I mean, it is the connections and excellent interactions of each and everyone of the characters (espeically the MAIN ones) that make the scripts work--and very well, I might add. But also adding TOO many characters can ruin the show. Too many characters can ruin the special relationship the main characters share if not handled properly. Well, here's my take on Principal Snyder, you're free to take it or leave it. Put yourself in his shoes: you've accepted a job at a school where your predecessor was murdered (literally eaten alive), and both you and your immediate superiors are pretty certain it was the work of the students. His tyrantish behavior toward the students is possibly more survival- or fear-related (not that he would admit it to himself, of course) than a simple dislike of children / teens. (Which brings up the question: if he doesn't like kids, why did he accept the job of principal? I'm assuming here that he was serious when he said "Kids, just don't like 'em" instead of subconsciously attempting to belittle them in his mind to control his own fear.) In his mind, it might very literally boil down to "if they don't respect me, I could wind up dead." I agree with what Tina said about assigning kids to the talent show; under normal circumstances he probably wouldn't have gotten away with that. But, put yourselves in the position of the school board: you already have one principal killed; if you start reprimanding the next onein line, there is the danger that the students will lose respect for both the office of principal and the person holding it. That, of course, would lead to even more chaos, which they probably hired Snyder to try to control. So, my explanation is that the school board was willing to grant Snyder a little bit of leeway so he could get the school under control. [An alternate explanation would be that the school board never found out; Buffy and company don't exactly seem the type to be very close to Snyder's supervisors. :-) ] I think that's enough psychobabble for tonight (ugh, must have sleep!), so I'll sign off now. Have a good one, everybody. However, he may have a superior record as an administrator (perhaps someone who has "revived" other troubled schools?), or be owed a big favor by the school board. As far as I know, principals are mostly administrators and the immediate font of discipline - they don't actually teach classes. Which is not to say the principal's attitude doesn't filter down to the teachers and students - of course it does. But the principal can be rather far on the cynical side and - as long as they mostly stay out of the teacher's way - not have that much of a negative impact. Hello - I was watching one of my Buffy tapes and realised that quite a few things were confusing me about "Teacher's Pet". Maybe someone could shed some light on these questions... 1) In the scene where Buffy, Willow and Xander are in the first science class taught by Miss French, Buffy asks her after she introduces herself if she knows when Dr. Gregory will be back. "No, I don't, um...(pause as Miss French looks down at a piece of paper in her hand)...Buffy." The problem is that said piece of paper doesn't look anything like a seating chart. There barely seems to be any writing on it at all - it has a column down the middle and what looks like a FEW (not nearly enough to be the whole class) names written near the top. How did Miss French know Buffy's name - supernatural abilities, or was it a small error in detail? 2) Why would any doctor place the very slim Cordelia on a diet meant to promote weight loss? Even though she later dismisses him as a "quack" while talking to the grief counsellor, the very idea of Cordy trying to shed pounds makes very little sense. Was it meant to be a reflection of her desire, and what she sees as her obligation, to remain "perfect" in the eyes of her friends and the rest of the school? (More references were apparently made about Cordy's insecurities concerning her image during "Invisible Girl", although I missed that episode.) 3) Cordelia tells the grief counsellor that she believes she lost about 7 1/2 ounces. Could she really own a scale that tells its owner their weight in such detailled measurements? I have never seen a digital or old-fashioned scale that reports ounces as well as pounds or kilograms. Does such a thing exist, or does Cordy just, after zealous sessions of weighing-in, know how to read the fine lines of a scale? Those are the main questions, these are just a couple of observations - 1) When Xander is at the Bronze at the episode's beginning before his "babes", as he calls them, show up, check out the disgusted, cooler-than-thou look the lead singer of the band gives him when he wanders up to the stage and makes eye contact. It struck me as a really funny comment about Xander's unfair status as a "social leper" in some crowds (though not to the people he cares about), and also to the show's good-natured jab at the self-absorbed state of mind of some artists. (Please don't think I'm insulting artists or musicians of any kind - I'm a frustrated actress/writer myself. I just don't like snobs or people who think they're too cool to walk the earth with the common "peasants" (read - people like me), and that guy was obviously one.) 2) Also observe the little smile, bordering on a smirk, that Angel gives Buffy as she crosses the Bronze's floor to meet him before he warns her about Fork Guy. Was David B. thinking of something funny and allowed the emotion to show on his face, or was Angel just happy to see Buffy? Maybe both? What are your thoughts? 3) That night at the Bronze, when Willow showed up with her hair loose and flowing around her perfectly made-up face and wearing a sparkly, V - necked top and patterned skirt (couldn't tell if it was flowers or not), she looked prettier than I'd ever seen her. 4) Xander must, despite his insecurities, be confident in his own masculinity - in the course of less than thirty seconds, he readily volunteered his impressions to Willow that Angel was both "buff" and "a very attractive man - how come that never came up?" That part always makes me smile. I'll stop rambling - enjoy the show tomorrow night. Please respond with any questions/ramblings of your own! So now there's a possibility that Buffy doesn't have to like a "corpse" :) What do you guys think? thanx for reading, Kat ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Jul 1997 14:47:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Sonja Marie Subject: BUFFY: Any New Web Sites? Does this > mean that it was her mom at the tryouts? If so, why was she screwing up? I think you're right, and it was her mom at tryouts. As to why she was screwing up, I just figured it was because it had been such a long time since she'd done any of this stuff, and was out of practice. Perhaps another reason the mom messed up at tryouts is because she wasn't used to the body yet. All files marked 'new' are still available (all 9 of them) as they're on my own local space. Nothing new there for a while, though...I've pretty well covered all the episodes so I'm taking a break until the new season starts. - --Flagg http://shoga.wwa.com/~flagg ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Jul 1997 20:25:51 -0400 (EDT) From: Xainith@aol.com Subject: Re: BUFFY: Cordy's kicking butt (was re. meaning of names) What was her boyfriends name? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Jul 1997 17:32:38 -0700 From: the_hundred_acre_woods@juno.com (Carla M King) Subject: Re: BUFFY: Vamp Healing >I think Giles must have money, perhaps from the Watchers' >organization. The ancient books of lore and magic that he's been >collecting cannot be cheap. I think you are right. In the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice there is a society of watchers that originate in England. They know and watch all the mystic happenings. If you want to read about it try the second book through the fourth book (i'm not exactly sure where it starts talking about the watchers. If anyone knows where I can get a copy of that vampire book from the first episode please let me know. There are a couple of girls that remind me of Cordelia at my school. They are so into thinking that they are giant blimps that they don't see how their figures are small and trim and practically perfect(since nothing is truly perfect). This is a disorder of the mind when people think that they are fat when they are thin. It falls in the catergory of Anorexia and Belemia. I think Cordelia having this problem makes the show fit a little more into real life for those who compare their life to tv people. As humanity's appointed defender against all things supernatural, Sarah Michelle Gellar routinely squares off against the undead and other assorted evils, so why should she fear her "fans" in cyberspace? She shrugs off zealous admirers who distribute fake Gellar nudes on the Internet: "I know it upsets some people, but what can you do?" she says. "I just hope they're giving me a good body." I'm sorry, but I've been on-line a looonnng time, and while I know that some people are way too bored and have way too much time on their hands, I think creating false nudes has got to be the most disgusting, lowlife, about two drops short of bone dry on the moral dipstick activity a so called 'fan' can indulge in. How *delightful* of Tv Guide to choose that as their lead in, as if we don't have trouble enough being taken seriously. I've never seen nor heard of such photos, before this Tv Guide blurp, which is probably what makes more more upset than I would usually be.
