? If so, do you remember the bit at the end where K. tells J. what he's _really_ been training him for ... and J. realizes the implications? I write networks and stations occasionally and rarely hear back or else get an obvious form letter, as I'm sure is the case typically. But this time was a bit different. Here's what I got in the mail yesterday in response to my letter in support of Buffy from Denver's KWGN Channel 2: Dear Ms. Neilan, Thank you for your letter. It is so nice to hear that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" has so many fans! You will be pleased to know that "Buffy" will return in our Fall lineup. It has done very well and is liked by many. Also - - starting this Sunday, 7/13 through Sunday, 8/3 at 7pm, "Buffy" will run for a second time in addition to its regular Monday night time slot. Once again thank you for your letter and support for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." In Prophecy Girl, when Buffy overhears Giles and Angel discussing her impending doom (Miriam, you and I spoke of this scene earlier today via AOL IM) she tells Giles: "I remember the drill. One Slayer dies, the next one's chosen." In the introduction of each ep, the line is: "In every generation there is a chosen one........." This thread was dicussed some time ago, and I used to think that if Buffy died, her replacement would have to be someone very young. Someone from the next generation. I'm rethinking that now. I suppose the line could be interpreted to mean only one chosen Slayer AT A TIME in every generation. Both scenarios seem to fit and make sense, and we can probably debate the merits of each well into next season. Forgive me, for I digress. Miriam's original thought was about whether or not Angel has assisted other Slayers in the past. It is possible that in the decades since regaining his soul he could have come across another Slayer and offered his assistance. I think Joss mentioned somewhere that this never happened though. Regardless, for the sake of romance at least, I'd prefer to think that he finds something very special in Buffy (well duh!) and feels compelled to act as her guardian. That's the way I envision it anyway, and that's the way (uh-huh, uh-huh) I like it. (Couldn't resist that one!) Generally we talk about how hot Angel is :), but mostly we like to talk about what the actors are doing, or usually, we watch episodes and pick out the smallest details or disrepancies and poke, prod, and analyze them until they're laying on the ground, dead and lifeless. Then a month later, they'll kick and come back to life so we have to beat them back down again until they stay dead for awhile. So for the most part, we've exhasuted every topic imaginable from the first season, but feel free to bring something up again if you have any questions or comments on it :) - -Lawless ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 22:42:01 -0700 From: Matthew Hammond Subject: Re: BUFFY: Does anyone know Mike0705@aol.com wrote: > > Does anyone know what Sarah Michelle Gellar adress is. Sarah Michelle Gellar C/O Buffy the Vampire Slayer C/O The Warner Brothers Television Network 4000 Warner Blvd Burbank, CA 91522 But Don't expect a reply. I'm a Autograph hound and I know most STARS read mail but don't have time to respond. Some Stars hire someone to reply to the fans but seeing as BTVS is a fairly new show I don't think Sarah will be this far along in the fan mail game. As for the post of people wanting to know where she lives. As a Autograph hound I know the #1 rule is NEVER GO TO THERE HOUSE! If you want to meat her convetions and show promotions are the best place. The Star will be much more comfterbull in a safe place such as a con' or a promo. If you happen to be in a Stars home town You maybe able to snag a autograph outside a store, the mall, or even at the movies. But remember don't run up hollering there name they will more often than not run off. If you walk up calmly and say hi I'm so and so and I'm a big fan of your show and I loved you in the movie such and such ... they will more often than not stand and talk to you and you might even get an autograph if your nice and don't bug the Star for one too much. All this I say out of experiance. So remember be nice calm and don't be pushy and you may just have a nice time. "Pushieness and histarics can lead to nasty runins with the locale police *GRIN*!"
