After all, the Watcher is supposed to teach the slayer a >heck of a lot (as shown with Kendra) more than just how to fight. To >have someone do that more than once is a crazy amount of work. But they have time, it seems. Not to be too depressing, but Vampire Slayer isn't much in the way of a long-term career. How many Slayers make it out of their twenties alive? You can't really retire from this profession, not if your death is the only thing that will activate your successor. Watchers seem to have a comparatively safer job. Despite what happened in the movie (with Merrick), Watchers probably usually outlive their charges. And then what? Retire and write your memoirs? Design training manuals for future Watchers? Wouldn't most jobs seem kind of lackluster after Watcherdom? There could be advantages to Watching for another Slayer (not maybe the next one or two--the grief would probably be too fresh--but further down the line?). Think about what Giles is learning from Buffy: Slayers aren't always thrilled with their profession, it isn't the end of the world if the Slayer's friends know what she is, Slayers need time for their own personal lives, they are scared of dying. Yeah, Giles probably knew this in some sort of abstract way before he met Buffy, but she's making it real for him. Now consider a rather unpleasant (but realistic) future scenario: Buffy is likely to die way before Giles. Yet because he knew Buffy, Giles would have more to offer a future Slayer: he'd understand her fears better, know what did and didn't work out for Buffy that might help the future Slayer, and in general have practical, useful experience. If they're willing to go through the whole mess again, knowing that they're likely to lose another friend; if they're able to accept that possibility, then they'd probably be very good. Yes, there are drawbacks. Some Watchers might take charge of another Slayer, not from a sense of duty or responsibility, but to make up for what they see as past mistakes. Then it's all about their success or failure, and not about the Slayer's abilities or the fact that no matter how good she is, her luck's likely to run out. If a Watcher is that wrapped up in his/her own problems, they're not going to be much use to the Slayer. Hey everyone! I recently had to do a major report in my history class about vampires(My teacher is actually really into goth stuff, he told me once he studied demons, vampires, witchcraft, etc for a living)...Even though BTVS is a fictional show and Joss has his own vampire history, and probably a lot of you could care less about real vampires(if there is a such thing)I thought maybe I could share some history about them. I might as well, I had to read 9 books about vampires and I had to do a 1000 word report and he wouldn't let me just take notes from the show.... I found out that vampires usually don't drink blood...when they do it's for a sexual reason or to impress a person. They are said to have a bad temper and being very moody. On terms they're known as,needy, attentionseeking, grandstanding, manipulative, exhausting, monopolizes the conversation, jealous, huge ego,selfish,self-centered and so on. I read that part from a book that my teacher lent me. The part I don't get is the "exhausting" part. The vamps on BTVS don't seem to be exhausting. But the other parts describe Spike & Angel(without the soul) exactly. In here(the book) it says a vampire's emotions are deep, fervent, and powerful, they also contain psychic ability. (Psychic ability? Reminds me of Drusilla). Then it says once a vampire is fully satisfied it will become very cheerful.(Maybe like in Surprise when the Judge killed Dalton and Drusilla said "Do it again! Do it again!") It said vamps, when they fall in love almost become obsessed with their partner and if their partner rejects them they'll go through a state where they'll love anything including a box of tissue! I can't imagine Drusilla picking up a box of Kleenex and saying "I love you" to it. :) Well the rest of the history is boring, but in one book about demons it says something about "Death" .......maybe something like the thing from KBD? I don't know, but I don't plan on reading it, every chapter is about 200 pages long. C-ya.
