Why? Because I think Xander blames Buffy for Ms. Calendar's death. You can see it in "Passion," where he stares at Buffy while he delivers his infamous "Faster, pussycat, kill, kill" line. So now not only does he hate Angel(us), but I think he blames Buffy for what her erstwhile boyfriend has done. But really, how much can you hate someone you love? This may be repeating myself, but when Angel does get his soul back, 'cause Buffy won't kill him ( which is probably an incredibly huge dereliction of duty, but that's for another time), he may feel so guilty about what he has done that he may ask Xander to take care Buffy. Oh yeah, and about this song thing, "Full of Grace," by Sarah McLachlan, for Xander's feelings for someone who barely acknowledges him (ie, Buffy)....in a romantic sense, that is. Well, I have now. Just a word of warning to those who are sick of hearing about ratings or hate statistics: you should probably move onto the next message now. First, there's a real problem in trying to separate out the effects on ratings of Angel turning bad and Buffy moving to its new Tuesday timeslot, paired with Dawson's Creek. That's because the two things happened at the same time and every new episode on a Tuesday so far has had the evil Angelus. With that said, I did a multiple regression analysis of Buffy's ratings (national and overnight/large market separately). I assumed that Buffy's ratings were a function of 3 factors: whether or not the episode was a repeat, whether it aired on a Monday or Tuesday and finally whether Angel was good or bad. I'll just summarize the results without getting technical. First, National ratings (each ratings point represents 980,000 households or 1 percent of the TV-equipped households in the US): "Baseline" or expected rating: 3.57 If it's a repeat: subtract 0.54 If it airs on a Tuesday: add 0.24 If Angel is evil: add 0.79 Percent of the variation in Buffy's ratings from week to week that can be explained by just these three factors: 65.15% Second, Overnight ratings (each ratings point represents 1 percent of the TV-equipped households in the 38 largest television markets in the US): "Baseline" or expected rating: 5.17 If it's a repeat: subtract 1.04 If it airs on a Tuesday: add 0.40 If Angel is evil: add 0.59 Percent of the variation in Buffy's ratings from week to week that can be explained by just these three factors: 65.49% So what this is saying is that even taking into account the move to Tuesday, the turning of Angel into the evil Angelus is related to further increased ratings. But again, we should be sceptical because of the paucity and type of data we have. Here's what's going on. The ratings for new episodes are higher since the switch to Tuesdays but the ratings for repeats on Tuesdays are not really higher overall and recently have been lower than Monday repeats. The new episodes on Tuesdays all featured the evil Angelus, the repeat episodes on Tuesday have all featured the good Angel. Hence it's not surprising that this statistical analysis attributes extra ratings to an evil Angelus above and beyond the simple move to Tuesdays. But maybe there's another reason - -- other than Angel's persona -- that new episodes are doing better since the switch and repeat episodes are doing worse since the switch. The simple explanation is that people are just losing interest in the show during this latest string of 6 or 7 repeats. What has always baffled me is the effect of the first 4 new episodes that aired on Tuesdays. In my opinion, 3 of those 4 shows were among Buffy's best and all 4 showed the wide range possible in Buffy. Innocence and Passion were two of the best of the serious, heart-wrenching type eps, BB&B was one of the best light-hearted humorous episodes and Phases was a treatment of one of the horror classics, the werewolf. Yet what was the effect of each one of these? They each caused fewer and fewer viewers to tune into the next new episode, both nationally and in the large TV markets. Are there any other obvious factors that would help account for the other 35% of variance? How about factoring in some fairly noncontroversial "perceived quality" coefficient for the previous week's episode? Most of us agree that Surprise/Innocence/Phases were great, Bad Eggs mediocre, for example. OTOH, based on your observation, maybe perceived quality actually *repulses* a broader audience.
