It was Faraday who died because his bladder exploded. I guess that's what happens if you get into a stupid bar bet. Ick, I can't imagine even being physically able to do that! Tycho Brahe hung around bars at night too, being an astronomer and all. He got into a bar fight and got his nose sliced off, so he replaced it with a silver one. Creepy, huh? Here's the rest of the story that would make Buffy proud. About 20 years after he died, some graverobbers dug him up and ran off screaming because his face was blue. Turns out the silver oxidized in a funny way and colored his face! One more thing. A couple days ago, Jesse Jou made the point that the kid in Nightmares couldn't have repressed his memories of abuse because Freud didn't think it was possible. Forgive me if I am misquoting you or taking this the wrong way. As a survivor of abuse, I was really upset. A lot of people believe in "false memories" or that kids make it up, and it's really really rare that actually happens. I repressed memories for my whole life because I just couldn't handle it, and it's very painful. Nobody wants to be a survivor, trust me. In fact, after seeing that episode, I wished someone like Buffy had kicked some serious perpetrator a** when I was in high school. Sorry for the downer and all the off-topic stuff. I have been enjoying all the talk about Darla wearing a plaid jumper! When I saw her wearing that in "Angel" I thought it was a nice touch. I love how she tries to get to him about Buffy. Having lived through 13 years of Catholic all-girls school, plaid and all, I like the irony! I knew some girls who were pretty wicked too, maybe it's like Joss says about revenge for all the people who were nasty to him in high school! I love to hate Darla, in a much different way I love to hate Cordelia. I knew a lot of girls like her, and they all loved to pick on me...maybe I am like Buffy...that would be cool! Sorry, everybody, but I have decided that since it is no longer summer (pout) and I therefore have free time (Homework, you say? What homework?), I am going to resume respon- ding to every post that interests me or to which I can add something. (I'll try not to quote from old posts TOO much, unless it's absolutely essential. Also, I am not usually going to state who sent the message/s I am responding to; it takes up too much space and people can figure it out on their own if they really want to know.) So, here are my responses to everything since the 29th (as in, the last 18 hours or so): - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.) This is my own addition to the list: For all you Darla fans out there, BtVS was NOT her first gig in the U.S. Julie Benz played Julie . . . some- body . . . (sorry, it's been kind of a while) in an episode of Diagnosis Murder on CBS last fall. She was a figure skater who faked an attack on herself so she didn't have to reveal that she couldn't skate anymore due to injury. (Of course, it led to someone's murder, but. . . .) Just thought some of you might like to know. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.) Darla is at least 500. I had actually thought that the Master said she was his favorite for 500 years, but I could be wrong. Buffy's "snappy pat- ter" isn't necessarily the last word on everything; she was just making an allusion to Darla's age. However, as one person commented, she could very well have been around for a while before becoming the Master's favorite. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.) On a related note, when Darla says Angel gave up a chance to rule with her in the Master's court for a thousand years, I believe she was referring to a thousand years, starting now. If he had killed Buffy like he was sup- posed to (in Darla's mind) and "come back to the fold," then he could have been one of the Master's faithful servants for God knows how long. Hence the thousand years was more of a reference to an indefinite, extremely long stretch of time. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4.) Where is the "Roguemarket?" I think I missed something here. I got the gist of *what* it was, but I would be interested in "buying" SMG, among o- thers, if someone could tell me where it is located. Thank you! - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.) Sharon Ruth: The song at the end of "Angel" was "I'll Remember You," by Sophie Zelmani. You can check out the lyrics at Anime Nut's homepage, the Domain of the Slain, but I strongy recommend buying the CD. It's great. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6.) Quickly, to the BUFFYFIC list!!! WHAT?!?!?! What Buffyfic list?! I've been trying to find one for ever and ever!!! (See what you miss being gone or busy all summer?) Would someone please be so kind as to let me know where I can find said list? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks a lot! - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7.) Yes; I, too, have noticed that I get odd looks when I tell people I'm a fan of a show called "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer." A get a great deal of them, in fact. As the other three television shows I watch (or watched; all have had some problems recently) semi-fanatically are Gargoyles, X-Men, and Babylon 5, I can sympathize a LOT. (Incidentally, BtVS is the only one I actually discuss with other people, and the only one I've had time for of late. Sigh. Long live BtVS!) Why is it that the best shows always seem to get a public reputation of being "weird?" Some people need to rethink their attitudes. Hmph. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8.) How on earth did Xander know where Angel lived??? I had wondered this myself. I mean, I don't think *Buffy* even knew where he lived. (Of course, if she *did* it makes you wonder why. . . .) Somehow, I also don't figure Angel for the type to be listed in the phone book, even if Xander somehow knew his last name, another thing I don't think has ever been mentioned. I hadn't really realized how holey (NOT holy! Sheesh.) our knowledge of Angel's current life is until just this moment. A man of pro- found mystery, no? So yes, that is a *very* interesting question to specu- late about. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9.) The Cubs have been among the walking dead all season; if only Buffy could put officially put a stake through their hearts and free up Monday nights for something worth watching! ROTFLOL! Yeah, gives us all something to hope for come Christmastime. . . . ("Santa? For Christmas, I want Buffy the Vampire Slayer to slay the Cubs, 'cause I think they're really vampires. . . ." -- Hmmm . . . that gives me an idea for a fanfic. . . .) Interesting suggestion, anyway. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10.) Okay, the whole "What is a home?" convo was interesting, but when it got into Berkeleianism, you lost me, not to mention the fact that the sub- ject heading no longer had anything whatsoever to do with what was *actu- ally* in the post. Which brings me to my next point. . . . - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11.) Could everyone please do me, and everyone else, a huge favor? If you're going to respond to only one small portion of a post, please, PLEASE change the subject heading if it's really unrelated. It really bugs me when I try to read a post and it ends up being something totally different than it claimed to be. (I'm not trying to be b****y, honest, but that really drives me nuts, as I only have time to skim the posts unless the subject is one I want to respond to.) Thank you. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12.) [N]ow I've got images of David B. in . . . [a] Red Cross ad with a glass of red fluid and a little red moustache saying "Got Blood?"Or, "Blood, it does a supernaturally-animated body good." Once again, LOL. That was hilarious. Now *there's* something I wouldn't mind seeing in a magazine. . . . - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alright, I'll stop there for now, and post the rest of my two cents' worth later. (Hmmm . . . I never knew two cents could be worth so much. . . .) - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alex Lubniewski jlubnie@madison.tds.net alexlub@geocities.com Check out my webpage (complete with BtVS section) at: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Lair/1326/index.html "It's rather poetic . . . in a maudlin sort of way." -- Rupert Giles ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Aug 97 22:29:28 PDT From: Alex Lubniewski Subject: BUFFY: Myriad responses to myriad subjects (continued) Without further ado (or any, for that matter), I shall now continue with my incredibly long earlier post responding to everything in sight: - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13.) Ahhh, Friday nights... when the people with social lives go out and party and the rest of us have the whole Internet to ourselves! Yay! No busy signals at the old ISP tonight, no sir! I used to feel *exactly* the same way! Now, of course, I'm one of those pe- ople with a social life. On the other hand, I met my new boyfriend through a friend who met him on-line. So, actually, the Internet can be a very good place to be on a Friday night even if you *have* a social life. (Oh, wait, maybe I shouldn't tell people that . . . it may eliminate the happy lack of busy signals. . . . ;-)) - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14.) This kind of reiterates #10, but oh, well. . . . [A]m I the only one who thinks the whole "what exactly is a home, and how far can a vamp enter it without being invited" thread deserves a stake through its heart? It's absolutely undead. I think it's unkillable. The notion of a threshold is too basic to the show. Hey, great line(s). You (two) said it much better than I did. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15.) Waddaya figure the Master was like as a little boy during the Dark Ages? Was he a sweet little boy . . . [o]r was he a little menace[?] Did he have any idea of what he would eventually do for a living (so to speak) when he finally grew up and died? Um . . . I'm not totally positive (I'm not one of those lucky people with every episode on tape to refer to ;-)), but I seem to remember Giles saying that the Master was the only one of the original demons (the ones that spaw- ned vampires) left on Earth, or near it, anyway. Or maybe it was that the Master was the first of the vampires created by the original demons. Either way, it would indicate that he was far older than someone born in the Dark Ages, and most likely never really had a "normal" childhood. Just a thought. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16.) Omigod! Nick was wearing sunglasses at ComicCon. None of the gang was wearing crosses. And they do most of their filming at night alrea- dy. Holy Ground! (er, Cow!), this could be serious! Those rumors about Hollywood might be true. Maybe they're just a buncha bloodsuckers (in a profane act of self-parody)! Hmmm. . . . I've often wondered this myself. The thing is, then most of the time anything said about vampires on TV would *have* to be false; if it were true humans might actually know a way to combat them. I suppose they could throw one element of truth in with every show, sort of an added bonus of a- musement for those "in the know." That way, no matter which reality you tried to use as "the Truth," you would be wrone nine-tenths of the time. It presents some interesting possibilities, doesn't it? . . . Okay, this is getting WAY off-topic, so I'll kill it myself right now. If this idea in- trigues you, e-mail me privately if you would like to discuss it. "We now return you to our regularly scheduled BtVS dissection." - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17.) These are all in response to humorous things said by James Bjorkman in his August 30th post: - ---------- a.) . . . why does all this talk of INNY's and OUTTI's make me keep looking at my navel? ROTFLOL! I thought the same thing when I read that post! - ---------- b.) Also, they're lucky they live in Sunnydale, to be in or out in New York City means something completely different. Then again, maybe there's a deeper meaning to shortening the series name to just Buffy, you know, like just "Ellen".... "When She Was Bad," huh. Hmmmmmm. ;) LOL! Part of that also occurred to me, although without the Ellen con- nection. Interesting theory . . . but what about Angel?! (Oh, well, I guess all the fans could fight it out for him . . . I think I'm beginning to like this idea more and more!) - ---------- c.) Oh, and some sort of ceremony should be held, Buffy has now been compared to Macbeth! I can see it now . . . but it would require the deaths of several major characters. (I think the only one that wouldn't have to die is Angel. ;-)) - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18.) I agree that the scene (of Darla skipping toward the Bronze with her vampire face on) was very good. That one and the one of the Pack were, in- deed, lyrical. Scenes like those are really awesome. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to enjoy them. My best friend is vision-impaired (she's almost totally blind), so scenes like those are nothing but interesting mu- sic to her. So, yes, while they were really cool, it's a good idea to keep in mind that having a lot of them isn't necessarily a good thing. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19.) What if Angel met another female vampire who had a soul--and she was one who decided to live like a vampire anyway. . . . That would give him an option he hadn't thought of...Kind of a "It's not the fact that you got back your soul, it's . . . what kinda soul you got back" argument? Actually, I think it is an option Angel probably HAS considered. I can't image him being able to live with himself, though, can you? I think Angel is too fundamentally good to let himself succumb to that temptation. (Of course, this is all speculation, but that's what we do best, isn't it?) - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alright, I'll stop there for now . . . again . . . and post the rest of my two cents' worth later . . . again. . . . - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alex Lubniewski jlubnie@madison.tds.net alexlub@geocities.com Check out my webpage (complete with BtVS section) at: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Lair/1326/index.html "It's rather poetic . . . in a maudlin sort of way." -- Rupert Giles ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Aug 97 22:29:30 PDT From: Alex Lubniewski Subject: BUFFY: Myriad responses to myriad subjects (continued) Alright, for the last time, here are my responses to (way too) many things which have been said on the list in the last day and a half: - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20.) Interesting analysis of the "threshold" metaphor in Buffy. Being "In" or "Out" is a great preoccupation with humans in general. But I think you're right in that it's especially salient in BtVS. A feeling of "belonging" is a basic human need (or so I learned in school), so it is very smart indeed that Joss plays that up so much in BtVS. Just another subtle trick to help us to identify with the show, and to keep us coming back! ;-) - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21.) Actually, I think it was more that she was making fun of him. Sort of a visual aid to her comment, "Last time I saw you, it wasn't high school girls." Darla was a wonderfully perverse creature, and I'm sure even her choice of wardrobe was carefully designed to get under the skin of the victims of her mind games. That is a very profound observation. I had never really looked at it in quite that light before. I think you are absolutely right that she thought out every aspect of her mind games before performing them. Using visual as well as aural stimuli would certainly be another way to get to Angel, and I think he was probably one of the few men who *didn't* fall for Darla's tricks. Of course, she never thought that her games wouldn't work on him, since she had obviously been able to manipulate him at least somewhat in the past. And of course that failure to see that her power over him was gone was what brought about her downfall. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 22.) . . . I said, "Oh, me and Josh go way back. Old friends. Then there was that period of estrangment, where I think we were growing as peo- ple. But here we are, just like old times. I'm moved." No one got the reference, but it was fun anyway. :-) Yeah, I have a habit of doing that, too. Not necessarily just with BtVS, but also with quotes from other shows or books that I find particularly hum- orous or appropriate. That's gotten me some odd looks, too. (See #7 in the previous installment of this post.) But it's usually worth it, anyway. Hey, that'd make a great YKYBWTMBTVSW: YKYBWTMBTVSW . . . you respond to anyone and everyone with quotes from the show, until you have no snappy patter but that which came from BtVS! (If someone else said basically the same thing, sorry.) - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 23.) If Angel and Buffy were to reunite, would they be able to create a baby? That is a question which prompts a considerable amount of thought. Willow asked Buffy much the same thing in "Angel" ("Ooh, and what about the chil- dren? . . . I'll be quiet now." "No, no . . . I need to hear this. . . .") when they were studying at the library. However, it was never responded to and I would be very interested in what Joss would have to say on that. Anybody want to ask him? ;-) - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHEW! Well, I'm finally done, and I will try not to do this to you all any- more. (I just can't help it!!! I haven't been able to dissect every second of BtVS all summer, and I miss it!!!) Thank you all for listening to me. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alex Lubniewski jlubnie@madison.tds.net alexlub@geocities.com Check out my webpage (complete with BtVS section) at: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Lair/1326/index.html "It's rather poetic . . . in a maudlin sort of way." -- Rupert Giles ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Aug 1997 23:44:50 -0400 (EDT) From: Marcus Baker Subject: Re: BUFFY: Tycho Brahe, repressed memories and Darla On Sat, 30 Aug 1997, Peg Carr wrote: > It was Faraday who died because his bladder exploded. Tycho was most definitely the one who died with from the bladder problems. Everyone from one of my science classes remembers that, because our teacher was telling us about how a bunch of the original scientists died, and he saved that one for last. Katrina, back me up on that one? And I don't remember who got stuck with a silver nose, but I don't think it was Faraday. - -mbaker@mbhs.edu ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Aug 1997 21:43:39 -0600 From: freaksicle@juno.com (Danny Reed) Subject: Re: BUFFY: IKWYDLS/Buffy Promo On Sat, 30 Aug 1997 15:23:29 -0400 (EDT) AToMiCxSeX@aol.com writes: >Hey, > I don't know why everyone is getting SOOOOOO upset about Buffy >dancing >with Xander, remember in " Angel " Buffy said, " Raincheck ? As the other three television shows I watch (or watched; all No kidding. Same thing with me, not only when I tell people that I like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but when I tell them that I like Mystery Science Theater 3000 and They Might Be Giants. Of course, that may just be because I live in Bremerton. Bremerton is to hicks as the Hellmouth is to vampires, witches and she-mantises. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Aug 1997 00:15:54 -0400 (EDT) From: Xainith@aol.com Subject: Re: BUFFY: IKWYDLS/Buffy Promo In a message dated 8/31/97 3:54:08 AM !!!First Boot!!!, you write: << It would be perfect if she finally realized that Xander is the man for her. >> ummm no Xander is not the man for Buffy. But Xander & Willow now those 2 look cute togeter. The right guy for Buffy is Angel and they also look cut together. Oh yes, I know of only one other person that likes Buffy at all. Luckily, at least she likes it as much as I do. People I know don't give the show a chance not only because of the movie, and the fact that it's named Buffy, but because it's a show based on a movie. Not all shows that started out as movies are terrible. For example, "La Femme Nikita," which happens to parallel "Buffy" in a lot of ways. - -mbaker@mbhs.edu ------------------------------ End of buffy Digest V1 #267 *************************** To subscribe to buffy Digest, send the command: subscribe buffy-digest in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com".
