Sometimes it's cool to live in Canada when it comes to Buffy...got to watch it at 9pm on CKVR, then at 12am on KTLA... s p o i l e r s p a c e fave scenes... Xander about to lick the ice cream off Willow's nose...then coming so very *very* close to the kind of kiss that would have made my stomach flip... Principal Snyder talking away while Giles and Ms. Calender acted out his words... Xander's bet about how long it would take Giles to say something about *consulting his books*... Buffy saying "I missed you too" to an empty window... Xander telling Buffy he'd kill her if anything happened to Willow... Buffy smashing the Master's bones into talc then running into Angel's arms ... The end was also way cool...I was wondering what on earth Joss was doing with that upbeat tacky (imho) music at the end...until it cut to the Annointed One saying "I hate that girl" Loved it, loved it, loved it !! And btw, how on earth did the library get fixed up so quickly and beautifully...doesn't it look the same as it did last season? Just saw "When She Was Bad" Glad that action & scares were still the focus, with some Xander & Willow cuteness up front for softening. A few things: 1. Lose the St Elmo's Fire Music at the end while the three of them were talking in class. I would have rather heard what they were saying. Xander suggested miniature golf, then miniature tennis, then...? 2. Cordy watching Buffy in the Bronze and not being jealous or thinking Buffy's a loony, but being *concerned* for Buffy! What a twist! And threatening to dance with Angel just to wake Buffy up! (then getting abducted, that'll learn her!) 3. Giles did look tall (shot from a lower angle?), young, fresh, and *healthy*! Nicer suits? Doesn't look so undead and book-buried as last term. 4. Calendar almost looked like a school girl herself when she and Giles first connected. Makeup toned- down? Hair a little disheveled. She looked a little like Marcie (hey Marcie was cute, just mental). 5. I'm *not* liking Buffy's new "all blonde" look. I keep thinking of old bleached-out Donna from 90210 (who's ironically now a brunette). The chestnut blonde/brown mix from last season was *perfect* IMHO. Don't know why they messed with it. I'm OK with Xander's new hair, though it does make him look older and less geekish (Xander still really *acts* young and geekish!). 6. So the famed and feared Buffy flirtation with Xander from the promos turned out to be just a cruel tease and a case of seductus interruptus! Ha! Good for Joss. He suckered us just the way Buffy suckered Xander. Yay! (it would have been weird if Buffy had really meant it). I thought Buffy's new hair looked great, but something about Xander just didn't look right. Ms. Calendar also seems to look different. Not any better or worse, just different in some way. I think Joss did a great job with Cordelia. She obviously can't stay the same as she was last season cuz she knows too much. But, she also can't really join with Buffy and gang cuz its just not who she is. Hence, her character in this episode. She seems to of mellowed a bit, but you could still see traces of the old Cordelia. And let's hope that this was the last that we will see of the "new" Buffy. Although it was a great line, hearing Buffy say "kick my ass" just doesn't sound like her. I just can't really picture her character saying something like that. The ending was great and showed what true friends Xander and Willow really are, just acting normal, as if everything was cool and nothing ever happened. I think Buffy finally realizes what great friends she really has. Anyway, that just what I think. Not very deep, just simple thoughts. Here's how I see it: 1. She was severally traumatized by dying 2. She reacted to it by just denying the reality of the whole situation. This included acting as if she couldn't die, pushing away any assistance, training constantly as if this would make her less vulnerable. 3. In an effort to minimize the pain she acted out her anger on her friends and loved ones. Part of this was probably an unconscious attempt to protect them, partly it was an attempt to minimize the overwhelming emotions she was feeling by isolating herself. 4. She snapped back into reality when she was able to focus on the danger for her friends instead of her own personal pain. I am also glad that the show did not go out of it's way to explain every single behavior. It is more interesting to try to pick up the motivations from the nuances of character behavior and interaction. I have found that the cast of Buffy communicate alot through looks and body language. I find this a strength in the show. I think it would be a tragedy if the show felt compelled to have everyone say out loud what they are thinking. Most shows do this but human beings rarely do. Just my two cents. When you think about it, she didn't wear any esp. revealing clothes or say anything or touch Xander in a particular untoward fashion, and yet that was one of the most erotic performances I've ever seen! @_@ Melrose or 90210 would have to flash many square yards of bare skin & cleavage to achieve the same effect. And while I'm not a big fan of Cibo Matto, their music lent just the appropriate creepy/sultry touch. For some reason, they respond better to "authority" if that authority-figure is known only as "Mr. Giles", rather than "Rupert". I don't know WHY this is so, but I know it's true. When I visit or help out my mother for class trips, or just plain help in the classroom, we always have the children call me "Ms. McLerie" The first year she was in that school, we didn't, and the kids wouldn't listen to me at all. (Very BAD move, kiddies! ;) ) Now however, if I say "jump", they do it asking "How high" while up there! X-I don't know what your problem is, what your issues are, but as of now, I officially don't care. X-What are you going to do? B-I'm going to kill them all. That ought to distract them. G-Where's Buffy? X-Dealing with her issues. B-So, are you going to kill me, or are we just making small talk? C-What an ordeal. And you know what the worst part is? It stays with you forever. No matter what they tell you, none of that rust and blood and grime comes out. I mean, you can dry-clean until judgment day, you are living with those stains. MC-Yeah, that's the worst part of being hung upside down by a vampire who wants to slit your throat: The stains. C-I hear you. G-Punishing yourself like this is pointless. B-It's entirely pointy. B-I put my best friends in mortal danger on the second day of school. G-What are you going to do, crawl inside a cave for the rest of your life? B-Would it have cable? G-That was hardly the worst mistake you'll ever make. That wasn't quite as comforting as it was meant to be. OK, no spoiler space in this one. I just wanted to say that Xanders comment about killing buffy if willow was hurt was EXCELLENT! Maybe he's finally realizing what he's got right in front of him. Can't wait for the rest of the season. cordially, Mike Z. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Sep 1997 10:10:56 -0700 From: mike_loriz@juno.com Subject: BUFFY: Re: buffy Digest V1 #293 and SPOILERS WOW!!! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - What an episode! Top ten reasons why I can't decide what I liked more: 1. Buffy challenging Angel to 'kick her ass'. 2. Willow and Xander almost kissing. 3. Xander telling Buffy ' If they hurt Willow, I'll kill you' 4. Cordelia! MORE CORDELIA! 5. Buffy looking so vulnerable right after that nightmare. 6. Buffy being one hell of a tease. Poor Xander. 7. Buffy vs. Cordelia for B**** of the week. 8. Giles having that psychotic look on his face during Buffy's nightmare. 9. Angel holding Buffy after the battle. 10. Buffy hoping her friend would forgive her. If the season continues like this, it's going to be a good year. Joss, you are EXCELLENT!!!!!!! cordially, Mike Z. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 1997 10:39:43 -0400 From: Jesse Jou Subject: BUFFY: When She Was Bad: My Two cents *SPOILERS* When She Was Bad? It should have been called When She was a Big Pile o' Mean. Nasty girl. The use of spoiler space has been killed on Xmission, but I feel very strongly that the feelings of our poor WGN friends should be respected in this matter. Thus, do I respectfully include: ****SPOILER WARNING***** I'm ambivalent about this premiere. Too slick. Too Hollywood. What happened to long/3/4/closeup strung tastefully together on mediocre film stock in that way of Bruce Seth Green (who directed a number of the eps last season)? Where did all that richly textured, orangish lighting come from? And the steadicam?! Sure, circular shots of Xander impregnating Buffy are nice, but I ask you: will better production values kill that hungry, renegade filmmaking spirit that infused the first season? Joss, I love you like I would love a very distant relation who shows up periodically at family reunions and starts drunken brawls, but I worry about these things! Edesk has already noted that we have misidentified the Aaron Spelling show that this was patterned on. Not Buffy 90210, but Sunnydale Place. What was with the Buffster channeling the spirit of Heather Locklear? Is she the patron saint of bitchy blondes? Santa Amanda de Melrose? And the snack bar/student lounge must go! It smacks of Angel Grove, if you catch my meaning. Thank gods no one "shifted into Turbo." But enough griping. Let me rhapsodize about how incredibly beautiful everyone looked. (Okay so that richly textured orangish light did serve a purpose.) Although it is unfortunate that the lovely Ms. Calendar's only legacy of her brief stint in Todd McFarlanes' world was an unflattering resemblance to Prince Valiant. Visible Changes, stat! I've said it before and I say it again. The Buffy cast is the most uniformly attractive cast on television. Someone needs to put them in a coffeetable book ASAP. (Herb Ritts/Annie Liebovitz, are listening?) Let me also rhapsodize on the kissus interruptus between Willow and Xander. The two of them look so good together, their faces only an inch apart. Homina. Oh Willow, will you ever win? Let me also rhapsodize on the nice plotting and storyline. I like the idea of Buffy's judicious application of the principles of torture, especially in context of her Gestapo-like manipulation of Claw Vamp in Teacher's Pet. Although to revisit our nice argument on moral relativism in BtVS: don't vampires have feelings too? Isn't Buffy wrong to play their game of casual sadism? Let me also rhapsodize about Xander threatening to kill Buffy if anyone had hurt Willow. What was he thinking?! What could he do her? How would he do it? Run her over with a car? Burn her house down? Surely not hand-to-hand, unless in a fit of psychotic passion he were able to find hidden reserves of murderous intent and strength? In fall do a young man's thoughts turn to ways of killing his enemies. How sad Absalom (I'm assuming this was the African-american vampire) bit the big one. He was cool in a Faulkneresque kind of way. And the fight choreography, mmwah! primo! Buffy was whomping bootie right and left, something fierce. Now we understand why Tae Kwon Do is useful for taking on multiple opponents. Also, Angel's tentative exploration of the dazzling world of color was noteworthy, although I wonder how a vampire with no visible means of support can afford maroon velvet shirts that emphasize the smooth skin of his neck. I'll probably think of more stuff later. BTW, I watched the premiere last night with some of the xmission family: bjorkman, Holiday Golightly, miss hayses, and pumpkinhead. I couldn't have asked for better company. And our Buffy salon afterwards was most delightful. JJ ------------------------------ Date: From: RemencusL@jsc.mil Subject: BUFFY: Spoilers! Spoilers! When She Was Bad... Joss is the most twistedly evil man....Ain't it great! ;-) A N G S T F E S T I watched the episode with my best bud Ruth. I think between the two of us we didn't breath during the first 40 minutes of the episode. I really hated seeing the "bad" Buffy for so long. However, it's a testament to Joss's writing that he can wrench that kind of emotion out of me. However, if Buffy hurt Angel one more time....well...let's just say it wouldn't be pretty...."we're talkin violence, strong language, adult content...." The poor guy really got an emotional beating in this one. At least the others got a semi-happy ending. The last scene was a really nice warm fuzzy after all the angst. I feel most for Angel and Cordelia... In this episode more than any other, I realized how lonely Cordelia is. For all her shallow and spiteful comments, she's surviving the only way she knows how. Her parents seem to neglect her. I remember back to the pilot when Cordy says her mom doesn't get out of bed much any more. Cordy made light of it, but this girl is hurting. As for the comment about stains, that's how she deals with her "inner moppet." Clearly she's thought of the events of prom night, and she's wanted to talk to someone about it. I think she's got her own issues.... And poor Angel, outside the Bronze...He was trying so hard to help Buffy... But boy was Buffy bad...OUCH!!!!!!!!! My favorite Giles moment was definitely the opening sequence with Ms. Calender, the stammering "hello", followed shortly by the "naked?" The opening Giles/Snyder/Calender scene was so classic Buffy. ROTFL!!! Of course, the Xander/Willow moments were adorable. I love those two. There so sweet. I hate the vampire interruptus, though....can we say Ivanova interruptus syndrome all the B5ers out there. ;-) Leslie Natpack~HPotCoS~GASPer~AGA~Slayer~BotCoJ Buffy Music--http://members.aol.com/laremyb/private/buffy/main.htm "We could sledgehammer our enemies into talcum powder, but we did that last night." - Xander LaremyB@aol.com or RemencusL@jsc.mil ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 1997 10:33:01 -0700 From: NAZARIAN@ORIX.COM Subject: Re: BUFFY: Spoilers: Opener > > Weren't you MORALLY disgusted? I didn't like this show becoming > "Melrose-on-the-Hellmouth"--even for a minute!! Anyone morally disgusted with Buffy's behavior last night (or any of the dealings with the interpersonals) does not clearly remember high school- we are talking about a hormonal, cruel, vicious society that thrives off of sexual frustration- and a caste system that gives power to the beautiful- Buffy was acting out some pretty extreme trauma- almost to the point of my translating it into the Master being some sort of molester. That was the energy she gave off- If you think about that comparison, then the strange behavior is easily explained (I'm not saying that is the only comparison either- it was just the first one that occurred to me- think of the anger expressed in the training scene) as that of a young woman who no longer knows who she is anymore- and is so alienated from her past experiences that she must alienate those around her to retain sanity. Coming on to Xander gave her control. Pushing away Angel gave her control. She was shutting herself down. With this kind of background, how could you be morally offended by the scene with Xander? That was not Buffy- that was a girl acting out of extreme duress. It wasn't like she was enjoying any of it. I am extremely proud of the way Joss presented Buffy's reaction to the events in PG. This was not something that was shrugged off- in fact, at the end of WSWB- I still wasn't completely sure that we'd seen the last of these after-effects. However, Buffy HAD to jump back into things.... I also really enjoyed the blurbs about her parents. Talk about a problem child! And it is beautiful that they blame it all on teenage angst. I agree with whoever thought the principal steals scenes. Even with all the monsters around the hellmouth, he always seems to be the most evil thing around (as well as being a chilling/hilarious portrayal of education administrators) Everyone looks okay- Buffy did have Heather Locklear written all over her in the beginning, but at the end of the episode I think seh looked more wholesome. Also remember she was coming back from a summer in LA- as a native Southern Californian all I can say is OF COURSE SHE WAS BLONDER! It was summer! She also looked a lot thinner. Willow looked beautiful. Xander was too sexy all of a sudden. Angel was the same old boring guy. He needs to regain his cruel edge. He can't go soft just cause he likes the Buffster. Giles was awesome as always. ASH definately has his character DOWN! The dream sequence was pretty disturbing. I think there was more there than we took in at first glance (luckily I have a rewind/slo-mo button) all in all a very good show. Cordelia was a bit unbelievable- and I don't like that she is featured in next weeks as the victim again.. is she going to be one of those characters that they "fit in" every week???? On a scale of 1 to 10- I give it a solid 8. It did move too fast- but worked pretty well with a lot of material- and it was SLICK. Any show that can make people writhe in anticipation for 3 months...... oh and my fave parts for those of you who care: Xander and Willow- of course, almost kissing The dream sequence and Buffy working out in the library.... WOW! all in all, I am a happy girl. miss hayse ------------------------------ End of buffy Digest V1 #295 *************************** To subscribe to buffy Digest, send the command: subscribe buffy-digest in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com".
