Vampires are dead. They're supposed to be >this way. I know what's coming next - It's canon (boom!). It's been stated by his Jossiness, and I'm not disputing the stated facts on the show. *However* I would also like to point out that the term they use to describe vamps is the "undead" not the "dead." What I'm proposing is that vamps, although not alive in the traditional sense of the word, are alive in some manner. Sure, that may not be a popular opinion for the list in general, but it works for my interpretation of Buffy-verse. I'm not asking people to agree with me, just to think about it. >What do I say to all the controversy surrounding a vampire's need for >blood? IMHO, it has nothing to do with the oxygen in blood due to their >very dead nature. Vampires merely need blood for certain unknown reasons, >and most likely reasons having nothing to do with science as we know it. Still - (to tie this in with the Good vs Evil debate) looking at the grand scheme of things, the world has a certain sense of order to it - a sense of order governed by science. While I agree that there are certain things in the world (Buffy and real-life) that are beyond science's explanation or understanding, they still have their place in the order of life and will tend to follow the rules set before them. Although the universe is proceeding towards a state of entropy, that doesn't mean that the various elements of the universe are chaotic - they follow the logical path of the least resistance that uses the least amount of energy. What I'm trying to say is - if vamps are demons who have set up shop in a human's body, why not continue to use that human body's resources instead of draining on it's own energy (via the Hellmouth)? It's much more efficient to use the cells of the human host to respirate and create energy than to deplete it's own mystical supply of energy, which can be put to better uses. >The undead are creatures beyond human know-how or understanding. They are >animated through what we dub "magic" or "mystical energies", and are drawn >to hubs of power known as Hellmouths. Why do they need blood? That's their >own business. See above. And I don't like the explanation "that's there business." While I can accept an unexplained plot device for the purpose of portraying a larger theme in literature or movies, TV series are different. If I am going to devote an hour or more of my life each week to the program I expect to see the show's TVverse explored thoroughly - from character psychologies to how the different canonical elements work. >'Sides, would it be quite as horrendous if vampires needed a regular diet >tomatoes and ginger to survive? We couldn't even call Buffy, the Vampire But a diet of tomatoes and ginger would do nothing to solve their problem of nutrition given the facts that we know about vamps. Therefore, that comparison is faulty. >Slayer a horror show any longer. Martha Stuart might have to take over the >helm! I can buy the mysticisim of the demon - maybe the demon "gets" something from the victims' blood (hey, I'm an FK fan, too - I saw Franchesca). But the fact remains that the demon is in a *human* body that is governed by *human* physiogioical rules. Angel is obviously *not* a zombie, and something must be keeping that beautifiual body in tip-top shape. And while the explination of "mystical enegry" keeping it alive is perfectly acceptable, a mort more conivenene system is already in place. Why not use it? While its assurdely not foolproof biology (my teacher would be laughing if she read this post) I think that as a general theory it does nothing to hinder the mystical aspects of vampirism - is anything it adds a more human element to Angel and the vamps, making their burtal acts all the more terrible. kimmie (so, when does Buffy get a Dead Horse FAQ?) ________ Kim Sefcik, Richie Reservist (Clan Denial) ~ MFWC & PWFC ~ Wombat Extraordinare Chancer ~ Cousin ~ Early Edition Lover and Yet Another Bleepin' X-Phile Keeper of Giles' Past / Keeper of Angel's Lower Undergarments Secretary of the GASPers / Maintainer of the "Strange Luck" FAQ "I am Richie Ryan of the Clan... wait, can we try that again?" - - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Jan 1998 23:15:22 EST From: deathsfury@juno.com (J. When SMG was on MTVLive when they went to commercial before she was actually interviewed, the camera went backstage to see what SMG was doing in the "waiting room." SMG was cleaning up the room, picking up empty cans and paper cups. By doing this simple act it showed that 1. she is a considerate person 2. she didn't think it was beneath her-so as of now I do not think she is in anyway a egomaniac. 3. she hates being around a mess. 4. it was a natural unplanned act, a reflex if you well-she saw a mess and cleaned it up. She did mention during the interview that the room was a mess. the previous guests the music group had left it in a humorous way about the guys wildness. This simple act of cleaning up the room when she didn't have to revealed alot about SMG character IMHO. She didn't call someone else to do it etc. It was a true insight that revealed a tiny bit of what Sarah Geller really is made of. A humble Sarah. Therefore I don't believe all the rumors and snide remarks that people, including gossip columnists that are trying to malign SMG into another David Caruso say.
