Don't know if I need SPOILER SPACE but I put some anyways! * * * * * * * * * * * * * I just got through watching "Passion" and I have to say that was definitly the best ep I have ever seen on BtVS! Far better than "Surprises and Innocence" and I say this because we all knew what was going to happen in those eps. Here we assumed that the victim would be turned into a vampire but no. And the voice-overs from Angel were a fabulous touch! Expecially the one at the end! And then when Buffy voiced-over declaring that she was ready to slay Angel, so touching! I just hope that they find that disk. I started crying when Angel made Giles walk up those stairs expecting Jenny to be alive and in love w/him....and then he found her dead. And how he grinned when he saw Buffy and Willow crying. When the disk fell onto the side of the desk I absolutly sobbed. If only Willow would find that disk....she could restore Angel's soul. But would they Slayerette gang want to? Could they, even if they wanted to? And poor, poor Giles. I loved the way Buffy said she was ready to slay Angel now. And I love the way she depended on Giles. This ep was definitly the best of it all IMHO. I have a serious problem with watching women being chased (I can't watch the opening tag of "Reptile Boy"), and I'm still wigged by the Jenny chase scene. I'll never watch that part over again. AND the cable blinked out for about five seconds, just after Angel snapped Jenny's neck. Thanks, Chicago Cablevision. :::grr::: The editing from when Giles sees Jenny dead on the bed, to when the camera pulls back and the cops are there, is one of the finest bits of directing/editing I've seen yet on this show, or any show. Very effective without being manipulative or obvious. Angel watching Buffy and Willow through the window/curtains as they learned about Jenny's death was also extremely creepy and extremely effective (and affective!). The "talk" with Buffy and her mother-- good. Joyce was understandably upset, but also made sure Buffy knows how much she's loved. And the line about Joyce accepting that Buffy shuts Joyce out of her (Buffy's) life was true (for a Slayer or a regular teenager), but painful at the same time. Two minor beefs: 1) Wasn't Jenny's name something else (Janna?) than what was on her tombstone, and shouldn't she have been buried wherever she was from? I was going to also comment that she should have had a traditional Gypsy funeral; but she might have and we just didn't see it. 2) They should have held on the scene with Buffy/Giles outside the warehouse just a few moments longer to let the scene resonate a bit. It was a really moving moment. Good, good episode. At least Jenny's death was handled with style and some serious emotional impact. What a great episode! I have to admit that a couple of moments really got to me, particularly the scene where Angel was watching Buffy and Willow receive the news about Jenny. Very effective. I tend to prefer ensemble shows to hero vehicles, and often find the supporting characters far more interesting than the lead. Everyone got something significant to do in this episode, which is the sort of thing I love. Normally I'm against killing characters off, because I think it's a cheap ploy at ratings and melodrama that's often wedged into a story rather than being a logical part of it. While I'll truly miss Jenny and wish she hadn't been killed off, the payoff in this episode, and subsequent ones, is worth it. There is nothing cheap about it. This death has impact, furthers the story and conflicts, and reminds us all just how dangerous it is for the people around the Slayer. And I have to admit I do so admire a writer/producer like Joss who has the balls to take risks then follow them through. - --sah sah * romana@mindspring.com * romana@aol.com NatPack * Jungle Patrol * Bishop * Bossy the Lost Dwarf * BTVS Listowner Nat's B&B (moving shortly): http://members.aol.com/romana/natpage_stuff/ "She's out there, strong and smart and proud and gorgeous. If Oz is not Jewish, Willow's father may not approve of their dating. Ay Caramba! Alas, poor Jenny. I shall miss her chewing gum walk. So very wriggly. *sob* An extraordinarily powerful episode and moving exit for a beloved supporting character. A couple of things... 1) I'm really interested to see what kind of rationalizing the Angel/Angelus dichotomists will be doing for our boy after what he's done in this episode. Personally, I thought he was irredeemable since Innocence and am looking forward even more to his eventual staking. It's a pity that Jenny had to die at the hands of Johnny Fratboy. And it finally occurred to me what about David B.'s performance just isn't scanning for me: it's a curiously depthless performance for a character with such a theoretically twisted pathology and history. Seriously, he emits the aura of a Lounge Lizard; have the deaths of Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr. left a void in the Rat Pack that Angelus feels he must fill? 2) One of the biggest mistakes in this episode was the use of the voiceover throughout it. There are number of reasons for this: voiceovers like this invariably contain the sort of inane moralizing meant to sound deep but is really just banal, and also, they're meant to telegraph the actors' emotion or dictate the audience's emotional response to the action. Come on, guys, the actors' performances were strong enough to hold those scenes together without Angel breathing his way through Hallmark inscriptions. Try watching those scenes with the sound off and you'll see what I mean. I'm reminded of Virginia Eveland's fabulous observation many months ago on xmission that whenever Angel tries to seem deep, he winds up looking like a monkey trying to think too hard. 3) Also, I thought they took an enormous step backwards with Xander's characterization. Suddenly, the inappropriate snideness so irksome early in the season was back in full strength. Bothersome. Especially after the strong performance we got two weeks ago in BBB! Bring Back Flumsy Xander! That's all I'll say for now. Don't mean to sound so critical cuz I really did like this episode, but these things just stood out in mind. I doubt that any of her people knew exactly where she was, particularly since Angel killed her Uncle. Buffy and the gang wouldn't know where she came from either. So they did the honorable thing and buried her as a local resident would be. I think the thing that is a bit bothersome is that the Slayer is to have the ability to sense when vampires are near. Yet Buffy and friends passed Angel while coming out of the club during his newest kill. How can that be? She should have immediately sensed his presense and slaughtered the demonic Angel. Overall, my opinion is that Joss had a relatively "throw away" character killed. Chris Carter takes much more risk with the X-Files when one of his characters are murdered. "Deep Throat" from the first season, "X" a season or two later. I think they should have had Joyce or Willow be the victim. It would have been much more personal, more impact. Remember, Angel drove Dru to insanity, something like that would have been much more in that vein. - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Feb 1998 22:27:22 EST From: VvLdyDruvV@aol.com Subject: Re: BUFFY: tonights epi In a message dated 98-02-24 21:48:34 EST, Katharine_Zandy@fc.choate.edu writes: << I know this is stupid... but I still want Angel to get better. >> It definately ISN"T stupid, cause i'm feeling the same way....Angel and Angelus are two totally different people...and though it will be hard, i do think they'll forgive him, because more than anyone, they KNOW this too....now, i don't know if they're gonna give angel back his soul....i'm really having my doubts....oh please, oh please someone reassure me they will!
