What is it? The teens can kick some major butt, but the old guy, if he goes for a hit alert the censors! Evil as the whole idea is, where has Ethan gone? You have to wonder, always at Giles's weakest moments, Ethan pops up. Think, on Halloween when the vamps are in doors, Giles's old friend helps Sunnydale go havoc. Giles gets plastered and his girl friend goes through that phase in life that every posessed girl has, Ethan shows up. So, now that Giles is crazed and angered, you think Ethan has another orb?(we know there are more than one) Or, let us go by rumor, when the vampiric Calender rises, will Ethan show up to menace Giles more? S P O I L E R S P A C E A pretty good episode, I'd say. Not as good as Passions, BBB, or Surprise and Innocence, but well written. It's interesting that slayers can be infected by the common flu, while they're immune to most other things (except death, as Giles said). Having just started to watch Buffy in late December, I'm not sure what's been shown of Buffy's past previously, but I like how they tied the death of her cousin in with the plot and how it closed a chapter or her life. Not wanting to give away too much, I'll save the rest of my discussion for after others see it. A very good episode, very intense! I was on Angel's side before, but now I think he needs a good staking. Even if he does get his soul back, I think the guilt from his recent escapades might drive him crazy! I don't see how they could bring him back into the fold after this. Someone asked why the magic shop guy didn't put wards on his shop (sorry, I don't remember who - I get the digest). He would probably lose business if he did, because there are probably quite a few of his customers who use magic for "evil" purposes. Also, the door was open - an unspoken invitation to enter. Anyway, he knows magic, but he may not believe in vampires. I, too, have been disappointed in the character of Angel of late. I am afraid he is in danger of becoming a stereotypical crazed villian, one we've seen a hundred times before. For this series, the "good" vampire was a unique character, and I'm sorry that has been lost. Maybe it will come back. I guess that's it for now. I'm very behind on my digests, so I might think of something else as I read. Until then... [everyone in unison: Hi Dr. Nick!] This is my first post and as such, I dont know most of you, and you dont know me, so here's a quick background: 20 year old white male, lover of all things arcane (Mythological & 'modern'--vamp' esp.Buffy!). Not the most populated viewing group for this show, but hey, I'm an anomaly! Now to the show: Saw Passion and loved it. Upset that Ms. C had to die but it makes for a beautiful setup--Willow-"Hey guys, we can bring Angel back with this." Giles-"Uhh no. I think we stake his undead butt!" As to bringing back Jenny, I say no way! I liked the character, love the actress (Whoo-hoo), but some things are sacred. It ain't the 80's anymore; the good guys don't always win, and good guys die and don't come back. Sad but true. Death is one of the most potent forces in our world and therefore evokes the strongest emotions. Yeah sure this may only be a TV show, the people aren't real, but does it matter? This list is evidence that the answer is no. Does it really piss me off that Ms. Calender is dead? Yup. Would it cheapen her death, her character, Angel, Giles, and the entire show if she came back? Probably. But lets leave that to the capable hands of Mr. Whedon who has shown that he can put an excellent product on screen when his craetive juices are allowed to flow _freely_. The ep itself, technically speaking, was amazing. The music at key points, though the same song, was able to evoke different responses. The looks on Giles' face were brilliant all the way from his "I'm gonna get some" look to "Oh my god, Jenny's dead, it's time to drop the wine and look stunned" look. The "perfect night" set up by Angel was beautifully done. Xander's "...then I say 'faster pussycat, kill kill'" was fitting, witty, and great. The fight scene was great, Buffy rocked his world, but quite possibly the best part can be summed up with three words: GILES. FLAMING BAT. The fluidity in motion gave an almost casual look to his anger when he lit the bat on fire, and Spike's "No fair entering the ring unless he tags you first, luv" comment was excellent. As I'm out of adjectives, I'll stop ranting about the beauty that was "Passion". One question though. As I'm prone to do after I watch the episode for the third or fourth time, I put on the closed captioning, so as to catch some of the lines that I didn't quite understand. Now, in the VERY beginning of the show when Buffy and Xander are dancing and Angel starts his 'passion' speech, the captions are different from what he's saying! It's not an echo from another channel cause it's still Angel talking about passion, but the words _are_ different! I'll post the exact words tomorrow after I've had time to write them down, but has anyone else noticed this? He talks about passion being purple and depressing and though the mood of the caption-speech is similar, almost all of the speech is different! I dont know much about captioning but the captioners shouldn't have been this far off. If they decide to restore Angel's soul, the writers will need to come up with something that is either unique to Angel (such as it's different for him because his soul was already restored once before by the curse) or fiendishly intricate and complex to perform. But unfortunately, it's not working out that way. Ignoring repeats, Buffy's national ratings have been creeping down each week since the switch to Tuesdays even though Dawson's Creek has improved since its debut. Innocence got a 5.2, Phases a 4.9, BB&B a 4.5 and then Passion got a 4.2 (admittedly, I still haven't seen the final number for Passion: that 4.2 is a guesstimate based on the fact that for the night, The WB got a 4.6 and Dawson's Creek got a 5.0 so Buffy must have received a 4.2. Thanks to RayneFire for that Passion info.) It is true though that with the exception of Passion, those ratings are all better than the best ever performance on a Monday, which was a 4.4 for Surprise.
