What 2nd grader kid in any school in the world hasn't heard all the so-called 'bad words' you can think of in the school yard during recess? It's part of life. Words are tools used for communication. Sometimes a curse does the job of communicating what you feel. The real obscenity is not the use of such words, it is the misuse of such words indiscriminately (like f*** this and f*** that) and the co-existing lack of education limiting the user's awareness that are MANY other words capable of expressing so many other ranges of emotion and thought. A lack of understanding and openess can sometimes also lead to the misguided philosophy that suppression of such words makes the world a better and nicer place. The real solution is to delve deeper into it (e.g. H.L. Menckens' THE AMERICAN LANGUAGE where he takes racisms, vulgarities to their roots thereby giving understanding and perspective. Other wonderful reference books on the subject are: A DICTIONARY OF SLANG AND EUPHEMISM by Richard Spears, PARTRIDGE'S CONCISE DICTIONARY OF SLANG AND UNCONVENTIONAL ENGLISH. And of course, there are always those wonderful people in the Reference department at your local library who will be glad to help you in your search for knowledge and understanding.) funee (: (a big fan of Giles) _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I've never really been that impressed by Charisma as an actress but this was some really fine work. It seems to me that the real work in acting is in conveying meaning without words and this episode was chock full of that. Aly's performance in this ep was also outstanding and Nick did more than we usually get to see. I love writing like this that really gets an honest days work from the actors. The other thing about this episode that really impressed me was how the writters managed a significant "arc* story" in the midst of what was essentially a comic relief episode. We get major development along almost all of the relationships Xander/Cordy, Willow/Oz, Angel/Dru/Spike, Giles/Jenny. *the term "arc story" comes to me from the world of Babylon 5. B5 is written with a 5 year plan as to story progression. Not all episodes advance the overall story line however. An arc episode does. The litmus test is does this episode need to fit in a particular order. For example WSWB, SH, TDA, WML, Surprise and Innocence must be viewed in that order to make much sense. SAR and RB are virtually timeless and could fit anywhere in the season. - -- John Nestoriak * "My shoes are too tight, but it Software Engineer * doesn't matter because I have The Telephone Connection * forgotten how to dance." jnestoriak@telecnnct.com * - Londo Mollari (Babylon 5) - - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Feb 1998 15:40:43 -0500 From: John Nestoriak Subject: Re: BUFFY: Bewitched, Hot and Bothered (Spoilers!)
