Can anyone tell me why exactly they are showing reruns? Not that I don't like them, just wondering? Do they want to spread the new ones out in a certain way or they just figured they'd show this particular rerun at this particular time? Although you constantly hear astronomical figures about how much networks are paid for advertising, in truth most shows lose money as they are produced. Even "Seinfeld," with its oft quoted "million a minute" rate of advertising, costs NBC more to produce than it brings in; NBC loses money every time a new episode airs. Networks therefore have to make money elsewhere, through reruns and through syndication. (NBC also has the luxury of guaranteed high ratings for whatever show happens to be sandwiched in between "Seinfeld" and "ER," but a network like WB doesn't enjoy the same privilege). Thus, the concept of reruns. A show makes a maximum of twenty-two shows per year, during the season from September to May. The famous "sweeps" months are November, February, May, and the mostly ignored July. The concept of sweeps is currently outdated and meaningless; advertising rates are re-calculated repeatedly over the season more often than simply during sweeps months. In the past, however, the Nielsen sweeps ratings were the only ones used to calculate advertising rates, and thus new shows air during mostly those months, and reruns, mixed in with new episodes, rear their ugly heads in off-months, such as December. Even though the concept of sweeps is now obsolete, networks still tend to group reruns into the off-months. The reason why is simple: if one network began airing new episodes for popular shows more often, eventually other networks would be forced to follow suit, and in the end everyone would end up with the same market share but with less revenue. Thus, networks are sticking to their old traditions and showing reruns, keeping everyone (except the viewers) happy. Hope that helps. - - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Dec 1997 19:34:39 EST From: VxDarlaxV Subject: BUFFY: mailing list hewo i remember someone had the email addie for like three mailing lists on their signature ( i think it was the ms. calender list , cordelia list and drusilla list ) ... well if that person could email me the addies i would be eternally grateful thanx ... even if ur not the person and u have the addies please email them to me ... thanx a bunch ! .. email it to me privately cause i don't wanna disturb the list ... thanx again ! ~ luv 637 darla ~ email addie vxdarlaxv@aol.com - - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Dec 1997 22:45:15 +0000 From: "Robin Carroll-Mann" Subject: Re: BUFFY: Prog? The amount they make per episode honestly makes me queasy. Is it up to a million an ep for Jerry yet? Or is it just close? Puh-lease. There's NO need for that. Can you imagine a world in which reruns only existed in the summer? Ah, bliss! *giggle* I think it has the most to do with the aforementioned overblown production costs...but, you know, what are you gonna do? Some shows still make 24 eps a year, though, I believe. The adreneline rush and passion that give Buffy the fighting ability she has stem from the fact that every fight she enters has an unknown outcome. Granted, some are cake walks, but she doesn't get too worked up about them. I think Giles wanted her to be able to fight as hard as she always does in the hopes that perhaps the prophecy was wrong. Everyone knows that death comes to everyone, but that doesn't mean that we take it lightly when it comes to us or to those we care about. Giles cares about Buffy. I can't see him telling her about the rise of the master and then "Oh, by the way, he kills you. Oh well." I think the idea of having Buffy deal with someone evil who is human is an interesting conundrum (pure speculation on my part, of course). I'll be disappointed if he turns out to be something more. GILES: "Yes, it's terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true, the bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats. We always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies, and everybody lives happily ever after." Some bloodsuckers in the animal kingdom can actually detect a person's blood type and hone in on one type and avoid others. In this case it's mosquitoes, and they like people with type O blood and avoid people with other types, and no I'm not calling dear ol' Buffy an insect, but if mosquitoes can do it, why not a slayer? This is cutting edge research, so who knows how far the phenomenon extends. So maybe the Buffed one can, say, smell a vampire's, er, "special" type of blood in some circumstances, like when she's walking around outside, but has trouble in other places, like when she's surrounded by blood, um, people in the Bronze (like School Hard, when she didn't recognize Spike as a vampire) or there's some other problem. It doesn't have to be conscious, just something that gives her that special feeling when they're around. She may even mistakenly think it's just 'cuz of their fashion sense or something. jb "Behold the weirdness." I am uncertain if this is Eastern Time or Pacific Time. It was mentioned that the ENTIRE CAST would appear. I then scrambled to my monthly cable guide and for Monday at 7pm it just reads "Special". I then checked by weekly TV Guide but it said music videos where on at that time. Does anyone know anything more about this program and if it is 7pm Eastern or Pacific Time ?
