I think Joyce is a perfect example of a single mom who feels totally inadequate when it comes to being a parent to Buffy. It's quite obvious that Buffy doesn't need a parent. She's much more mature than her mother, and this has to make Joyce feel like a fish out of water. There's really nothing for her to *do* when it comes to parenting Buffy. So she compensated by "laying down the law" -- grounding Buffy. One of those "I'll show you whose boss!" kind of things. She was confused and didn't have a clue what was going on. Grounding Buffy gave her a sense of control. For her, it killed two birds with one stone. It showed Buffy who's boss (Joyce's idea of being a parent) and gave her something she could get a handle on, since she was in total confusion as to what she herself had just experienced. The problem is... this was the perfect time for her to *really* be a mother. The bump on Buffy's head, the "gas leak", etc. were what she should have been focusing on. But with Buffy, I can well imagine that "let Mommy kiss it and make it better" never amounted to much -- even when she was small; so that kind of mothering went out of their relationship so long ago that Joyce simply doesn't know how anymore. >Not to mention the fact that the >gallery she owns seems to keep her there until 11 pm every night. I'd think of vampires/demons as being very perverse and enjoying negative emotions like hatred; the demon in a vampire strengthens negative emotions and reverses positive emotions into negative ones. What's left of Drusilla's original personality would hate Angel for what he did to her family; her demonic aspect would enjoy feeling that hatred (and would also enjoy the perversity of being involved with someone she'd hate that way).
