Moving the Buffy is a gamble with potentially large rewards. Right now "Buffy" is after "7th Heaven" - very low carryover. It's also up against Monday Night Football and NBC's comedy salvo and not likely to draw many viewers from either. The real fans - like us - will follow it almost anywhere; WB's problem is to find a reasonably deep pond is which it can troll for new audience without being eaten by sharks (like ER or NYPD Blue. Then you either validate your absence or go to detention (if this is a reoccurring incident), etc. I think it's pretty much the same in the Buffyverse -- who's to say Xander didn't get in trouble for skipping three classes? Re-read pages 21, 24, 52, & 77-80. It seems clear that they're refering to *all* the Gods as demons, and the word "worship" is used specifically in reference to this "pumpkin king". Add the foolishness about the word Samhain/Samhuinn--which just means `New Years Day'--and the 1000 year anachronism about the pumpkins; to me the result is a complete waste. > In the book, the Slayerettes ward against Samhain's power by using pagan > iconography (the burning yew sticks) and not traditional Christian > imagery. The use of yew, beeswax, and apples is common in both Pagan and Christian magickal traditions throughout Europe. The wards weren't particular to either faith. Also, any attempt at research by the authors would have shown them several actual wards used in either/both religions for such occasions. Joss and the other writers for the show do their arcane `homework'; why didn't Golden and Holder? > I didn't see it as religiously intolerant, just as taking a simplistic view > of paganism (and given its target audience, that's not surprising). Not "simplistic". False, horrendous *lies*. As to the rest, I guess that would depend on the "target audience". Joss has treated Occult studies and Pagan religions with great respect in the show, and even created an openly Pagan character with a recurring role. The Pagan and Magickal communities (separate, but overlapping groups) have really taken to this show; I don't know a member of either group who *doesn't* watch. Since the viewers of the show are a primary audience for the books--aren't they?--I think the publishers went way off-target. > BTW, Dave, I really liked your suggestion of Buffy as Erinyes, although > wouldn't she then be compelled to hunt Angel down for killing his parents? Good point! I only mentioned the Erinyes/Furies as an alternative *within* Classical mythology to Artemis. To me, the Durga imagery is closest; in Her most famous battle, she defeats Her opponent by (A) kicking him in the head, then (B) stabbing him through the heart, followed by (C) beheading him. Y'know, I never watched SMG on AMC, but from the pictures I've seen over the net I'd have to say that next week's look is something highly akin in many respects. The 18th Century noblewoman look they picked for Buffy just *doesn't* fit her at all, or is it supposed to be the way due to the hilarity of the situation? }:)> Chris 2 (anyone else agree?) **Keeper of Xander's Cool** **BABS Loremaster** ===================================================================== BABS Homepage: http://www.porter.ucsc.edu/~weasel/BABS/babs.htm ===================================================================== Ampata: "You are strange." Perhaps Buffy is getting detentions left and right, but she spends them all doing service in the library...you know, sorting the books that all those students use during the day. Just an idea. And Giles is a faculty member. I could see him counting Buffy's patrols and training sessions as detention-equivalents, couldn't you? That would explain a *lot* of things. Why nobody ever wonders why Buffy & Xander spends so much time with Giles (I don't think Willow would need this 'excuse'.). Why Giles appeared and tapped his watch in _Reptile Boy_ (she officially had 'detention' in the library again). Why she hasn't been expelled for skipping classes yet. Darla said he lived above ground. To me it looked more like a room in a warehouse. It must have underground access since Darla left when the sun was up. Which brings up another question...how did Darla just wander in uninvited? Either it is a commercial building and so not perceived as a home, rather as open area, like the school or vampires have no 'right of home' being dead and all and other vampires can just barge in anytime. Either way it is a staking just waiting to happen. All Spike has to do is bring a few friends and Angel is history. The guy has to move. Buffy's mom is strapped for cash, how about renting him a room??? :) Preta ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Oct 1997 06:54:56 -0700 (PDT) From: preta@earthlink.net (Preta) Subject: BUFFY: Moloch, IRYJ >On Mon, 20 Oct 1997, Susan Foster wrote: > >About a possible source for the name `Moloch'... Being fairly new to the list I have to ask...are we looking for alternative sources for the name Moloch, other than the historical one? He was a rather powerful god/demon (depending on who is writing). With the head of a bull, worshipped by Carthaginians, Phoenicians, featured in Paradise Lost, the immolation sacrifice of children in the Valley of Hinnon (Gehenna). That guy. Mind you, I have never seen the episode. Perhaps I can borrow a copy from someone. Actually, it was explained, at least on my network, during the closing credits for Buffy. It was annoying, to say the least. It's a contest that Taco Bell is running, to promote their disgusting Monster Eye tie-in product. I think it's a straw with a big plastic eye attached to it. If you call the number on screen and tell them how many times the eye appeared during the show, you win $500, I believe, if you're the 20th caller. Maybe it's just a local thing, to promote KOFY - - TV 20, the San Francisco Bay Area afilliate that carries Buffy? I really, really hope they don't do this next week, but since it's the Halloween episode and all, I'm sure they will. ObBuffy: The promos next week look great. Seems like we'll be seeing a very different episode from what we're used to, all sorts of interesting role reversals. I'll be glad to see Xander and Willow taking a more active role in the Slaying game, at least for one episode. I guess I'm just used to being spoiled every week by new ones! Even if this one wasn't too old (as opposed to WTTH), everyone looked so much younger! I've decided I like Buffy's hair the length it is now than how long it was the first season. But Xander is just the opposite. His hair looked better then. The promos for next week are very intriguing to say the least, although we didn't get much from them. Anybody have any guess on who that unknown man was? Could he be the secret Giles has been holding back or the Merlin who put the spell on the costumes...or both? Buffy looked cute in her outfit, and did you see her hanging off of Angel? Hehehehe....sorry, but that's Cordelia's job to hang off guys! I don't think this constitutes a spoiler but.... j u s t i n c a s e My speculations about this are as follows: The costume that Buffy chooses reminds Angel of Drucilla way back when.... remember we had a reference to them being intimate in the past- and that Angel hurt her and perhaps played some part of turning her into a vampire.(some interview that I read). I'm hoping that Spike and Dru have a hand in Buffy choosing her costume... As for Giles- I have no clue as to what his dark secret is, but I'm looking forward to more speculation before the week is through. miss hayse ------------------------------ End of buffy Digest V1 #390 *************************** To subscribe to buffy Digest, send the command: subscribe buffy-digest in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com".
