Her father as much as said Buffy was distant the whole time she visited him in LA. Buffy has already decided before she gets back to Sunnydale that she wants to distance herself from the people she cares about. She clearly feels she can't protect them. I'm back (though you didn't know I was gone)--missed you all. I watched "When She Was Bad" last night when I got home and *loved* it. Given the promos and the news about the new direction the series might be taking this season I had some reservations about it, but was very pleasantly surprised. I absolutely *loved* the beginning with Willow and Xander, then the bit at the end, when he was holding her. I don't particularly like Xander as a character, though he does have a certain charm, but I thought the moment at the beginning was very real and very well done. Buffy walked in to the room with obvious trepidation at having to face those two, and her fears were laid to rest by her friends reaction. No need to further discuss the ugliness that transpired, just let bygones be bygones. Buffy screwed up, her friends love her enough to look past that. If her behavior continues, however, I'm sure she'll hear about it. I don't think we need worry about that though. Those of you who've struggled with Buffy's treatment of Angel need to remember that after dealing with the Master, and dying because of it, she's looking at vampires in a whole new light (no pun intended). Yes, she knew they were evil, but she never really had all that much trouble disposing of them in the past, and in fact always had a rather cavalier attitude toward the whole slaying thing. That must make a 16 year old just a bit cocky, no? The Master toyed with her, something no other vamp had ever been able to do, and she paid a huge price. I think reality set in and it scared the hell out of her. She didn't want to have anything to do with vampires, any vampires, including Angel. (I love when she calls him a vampire, then corrects herself and uses the term "Undead-American". I cracked up!) In this mindset, do you really expect her to say "Vampires are the most heinously evil, vile, horrifying creatures on the face of the earth, but Angel's ok 'cause he's so cute"? It's almost as if she has, for the first time, truly accepted what her role of Slayer means. Last season she struggled with trying to balance the life of a high school girl with that of Slayer, then the whole Master/dying/reviving thing happened. Time off in LA over the summer gave her a break, but the minute she gets home BAM!! it's Slay time again. Withdrawing was just her way of reacting to this whole thing, not being able to balance it with her normal life, and resenting the fact that she's stuck in this horrifying sitch. Remember her "I'll kill them all" line? Remember last season when she said something to the effect of "I've killed a lot of vampires, but I've never hated one before"? I'm thinking she pretty hates them all right now, and I don't blame her one little bit. Yes, Buffy is the Slayer, and that makes her very special. She's also just 16, which means she's still trying to figure out how to deal with her emotions and react to lifes traumatic moments, and man does she have traumatic moments! Her reaction wasn't far fetched, IMHO, but she seems to realize her actions were not well received by others, evidenced by her little chat with Giles before class. Please don't be too hard on the poor kid, she's had a rough few months! Oh, and I loved Cordelia's discussion with Ms. Calendar about getting blood stains out after being sacrificed for the Master. That's right up there with used Mercedes having leather seats. Same old Cordelia, thank God! Being a teacher, I find it difficult to handle classes that know my first name. It becomes a joke to them. For example, Buffy never calls Mr. Giles by his first name. In "WSWB", Giles didn't take kindly to being called "G-man". All in all, when students learn your first name, the "authority-figure" status begins to disappear and a party atmosphere will develop if it is not stopped. IMO, Joss did an incredible job with that scene where Giles and Ms. Calender meet up for the first time. However, each crewmember has a very defined role in what his/her job is... Worf = security, klingon stories, Odo = security, changeling, vs. Quark stories, Sisko and Dax stories, Jake and Nog stories, and so on. There is an interaction, but there are clearly defined times when that interaction is professional or recreational. On Buffy, the Slayerettes are all running around like headless chickens, debating whether they should aid Buffy against her wishes, or if Xander should kiss Willow, when poof a vamp pops in, Buffy arrives and complicates things... One expects any of the Starfleet officers to hand a beat down to a Gem'Hydar soldier threatening a family. But it is a different story expecting Willow to defend Xander from a Vamp. I think the cast is fine, just don't feature everyone in every ep... but I see a problem with this approach... every one is in school, or in the bronze (where anything can happen) so its like both professional and recreational at the same time. more comments? JMS filmed the entirety of their kiss and strongly hinted scenes of relationship consummation. But WB (remember them?) removed it, fearing negative audience reactions. Claudia, and cast and crew were proud of the scene (accordingly to a B5 crew guy on a panel at BayCon) and sad to see it go. ObBuffy: Joss will probably continue to use "romantis interruptus" (ended by danger or monsters) as a suspense device, as it is used in so many teen slasher films. The excitements produced respectively by sex and danger are physiologically very similar to each other (even psychologically similar to some people, especially teenagers, as Joss is likely aware). Castro" Subject: BUFFY: Erm...How many SPOILERS? (Sent this to the planetx list yesterday. Though I couldn't leave you guys out, though...) This is probably about the twentieth one, but I didn't find any of the others perfect enough for me to reply to and still get all I wanted to say about the ep into the email so... H E R E ' S T H E S P O I L E R Well, BABS had their little event tonight. Of course, it was only Lisa Rose, Dawn (and her mother) and I, but it was *fun* nonetheless. I have to say that at the end of the episode I didn't know how much I liked it, but now, about 45 min. later as I write this email, I can tell by the total elation that's infusing my body that the new season...well...rocks! Where to start, where to start...I knew Buffy was going to be changed, but I didn't know she was going to be such a, as Xander put it so beautifully, "bitca". Man, she was being extra *harsh*, and I'm still trying to speculate exactly why. What do people think? Was it because she had some spiritual link to the Master that couldn't be broken until his bones were dusted by a sledgehammer? Or was it just ultimate stress that couldn't be relieved until she beat up some more walking corpses? Go Cordelia! Buffy's treating her friends like crap, acting foolishly, immature, and a hundred other things, and though Cordelia still knows her place in the social web of life, it's Cordelia who steps up to Buffy and tells her off. Cordelia responsible? Cordelia mature? I know I usually side with Buffy, and should, but Cordy gave her what she deserved! Wow. We all saw in the promo Buffy telling Angel that she's moved on, to the living, and then we saw her dancing with Xander and asking him, "Did I ever thank you for saving my life?", but what we didn't see was what I believed to be the most scathing remark of the entire episode: "Don't you wish I would?" WHAT??!! All images of Xander/Buffy romance shatter, and Buffy has become the demon whore of Sunnydale high school. As Obi Wan might say, "It felt as if millions of voices cried out and were suddenly silenced." Whose voices are those? Yes, us fans. How about, "Are you gonna kick my ass?" during the Angel/Buffy confrontation. Ooh, she really knows how to punch good. I can see how well she could have played "The Evil One" on "All My Children". I do have to admit, though, her sadistic side was entertaining, and Joss really portrayed it well. I knew she was going to torture that vampire, but *GODS*, that was gruesome! I almost pitied the soulless beast! On to the subject of romance other than Buffy's own trials. Willow/Xander. We knew something had to interrupt their kiss. I thought it was just going to be Xander or Willow's decision that the line of friendship was too thick to be crossed, but, boy, that vampire couldn't have come at a worse time. I heard some rumors of Angel/Willow, but I'm thinking Xander/Willow is a lot more probable. Steamy! Giles/Ms. Calendar. I can *feel* the GASPers gasping from here. I can feel them going into convulsions of ecstasy and jealousy at the same time. Am I wrong? Boy, I never thought Ms. Calendar was such a babe until now. I'm jealous. But for a different reason than most of the GASPers *wink*. It was interesting, at the end of the episode, I was speaking during the part that the Annointed One said, "I hate that girl." I believe I was saying something along the lines of. "It took me all summer to gather those guys. Man, I hate that slayer!" I guess I anticipated the line. *shrug* Sometimes you don't have to MST3K. The humor's already there. And I have to say better special effects than last season. And we finally see what happens with vampires and fire. That was *cool*. Oh, and I can't forget. Principal Snyder takes the cake. I can no longer envision Buffy without Armin Shimmerman. Forget Quark--Snyder is king. To wrap this 'long as hell' email up, I have to say that all in all, I really liked the episode. I was as afraid as everyone that *more romance* would soften up the show to a point where it was malleable enough to crumple up into a wad and toss into the trash. But the romance was implemented well. Very well, as I've already described. The episode, however, had a different feel to it from season one. And I guess it's partially because it's the next season, and things are bound to look different and feel different, but there's just a different feel to it now. Maybe more serious (although the humor's still there--anybody say 'trout'?), maybe more intense, but it felt different, more dramatic. Who knows, it could be just a feature of the season premiere, but whatever it is, I like it. The only thing, however, the one thing that I can firmly say the episode could have done without: That corny music during the last scene. C'mon. Who decided to fire up the "making money" infomercial at the end of Buffy. Christ. Don't let that last remark color your opinions though. Buffy's on the air again and it's going strong. Long live Buffy (and Cordy too). }:)> Chris 2 **Keeper of Xander's Cool** **BABS Loremaster** ========================================================================= BABS Homepage: http://www.porter.ucsc.edu/~weasel/BABS/babs.htm ========================================================================= "No, no, listen, don't listen to me, listen. Yes, I was thinking about this as that scene played out. Angel has feelings for Buffy, obviously, but he also has all that experience. In his time, I'm sure he's seen a lot of teenage girls throw hostile snits, and it looks like he saw right through this one. He seemed very much like an older wiser person patiently trying one approach after another to communicate with a young person who just didn't want to get it. I think Angel could develop into a really intriguing character. Despite not being the bravest guy around, he has gone to bat when he had to. But more than that, he has denied himself his primary and deepest animal pleasure (feeding on live humans) for over 90(?) years, all because he has a heart and a mind to do the right thing. He has disciplined himself to an extreme degree, and few people seem to be willing do that. I think this guy has many hidden depths. Just like Buffy, you can't judge him just by his looks.
