Replies should go to Zino@FOXNEWS.COM. --sah ***** See, I have a problem, which is that I s*bscribe to this list at work, and I'm off on Mondays and Tuesdays. So when I get in on Wednesday mornings, I have a nice big stack-O-digests to, erm, digest before I can prattle on about my opinion of the week's episode. Well, today I just haven't the patience, so I'll apologize now if I'm ignoring or, worse, inadvertently parroting anyone else's opinion. I'm sad to say that I found "Reptile Boy" the most disappointing episode yet. It was like David Greenwalt (and anyone else who may have, uncredited, written the episode with him) was on autopilot. Xander's jealousy seemed obligatory and recycled to me, as did the half-hearted verbal sparring between him and Cordelia. It was the first episode of "Buffy" I've seen yet that seemed as though it was written according to a formula. (Give Buffy some good-looking boys to talk to, one of whom may or may not be Angel, make Xander jealous enough to do something stupid about it, have Giles forbid Buffy to have a life, add water and hey-presto! Instant Buffy Episode.) The shoddiness of the episode's title character didn't bother me overmuch, since it seemed to me that the episode was more about the fraternity than the actual creature. But the end did seem somewhat rushed -- one hack and begone Makata! (Was he named after power tools, or is it just me?) Even worse than the lack of effort that seemed to go into the episode was the way this episode screamed "filler" to me. I say that because it seemed to focus on relationships between the main characters, but nothing went anywhere! Angel and Buffy ran in place, essentially, talking circles around each other but not actually saying anything. Willow was marvelous but relegated to the sidelines (albeit very very visible sidelines), far away from the central dynamics of the episode. Xander and Cordelia, as I noted before, seemed to be riffing on each other out of tired habit, rather than out of any real rancor. And even Giles seemed like he was working from an old script -- recent developments in the Slayer/Watcher relationship were out-and-out ignored, it seemed to me. Anyway, since this *is* my favorite show, I want to find something good to say about the episode before I go away, so I will. There were two things I really enjoyed about "Reptile Boy": One was Willow. From trying to explain silly Indian cinema to Buffy and Xander, to lamenting the tilt that Buffy's lying to Giles put into her world, to giving Giles and Angel what-for, I thought she shone. I would like to see some of that gumption in a situation (or episode) where it might make more of a difference for her and/or her life. The other thing I liked was SMG's performance -- she really conveyed to me the pain of her unwanted obligations and her discomfort with her chosen method of rebellion (the frat party), and that vibe kept me interested in an episode I might otherwise have dismissed. If you've read through all this long-winded rambling, I thank you and I promise never to do it again. Until the next new episode, maybe. Brian J. I'll be seeing a press screening of IKWYDLS tomorrow night. CANNOT wait!! ObBuffy: RB. I've seen that a few have recognized that Xander and Cordelia have begun some Olympic Event verbal sparring, and that Cordie's holding her own. I thought I read it somewhere (maybe in an old Starlog from March with Joss) that a possible interaction between the 2 may be in the plans. No quoting, just what I *think* I remember. Does that count as a possible spoiler?? If so, sorry! I wasn't home on Monday night to see the show, and as I'm taping them all anyway, I got to watch and rewind -- often. One thing of all in RB stood out: After Cordie delivers her now classic "pizza delivery" remark to Xander, he looks at her blankly, blinks, looks at her friend and then just walks away to join B and W. Since he is my fave character, I kept my eyes on him when no doubt we were to focus on the dialogue between B and W. Xander actually looks a bit shaken! I rewound and watched again. It's there. Either Nick was supposed to make sure that little bit of a reaction on Xander's part was in the scene, or Nick himself was just tired and having a bad day as an actor. It was really, truly w-e-i-r-d!! I'm gonna watch again tonight to be sure. Also, this just in. For those of you in the Los Angeles area, the monthly Shrine Auditorium Comic Con on Sunday, November 9 will be Buffy-themed. Joss and Nick will be there. The shirtless wonder! And his mother Aphrodite "as if!" totally cracks me up. There is nothing quite so brilliant as making the Goddess of Love and Beauty into a Valley Girl. but that's not the point...) Although the series Xena and Hercules brings in anachronistic slanguage into the story (as well as anachrosnistic everything else), I don't think that the same effect would work in Buffy. First of all, Buffy's really not quite so much "camp" as Xena and Herc. Second, Angel and the rest of the aged undead are supposed to have lived life in all the ages, so IMO, their language and attitudes and personalities should reflect that wisdom (or folly, as the case may be). > Not to say this is > the effect they want with Angel. But I don't think they're > particularly worried about making him sound historic. And > Spike is deliberately anachronistic. I guess my problem is that I expect a little more weight from a 241 undead guy and I offer up language as one possibility to show that. Otherwise, Angel is just starting to sound like one of those teen-age kids with crushes all over again. I'm on a little Highlander: The Series kick, so naturally, I'm going to go to Methos. The Old Man is supposedly the oldest living immortal. The loveliness of his present day character is that he is so irreverent about all the things that happen around him in the "mortal" world. He gets off zippy one-liners like Xander, so I don't think that the show has room for an Angel/Methos character. It's sort of nice to have someone tell you that "Hey, life is just a bunch of stages and nothing really changes over 5000 years." Or, Angel could be more Duncan McLeod. He carries the weight of the world's problems on his shoulders, locked in a battle between good an evil, his conscience (now that Angel has one) driving him to always be the warrior for good. Or, as in another series, Angel could be a bit Nick Knight. Locked in a battle of good and evil within himself. And before anybody jumps on me, I don't mean to say that I think Angel should be any of these characters totally. I think that Joss has created a unique world here with individualized characters, but I miss the mystery of Angel -- when we didn't know why he was always skulking around, but we hoped that he would be. I miss the angst of Angel -- when he had to decide between his old (literally) friends like Darla or protect Buffy. From the last few eps -- SAR and RB -- I just have no interest in Angel except when he puts on his vampire face. glee - ------ Xander: To read makes our speaking English good. - "I Robot, You Jane" Buffy the Vampire Slayer ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Oct 1997 17:34:56 -0500 (CDT) From: "Grace M. I kept cringing everytime she was attempting to break the chains, thinking "She's not going to do it!" Then I would have to cringe somemore if the Slayerettes had to come and rescue the poor Slayer. I mean, it's great and wonderful that Buffy has friends who truly would put their lives at stake (pun) for her, but if it's a daily thing, it kind of defeats the purpose of having Buffy there. Just let Angel stop the vamps and the monsters. What made the episode even greater was the fact Buffy did kill the monster and save everyone mainly BY HERSELF. She did it most last season which really made her character stand out--and aptly so. UCLA was the main source of the preview and the movie was broadcast from there to other campus' across the country including mine which is NYU (New York University). The movie was scheduled for 9:00 and i got there at 8:30 because I worked until 8:00. The student loungue was so packed I was afraid I wouldn't get in. Luckily a guy from my writers workshop class was like third on line and he let me cut him. The first 20 people (definately not me) got full size official IKWYDLS posters and the rest of us got smaller ones with 1-800-Collect displayed prominantly on top. I took about ten of those. First the movie was delayed because of the massive response at UCLA. At NYU all the passes were given out but some people didn't show so there were seats. I was pissed over this cause my friends couldn't get passes and it turns out there was room for them. oh well. When the movie finally did start we had to sit through two music videos from the soundtrack. The audience did not like this and there was lot of booing and heckling. There were alot of "I want Buffy cries" and I had the unpleasant experience of sitting behind Beavis and Butthead who kept saying " I want Buffy....I want Buffy to sit on my face...Let's see soem T&A...blah blah blah." He kept talking right out loud with comments like this even when the movie began. I wanted to kill him but my friend was polite and asked him to be quite nicely. The movie was incredible. I don't want to spoil it for anyone but I will say that it was world's scarier than Scream (which I loved). So many parts had me jumping. The audience, with the exception of the dumb hecklers around me, was good. Lots of cheering, screaming, and yelling at the scream like "Lokk behind you Buffy". I loved the experience and wish I could repeat it (of course I'll try on Friday. You know I'm seeing it again). For all of you who saw it or will be seeing it look out for this: is it just me or did Jennifer Love Hewitt's boyfriend in the movie look very similar to Xander. That's the first thing I thought when the movie we first saw him. Maybe it's just me but when you guys see it I'd like to know if anyone else thinks so as well. If anyone has been unsure of whether to see it- trust me- go. You'll love it. And like me you'll find yourself yelling out- "Come on Buffy, you're the slayer. You can escape from the killer". This movie is fun, fun, fun- and lots of scares. Any more info will have to be requested privately. Anyone know where this puts Buffy in the WB lineup? I'm guess it's gotta be closer to the top than to the bottom. That 16 share in LA must have the WB execs drooling. That's respectable for the big three. Any ideas why the numbers are so much better in the big markets? I think they are working the James Dean, "rebel without a cause" heartthrob thing with Angel. So a classic historical manner or way-of-speaking would screw that up. And Spike strikes me more like a punker born in 1970 than 1790, but this is the effect they want I believe. The wonderful irony about Methos is that he is younger and lighter in spirit in many ways than Duncan is, despite being 10 times as old. Duncan is so somber and serious at times that he seems old before his time. In the same way, Giles seems older to me than Angel does, even though Angel is five times as old as Giles. It's all in the attitude. Hmm. Maybe their high-priced lawyers cut a deal for them. In California, these crimes would have qualified for the special circumstances for the death penalty (multiple murders, the combination of kidnapping and murder). To avoid the death penalty, they pled guilty and accepted a life sentence? This time, she was *avoiding* her Slayer duties. Yeah, somebody mentioned this on another list too. So it's not really the fact that she lied. It was her intent behind the lie (selfish vs. altruistic)? And the end justifies the means? A little morally strange IMHO, but it still makes sense. >1) That was much earlier in their relationship, before there was as much > trust--and even friendship--as Giles and Buffy share now. This is an interesting point that didn't occur to me. I guess violation of trust would mean more after all they've been through now than it did back then. BTW, how far back is "back then"? Does anyone remember what epsiode Buffy said the famous "Yeah I lied, I'm a bad person, let's move on..." line in?
