This list is for discussion of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," both the TV series and the movie. The address to post messages to the list is BUFFY@XMISSION.COM. The buffy FAQ can be found at http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Cavern/1763/buffyfaq.html. Please check it out ASAP--Cagey has done a wonderful job with it and it will answer a bunch of your questions about the show and fandom. PLEASE READ THE FAQ before posting questions to the list-- many common questions are covered there. Because we want this list to be a great place to talk about "Buffy," we are setting up a few ground rules. If you've ever been involved in a discussion list, many of these rules will look familiar. Hopefully, they'll make list life more interesting (and more fun) for everyone. Please note: we enforce these rules. This is an extremely high- volume list, and we want to make sure that the volume is relevant to the show. 1. Keep posts on topic. Topics should be related to Buffy the series, Buffy the movie, the actors involved in either project, etc.. Discussion of vampires in other universes is fine as long as they're being discussed in relation to the Buffy universe. 2. Please be careful with the use of strong imagery or language in consideration of younger list members. Think "rated PG." Also, no masking (replacing one letter of a potentially offensive word with an asterisk). 3. No advertising of non-Buffy related items or services. If you want to post information about Buffy-related merchandise, conventions, etc., clear it through one of us first. Also, no attachments, or binary files of any sort (including images, wavs, MOVs, etc). 4. Please don't post fiction to this list. There is a separate Buffy fiction list (subscription info below). NOTE: Due to numerous list violations and repeated warnings, the penalties for rule 5 have been temporarily modified. Currently, if you violate spoiler protection, you will be immediately uns*bscribed from the list for one week. 5. If you get advance information on a new episode, or see an episode earlier than the national viewing time, and you want to post about it, please do the following: **Mark the post as a "spoiler" in the subject header. **DO NOT give away the spoiler in the subject header--be vague! **Leave about twelve lines (blank or with non-spoiler info) at the top of the post. This ensures that anyone who doesn't like knowing about an episode ahead of time is "protected." :) The blank space is for people whose mailers automatically open up the next piece of mail, without giving them a chance to see "spoiler" in the header. Spoiler warnings are not necessary after the start of the episode's national viewing time, which is currently set at 9 p.m. Mondays, Eastern Standard Time. Spoiler warnings are not necessary for reruns. 6. Most importantly, there will be ABSOLUTELY NO FLAMING ONLIST. We have absolutely zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour. Flames can kill a list, permanently damage relationships, and make life a lot less fun for everyone. Broadly defined, a flame is a personally derogatory, inflammatory comment about another list member, their progenitors, or about any of the actors, writers, directors, producers or crew of "Buffy." Disagreements-- even heated ones-- are expected. But the minute you start slamming someone personally, you will face the Wrath of Jill and Sharon. First offense: offender is uns*bscribed for one week. Second offense: offender is uns*bscribed to the Buffy list for a minimum of three months. If the offender returns and flames again, they're offlist permanently. And no, it doesn't matter that the actors, writers, etc. from "Buffy" aren't onlist; we won't put up with anyone flaming them anyway. There are slander laws against it. It's also common courtesy. Determination of what is (and what is not) a flame is made by the listowners, and their decisions are final. Determinations of any penalties associated with flames are also made by the listowners, and their decisions are final. 7. Related to #6, the listowners reserve the right to "kill" any discussion threads which either of the listowners deem offensive, or which appear to be degenerating into a flame war. If either one of us declares a topic "dead," it's dead. Anyone who continues the discussion thread, against our express wishes, will be immediately uns*bscribed for one week. 8. Please limit quotes of a previous post to four lines maximum per point you are responding to. Buffy is a high traffic list, and we're asking s*bscribers to be mindful of wasted bandwidth when they respond to posts. For example, here's an original quote: >I just love Buuffy the Vampire Slayer. It's my favorite show, and about the only thing I watch on television anymore. I look forward to each and every episode. DOes anyone know hot to write to the stars of the show, or where to write to show our support? Willow is my favorite character, but I like Buffy a lot to. And Giles! Woo hoo! I recognize him from VR5.< If you want to ansewr this person's questions about where to write, there's no need to include the extra stuff, so your response should look like this: >Does >anyone know hot to write to the stars of the show, or where to write >to show our support? You can even clean it up further and put it onto two lines, but you get the picture. Only include the relevant stuff in your response, so that people get what you're talking about. Penalties: First offense: Offlist warning (clearly marked WARNING: Overquoting). Second offense: Removal from the list for one week. 9. Please limit your .sig to 6 lines maximum, but do include your name and email address at the bottom of each post so someone can respond to you privately if they want to. Penalties for not following this rule are the same as for #8. 10. Do NOT post personal information, or requests for personal information, about the cast, crew, etc. of "Buffy" to this list. Personal information includes (but is not limited to) home address, telephone number, email address (unless the individual gives it out freely), etc. It's certainly fine to discuss who's dating whom, or how tall someone is, or things like that. But anything that could constitute an invasion of personal privacy (or could potentially be some type of threat to any individual) is strictly forbidden on this list. The penalty for this is ONE warning-- ONE. If it happens again, that person is permanently uns*bscribed from this list. If you have any question over what you're posting, and whether it violates this rule, please email either one of us. 11. And last, but not least, we reserve the right to deny subscription (new, renewed, or continued) to the list for any individual(s). IF YOU'RE S*BSCRIBED TO THE REGULAR BUFFY LIST AND WISH TO CHANGE TO DIGEST: You need to uns*bscribe from the Buffy list, and res*bscribe to the digest. Send a message to majordomo@xmission.com In the body of the message, put uns*bscribe buffy Then, send a second message to majordomo@xmission.com In the body of the message, put s*bscribe buffy-digest You'll go through the same approval process that you got when you subbed to the regular Buffy list. If you're s*bscribed to the digest version, and want to change to regular mail, do the opposite-- unsub from buffy-digest, and resub to buffy. THE BUFFY FICTION LIST To s*bscribe to the Buffy Fiction list, follow the same procedures as listed above-- just substitute buffyfic or buffyfic-digest for buffy or buffy-digest. TO UNS*BSCRIBE FROM ANY BUFFY LIST send a message to majordomo@xmission.com In the body of the message put uns*bscribe buffy (or buffy-digest, or buffyfic, or buffyfic-digest) Again, welcome! If you have any questions about these rules, please contact either one of us offlist. You can find instructions on how to uns*b on the buffy list page or in the list rules which were posted in a separate note along with this messages. NETIQUETTE In addition to the list rules, there are some netiquette conventions we are asking people to observe. 1. At a minimum please sign and put your email address at the bottom of the post. Some people's mailers strip out header information. 2. Be aware that the default reply to for the list is to the original sender. Check your reply to: headers very carefully. 3. Don't send test posts to the list. Send a regular post with buffy content instead--it will provide the same information and won't clutter up the list. HOUSEKEEPING >From time to time an account starts bouncing. If we get three bounces from an address we uns*bscribe it because we get a bounce message from that address for every message sent to the list if they aren't on digest. This results in *a lot* of bounce messages to wade through in the administrative account. If you find yourself mysteriously not receiving list mail it's due to bounces, and no other reason. If we are going to remove you for disciplinary reasons you will be notified. Here are the reasons behind bounce uns*bs. 1. Full mailbox. This affects AOL users more than anyone else, though I suspect it's a factor for Juno, WebTV, and Hotmail users as well. These accounts have limited mailbox space and fill up quickly when not checked regularly. When that happens messages start bouncing. Both Jill and I strongly recommend that you go to digest if you do not have the opportunity to clean out your mailbox every day. Not only will it make us happy to not have to deal with bounces, it'll probably make your ISP happy as well. 2. Local configuration problems Sometimes an ISP goes down for no reason for a while, and we will receive bounces from an address. Your best bet is to contact customer support when that happens, then res*bscribe to the list once the problem is cleared up. IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE BEEN UNS*BBED Take the following steps in the order in which they appear if you think you've been uns*bbed for bouncing. 1. Send a message to majordomo@xmission.com with s*bscribe buffy (or buffy-digest) in the body. If you are s*bscribed, you'll get a message back telling you that you are. If you have been uns*bscribed, this will start the process to get you back onto the list. 2. Contact me (romana@mindspring.com) or Jill (jtkirby@mcs.com) for help. We will do what we can ASAP to help you out. 3. DO NOT send a test message to the list. You may send a buffy-related post to the list to test, but not a test message. If you have any questions or problems, please check out http://www.mindspring.com/~romana/buffylist/index.html. These pages contain information about the buffy list. That being said, here's my thoughts on the new episode: WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * B,B&B was very cute. Most of the girls ended up making a huge fool of themselves, (poor Willow!) Someone had posted a spoiler earlier mentioning that Buffy had a long and serious talk with her mother about Angel and the danger they might be in, but that didn't happen. It might have been edited out, but it seems to me that by the end of this episode, Joyce was still oblivious to the whole issue. Harmony makes a reoccurrence as Cordy's snobby friend ("You're a sheep!"), and Amy's a witch, but apparently usually limits her spells to little stuff, like getting out of homework. A while back in TV Guide, they had a small article talking about Gellar having been overheard somewhere complaining to a friend that she could be making alot more money doing feature films (this was while I Know What You Did Last Summer and Sceam 2 where out and going strong). TV Guide "claimed" that Gellar would probably bolt the show before long, and they cautioned her against doing so. Has anyone else heard about this? Was this discussed before here on the list? If so, can anyone fill me in? After all, we got to see Buffy last night, and let me tell you... S P O I L E R S P A C E Well, Cordy breaks up with Xander on Valentine's Day after he's given her a heart pendant on a silver chain; basically because her friends didn't like Xander... (How juvenile can you get... but wait.) Xander, brokenhearted and humiliated finds out that Amy inherited her mother's powers and is a fullfledged witch. He gets the pendant back from Cordy to be able to cast a spell on her, and has Amy work her magic. Lo and Behold, the pendant actually protects Cordelia and works on everyone else. It was rather funny seeing all of cordelia's friends mooning over Xander when usually he would be too low on the food chain for them to even bat an eyelash at! Anyway, Buffy, Ms. Calendar, and Willow all put the moves on Xander... Willow even welcomes him in his own bed, but Xander being the gentleman that he is, shoots her down (in a soft way) and goes racing out of the room. Xander realizes when he gets to school the next morning that it's not just his friends that are affected, it's every female in town. He goes in search of Giles in the library and is left there while Giles goes to find Amy to break the spell. Buffy comes into the library wearing pretty much nothing but a raincoat, but before she could strip for him, Amy walks in and a minor catfight ensues, with Amy turning Buffy into a rat. Oz slinks into the library while Xander and Giles are trying to capture RatBuffy, and punches Xander in the face, because willow had kept him up all night moaning about Xander.... Xander rescues Cordelia from a mob of angry girls, only to escape the school to run into another mob with Willow wielding an axe to kill Xander with. Xander and Cordelia run to Buffy's house only to have to ward off Buffy's mom who is under the witch's spell. Up to Buffy's room they go, to have Xander pulled out of the window by Angelus. Dru saves Xander from Angelus's clutches, only to almost bite him. The mob races onto Buffy's lawn and Xander and Cordelia run back into Buffy's house. From both entrances girls are racing in to kill Xander so that nobody could have him if they couldn't. Xander and Cordelia hide in the basement, while in the library, Giles and Amy are reversing the spell placed on Buffy. Buffy returns to being a human, in the basement of the school. Oz has been trying to find her and is down in the basement when the spell is reversed, leaving Buffy naked. Only Oz could make an uncomfortable situation cool... Amy reverses the love spell just as Xander and Cordelia are going to be annihilated. All in all, the show was cute and light... a great break from all the destruction that's been going on. I didn't give the whole show away because there are a few other parts that are sooooooo good, that you just have to see them Enjoy. She is currently happy on the show and has no plans what so ever to leave. Maybe later in the future but as of now, which she has a contract for at least 1 more season, she is not going anywhere. Neither is any of the rest of the cast. To my knowledge they have all be recast for a third season. - -Michelle http://members.aol.com/aglx/main.html - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Feb 1998 09:28:53 -0500 From: "Carstens, Adam" Subject: BUFFY: oscar outrage! the oscar noms are in and there are NO nominations for sarah michelle gellar, despite the fact she was in two wonderful movies this year...oh, hollywood, thou truly are a town of SHAME...and neither IKWYDLS nor Scream Dos were nominated for best picture! Oh the agony of it all! (everyone on the list -- this is a tongue in cheek message and no disrespect is intended towards Titantic, Kate Winslet, Leo Dio, James Cameron or the actual people on the Titanic...) There is a book with a vamp on a cruise ship. Can't for the life of me remember the name but it wasn't bad. Just FYI. Also, Kate Winslit was also in Heavenly Creatures which was a pretty wild movie. Boy, am I just full of it today, or what?! I was reading a Salon Magazine article about low rated tv shows and came across this. The article is at: http://www.salonmagazine.com/ent/tv/1998/02/cov_04tv.html but here's the relevant portion: The one great pirate treasure at the bottom of the Nielsens is, of course, WB's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (moving up to a record-breaking 84th in the Nielsens of Jan. 19-25), the most original, smartest, funniest, sexiest teen drama on TV. If Sarah Michelle Gellar decides to stick around (she's a movie star now, you know), the almost year-old "Buffy" will do for WB what "The X-Files" did for Fox. - -- John Nestoriak * "My shoes are too tight, but it Software Engineer * doesn't matter because I have The Telephone Connection * forgotten how to dance." jnestoriak@telecnnct.com * - Londo Mollari (Babylon 5) - - ------------------------------ End of buffy-digest V2 #96 ************************** To subscribe to buffy or buffy-digest, send the command subscribe buffy-digest or subscribe buffy to majordomo@xmission.com.
