There is a novelization of the pilot coming out, and then Pocketbooks is going to be doing some original Buffy stories, which I will not have seen. Which should be interesting. They will be putting them out every few months, I think. Audience: Where are the rest of the cast members? Why aren't they here? Alyson: Probably sleeping. Joss: Sarah had a photo shoot Nicholas: David had a prior engagement. Joss: These guys work all the time, on the weekends and everything. We did this very early on, so we got to be here, but most of the time, they can't come to these things at all. Nicholas: Tony's just British, so you can't interrupt his tea-time. I'm not talking golf. Audience: I was wondering if you would do anything to change your characters. Nicholas: I'd be Angel. I can do it too, man! Alyson: I love Willow. Nicholas: I love Xander, too. Xander's tough. Nice shot. Nicholas: I don't want to sound like Pretentious Guy right now, I have an eye infection, that's why I'm wearing glasses. Audience: Yeah, right! Nicholas: And your glasses, are there real lenses in there? Audience: About Darla, any chance of pulling something out of your hat to make her come back? Joss: Darla's a popular girl! Again, nothing in the works just yet, but time won't let go of old Darla, she stays with you. But we got some new people coming in, that should be of interest to you all, so maybe it'll make it helpful for you guys to forget her. Audience: (Inaudible) Announcer: The question was how much of themselves do they put in their characters. Joss: I think the closest is Nick! Heh heh. No, he's had a woman. You know, I took a bunch of pieces of medium, and put them on the page, and when these guys came in, they not only got them exactly, but since we've been doing the show together, shaped them, so right now they're a real hybrid of everybody, as bringing something their character that wasn't there before. The least, I would say is Charisma, because she's very nice, and Cordelia basically isn't, and Tony is not stuffy at all. But the characters started off with me, and now I can't distinguish them. I mean, I just write to these guys. They speak to me while I'm writing. I love them. Nicholas: Yeah! Alyson: Um, hm? Audience: Is there a lot of improv in the dialog? Joss: There isn't much improv, but these guys now and then give stuff out, bring stuff to it, make jokes that end up on the show. Nicholas: I wanted the show to come right after 7th Heaven. Audience: What can you tell us about next season. Joss: I can't tell you much. We are bringing in some interesting new villains that sort of stay in a bunch of episodes. Spike & Priscilla are coming on, we refer to them as the Sid & Nancy of the vampire set. They're gonna make things fun for you. Lot of love is in the air, it's gonna go pretty badly for just about everybody. Nicholas: But don't feel bad, because he hasn't let us know, either. Joss: They don't even know they're gonna die. Let me tackle a few. If you ever catch the novelization of Joss's original BtVS script (thanks Gail for sending me one), it answers a lot of this. Of course, that does not make it "Canon" for the tv show. :) Mike wrote: >I think Willow has the potential to be an excellent Watcher one day. I >don't know if she might not be too involved with Buffy already though. >Maybe the knowledge and experience she has gained thus far would be a >benefit, but then again she is currently in more of a subordinate role Well, we all grow up. :) Could Willow be a good Watcher not now, but in 40 years? I think eventually she could make a great Watcher. A related point, has Giles ever met a previous Slayer? I think he hasn't. I'll bet a lot of Watchers train but never do end up actually mentoring a Slayer. But knowing a previous Slayer might help a Watcher remember how serious the job is. >he's phoned his old friend (looney and incarcerated) in England, leading >me to think he hasn't been on this side of the pond for all that long, and >his father and grandmother were Watchers. Wouldn't this indicate that >previous heavy Vampire activity took place in England? I don't think it means there was special vampire activity in England. The Watchers are probably all like Giles: they travel to wherever prophecy sends them. >Also (insert monkey wrench here), in WTTH, wasn't there mention of Buffy's >old Watcher in LA? At the very least we know she was a Slayer in LA, so >she must have had a Watcher there. I know she did in the movie, but was he mentioned in the show? (mind racing frantically here) Yes and no. Merrick was never mentioned by name in the series, but WttHM had some references to her previous dealings with another Watcher. I'd be curious to find out what mechanism the Watchers use to tell a Watcher it's time to go. How did Giles know it was time to move to Sunnydale? Why hadn't he moved there 20 years ago and waited for her? I can see it now: Mr. Giles gets a package. He opens it and listens to the tape inside. It says "Your mission, should you chose to accept, is to move to Sunnydale, but never notice the scantily clad young females all around you. This tape will self-destruct in 5 seconds." I'd like to think the Watchers have a better method than that. :) >Regardless, this would mean that there is more than one Watcher at any >given time, especially since Giles was told of his destiny at the age of >ten. Might there be Watchers at several locations, awaiting the arrival >of the one chosen Slayer when and if Vampire activity heightens? Bingo. That's how the novel handles it. The way the novel handles this is that there are several watchers and several _potential_ slayers. Which one is actually chosen depends on who's closest to the next ground swell of vampire activity. BTW, how many people reading this were here in April? The list had a thread then with really in depth discussion of of how the novelization explains this. :) Joseph http://pages.prodigy.com/slayer/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 1997 08:33:35 -0400 (EDT) From: Robert Huff Subject: Re: BUFFY: tv guide > With his present mean streak and position as principal, he > could make life difficult for Buffy. True, they are a young adult publisher, but don't let that fool you. These are _not_ like Goosebumps. The books are written in the style of the show: snappy dialogue, cool phrases, and much slaying. This is not the "Buffy Bedtime Storybook" or anything remotely resembling that. The first book, THE HARVEST, is a novelization of the pilot episode by Richie Tankersley Cusick (a well known horror writer) and should be in stores in the next two weeks. I won't bore you with a book report, but I do want to mention that there's a cool cast pic on the cover. The first original novel, HALLOWEEN RAIN, was written by Christopher Golden and Nancy Holder and comes out in mid-October. Here's the sitch: Around Sunnydale, they say a scarecrow saturated with Halloween rain will come alive and slaughter anyone in sight. (Lovely place, Sunnydale.) Buffy's best friends, Xander and Willow, used to think the tale was nonsense--but after a few adventures with Buffy, they're not so sure. Even without a maniacal scarecrow, a Sunnydale Halloween is truly a horrific happening. There are enough zombies and vampires about, ready to party hearty and eat some brains, to keep the Slayer and her friends up all night. And then the rain starts to fall.... The third book is COYOTE MOON, by John Vornholt, coming in mid-December. A carnival comes to town, and Buffy thinks it's connected to the corpses turning up around Sunnydale. But Willow and Xander aren't biting because they've gone crazy for two of the carnival workers. Can Buffy find out what's going on in time to save them? Or has the Slayer become the prey? That's the info--enjoy! :)liz ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 1997 11:52:05 -0400 (EDT) From: Letondu@aol.com Subject: Re: BUFFY: Buffy Books: the real story In a message dated 97-07-31 11:45:19 EDT, you write: > Archway paperbacks is publishing Buffy books. As for this last one, I'm not sure that more money always makes for a better show. Some of the best shows around are made on the smallest budgets, BtVS for example. Terminator-1 was one of my favorite SF films ever, because of its subtle dark humor and clever foreshadowing (same as in BtVS). Because of this, I didn't mind its relatively low budget FX (same as in BtVS). But by T2, much of the subtle humor was replaced by a frenetic, FX driven script because they now had the budget for it. Cameron handled the new action emphasis well because he's brilliant at it, but it didn't give me much to think about, or chuckle about, afterwards. I'll take a T1, Red Dwarf, or Dark Star any day over a T2, Predator, or ID4. JMHO. Though it may sound controversial, I've always suspected that low budgets force creators to think and work harder at dialogue, character, and plotting, while large budgets can tempt them to become more complacent and fall back on FX. JMHO. ObBuffy: I just found out that the husband of one of my dearest LA friends is a grip on the set of BtVS. And their daughter is a frequent extra on the show. Small world! They didn't know what a fan I was so they never mentioned it before. I want the show to be popular enough so that he will keep his job! (and maybe even tell me production stories?) Yes Lisa, Glad to see that I am not alone in my fears that Buffy will become TOO big and kill itself. The stars might even go "Hollywood" on us and become wierd. The only upside would be mega amounts of merchandise. Oh, does anybody know if Sarah's new look (hairstyle and makeup) is going to be carried into the show? I personally hope not I like the "old" Buffy look. Being principle is definitely a day job, and involves a lot more than wandering *inside* the building. (Like rounding up the kids lounging in the quad who just ate your mascot, for example.) So if Snyder became a vampire, he'd be very unlikely to continue as principle, don'tcha think? Mind, I haven't met Snyder yet (hint, hint to my friend who's copying the second half of the season for me ) but that doesn't really make a difference in this case. The "Bay Area Buffy Society" (BABS) is now seeking new members from the San Francisco Bay Area (preferably mid to lower peninsula, San Mateo to San Jose, as we are "headquartered" in Palo Alto). We are two members strong and growing! Planned activities include getting together for: 1. Marathon all-day Buffy watching sessions with lots of snack foods onhand (in honor of Xander). 2. Sharing and trading of memorabilia, merchandise, and anecdotes. 3. Field trips to local funeral homes and zoos We're not in a *big* rush on #3, but it could happen. If you are interested and local (or interested and willing to drive long distances), please contact me offlist at: rosita@igc.apc.org Thanks, and may Buffy be with you! Well, today it was the reverse. WB _lost_ 3 stations to UPN. I can hear Buffy say "Bite me." I wonder if any of these are big Buffy the Vampire Slayer markets. Scott, will this hurt Buffy's ratings? - ----------------------------------------------------------- HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- NBC said Thursday it has reached an agreement to acquire its Hartford affiliate from the Paramount Stations Group in exchange for three stations. Paramount is acquiring WWHO-TV in Chillicothe, Ohio, WLWC-TV in New Bedford, Mass., and KPWB-TV in Sacramento, Calif., in the swap. The three stations are affiliates of the Warner Bros. network; they are to become UPN affiliates. NBC currently runs them under local management agreements. The deal, which is subject to approval from the Federal Communications Commission, is expected to be completed by year's end, the companies said. I think the best thing us Canucks could do is write to TV Guide and ASK them to do an article and cover on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. A large enough demand will get their attention! Thing is, be nice when you ask! You'll get more flies with honey than vinegar! Cheers!
