Debating the facts aren't going to do anything. I seem to recall Joss saying that although he wrote the movie, it wasn't done the way he wanted it to be done. So the series is his way of getting it done his way. Also, as for differences, someone, (sorry, I can't remember who) said that maybe we should just take the movie as Hollywood going berserk. Say some girl gets in trouble in L.A., lots of dead bodies involved, major damage to the school, etc., all of that would be majorly exaggerated in a movie, so let's maybe pretend that the movie was about our Buffy, but Hollywood got carried away and took a little too much creative/artistic license on it. The basics are there, but dramatized. And the reason Buffy is younger is that when the movie was made, there was no plans for a series, but when they decided to do the series, it would be kind of weird to have Buffy be a Senior, transfer to a new school, make all kinds of buddies, and then go away to college, it was done to make the series last longer. No big mystery there. Okay, I'm done now. I am going to climb down off my soapbox and take a nap, I'm exhausted. Vampyrslay@aol.com "I think I speak for the rest of us when I say, 'Huh?' I was discussing this with some non-netted friends, and we came up with a list of the odds of the likelihood of death for all of the continuing characters. (The folks on the GASP list have already seen this, so if you're finding this familiar, that's why). This does NOT contain spoilers - the speculation is based only the 12 episodes of season one. This also does NOT mean that we want the characters with lower odds to die - frankly, I think Ms. Calendar is a great character, and I'm going to be tremendously disappointed if Joss really does kill her off. So, for your reading pleasure, the Buffy Deathwatch Betting Report follows. After the list of odds is our reasons for the odds. Please DON'T respond to this with spoiler info from Season 2 (unless you put in BIG warnings) - this is only supposed to be based on what we know from obsessive watching of the season 1 episodes and general knowledge of How Television Shows Usually Work. The Anointed One - even odds Ms. Calendar - 3-2 Principal Snyder - 5-1 Cordelia - 10-1 Angel - 10-1 Joyce Summers 20-1 Xander Harris 40-1 Willow Rosenberg - 100-1 Rupert Giles - 100-1 Buffy Summers - 1000-1 As the Master is currently dead, he has not been included. Explanation of Odds: The Anointed One: Hey, he's a bad guy. Bad guys do have a tendency to die when they go up against Buffy. The only reason that betting is being accepted at all is because he _is_ a child, and there might be some qualms about having Buffy off a kid. On the other hand, someone *else* could always be the one to do the killing.... Ms. Calendar: She's likely to become the girlfriend of a regular. The death knell has already begun to sound. Principal Snyder: He's got a full time job on another series. All it'll take is a couple of schedule conflicts, and Snyder will be permanently beamed back to Deep Space Nine. Cordelia: The last two episodes of season one actually presented Cordelia in a fairly sympathetic light. Remember what happened to Principal Flutie when _he_ started showing a human side? Angel: He's turned into a major heartthrob, and strong demographics on the female viewer side got him a full-time contract. But the series is beginning to get a top-heavy with regulars, and Xander is already in place as a the show's Young Male Hunk. Plus, the Buffy Angst Factor would incredible if it turned out that she was the one who had to kill him. David B. had better watch his back. Joyce Summers: Oooo, killing Buffy's Mommy! What a shocker! What angst for our heroine! And she isn't on often enough to have developed a real fan following. But how would Buffy avoid being shipped away from Sunnydale to her father in L.A.? That, and that alone, is keeping her odds fairly high. Xander Harris: Not Xander! He's soooo cute! And Willow would be devastated! But it certainly would be a *wicked* thing for Joss to do, and Angel could move into place as the sole Official Young Hunk, and it would have a high Angst Factor for both Buffy AND Willow.... Willow Rosenberg: Now, this one WOULD be shocking. Not only couldn't we come up with a good reason to kill off Willow (there is no one in place to take over the position of "Buffy's best friend and confidant"), but it seems highly unlikely that Joss (who apparently gets along quite well with Ms. Hannigan) would remove her from the series. Rupert Giles: We really couldn't come up with any good reasons why he'd be killed off, either. There's currently no one in the wings who could take over his role, he's the one character designed to add some adult appeal to BtVS, and neither ASH nor Joss has given any indication that Giles has a gloomy destiny. Buffy Summers: Well, the series is named after her, but there IS always the faint possibility that SMG could become infected with Denise Crosby Disease*, and ask to be released from her contract. Yeah, sure she could, and I've got a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell you. Now if we can only find a bookie somewhere to hold our bets... - ------ *Denise Crosby left "Star Trek: The Next Generation" after its first season because her part wasn't big enough, she didn't think the show would go anywhere, and she was going to be a Big Movie Star. Her decision to leave is generally ranked among the top ten all-time stupid career moves, right up there with McLean Stevenson leaving "MASH". - ------ Amy Sheldon Member GASP - Giles Appreciation Society Panters Keeper of The Accent Amy.Sheldon@sff.net ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Aug 1997 12:35:30 -0400 From: Metkulu Subject: BUFFY: Giles I just saw a repeat episode of Highlander and Giles was a guest. I remember seeing a quote from Joss to this effect also. He wasn't able to do the story his way at the time the movie was made, and the series gave him the chance to do it right. As for debating the facts, this is absolutely right, IMO. Just because they refer to events from Buffy's past, such as burning down the gym, it doesn't mean they're referring to the movie. Even if there had never been a movie, Buffy Summers would still have a past, and it's normal to refer to things out of your past. I mean, she's 16 years old, she didn't just appear in Sunnydale one day out of the clear blue. One thing has been bugging me since this thread started, however, and maybe someone on the list can clear it up. It's been a while since I saw the movie version and I don't have the video, but I don't remember her burning down the gym in the movie. Right/wrong? I'd also like to see an episode where the "monster" turns out to be a fake, or a prank. Right/wrong? > No, she did not burn down the gym in the movie, it was merely left in shambles due to all the chaos. I concur with others that this discussion is getting way out of hand. It is visibly apparent that Joss included, if not distinct connections, at least allusion to certain elements of the movie when creating the series. Considering that the movie and the tv series are comprised of two alternate continuities and settings, I believe Joss meant for it to be open-ended. *Somehow* Buffy has prior knowledge of vampires and the skill to fight them, and *somehow* she knows a little of the lore involving her role as a Slayer. The gym may have burned down, and it may not have, but these are not the important things. It's left up to the individual viewer to draw his/her own conclusions, and not to debate about whether or not this happened, or this didn't, because we'll never know, and we're not supposed to. As far as I'm concerned, I *like* to think that there was a previous Watcher who trained Buffy and that Pike *did* exist, but that's merely my opinion, and I don't support it as gospel truth. The only thing I can say in support of this debate is that it's been an interesting discussion, and has helped make the day less dull. *g* }:)> Chris 2 **Keeper of Xander's Cool** ========================================================================= "No, no, listen, don't listen to me, listen. ObBuffy: I just got loads of behind the scenes buffy info from Margy Rochlin who wrote the TV Guide article. I can't say anything yet (I know, I'm evil) until she checks her contract but she's sending me the full version of the TV Guide SMG article (it was edited for size) and I'll post it as soon as I get the legalities out of the way. Hey all you - I've finally gotten around to starting on the BTVS xmission shirts. I will repost this order form at *least* once a week until the deadline. Below is a order form and description of the shirts. I've tried to keep them as simple as possible to keep the cost down (the price of shirts has gone up lately). Also, I have a tendency to round numbers up and make things a touch too expensive - this is because in the past I've had surprise costs and had to use my own money to pay for shirts. In this case, any funds left over will go towards the sending the cast shirts (see below). Also, in the "options" section below, the top-ten list requires a separate screen. If I do not get enough orders to pay for this option, I will contact you to find out if you'd like personalization done or have a refund of $2.50. However, I don't anticipate this being a problem. The deadline for receiving orders is going to be *******Saturday, Sept. 6, 1997******* so that I can place the order on Monday. If, for any reason, you can't have your order to me by then, email me and I'll see if we can't work something out. Also, I would like to send shirts to as many people on the Buffy production staff that I'm able to (I'll start with Joss, then go to SMG, etc, etc). If you would like to include an extra dollar or so to help, that would be appreciated. If at all possible, please print out this order form and use it (makes record-keeping easier), but if you can't, please make sure to write down all necessary information (on a sheet of notebook paper, if possible). Thanks. It says that the She-Mantis only preys on virgin males, does that mean Dr. Gregory was a virgin? Kind of hard to believe, considering he looked like he was in his forties. Also, when they pull up Natalie French's records, it says she was born in 1907. When they go to the real Mrs. French's house, she definitely does not look like she's 90 years old.
