Subject: BUFFY: Go Fish can GO I'll admit that the writing for this episode had some bad points and some stuff that should've stayed on the writing table but it was nice to watch a new episode and it had its moments. New "one-liners", and some new aspects from Cordy and Willow were cool. Of course I'll admit that the preview for next week kicked this episode's butt! In the Anne Rice books, the vampire can neither cut his hair or nails, they grow back in the night. Too much up-keep. It hasn't been stated exactly on Buffy about the hair. I'm guessing it stays the way it's cut. It's like a half way thing. Vampires can have sex, get hit by bullets, get deathly ill, be jealous, change their hair. They can't have little vampires, feel remorse (unless cursed), be in sunlight, yada yada yada. You can have half of your cake, but not all the frosting. I love that transition! Anyway, overall, this was not one of the greats. I still think it was far better than KBD, simply because the monster costumes were SO much better. It seemed to me that he is there to cover up the evil events--and in a way is an inadvertent half-ally of Buffy--and his pro-swim team actions seemed out of character. Someone suggested that he did this to take everyone's mind off the strange occurrences, and this might be correct, but he did seem to know that the disappearances were linked to the Coach. Maybe it was because these events were not supernatural, so they did not fall under his job description as Principal/Conspirator/Observer. (I usually rate the episodes on how many times it made me jump, last week's was two jumps.) I agree with most people on this episode. Cordelia was great and I loved her little monologue to "fishy Xander". I didn't know she could draw. Did I miss something? And I thought that Angel was gonna turn Gage into a vampire to catch Buffy off guard when he said "I'm recruiting." And I thought the coach's explanation of what was happening at the end was really bizarre. I felt like I was watching an episode of The X Files and she was talking to Deep Throat. And yes, Angel was unecessary except for the steroid thing which they could have found out some other way. I loved the look on Buffy and Cordelia's face when Xander jumped in the pool. It wasn't art, but it was fun. Next week's will be great. I don't read spoilers and I thought maybe Becoming would be about transitions and growing and moving on "Buffy style". I had no idea it would be about Angel becoming a vampire. I can't wait. I know this is a personal preference thing and hard to debate but I loved Invisible Girl. In my mind, the scene in which Cordelia goes into the library and asks for Buffy and the gang's help is one of the classics. Cordy's firing off the insults and looking like she's just innocently telling the truth the whole time (Giles: "I don't believe I've ever seen you in here before." Cordy: "No, I have a life.") But Cordelia is my favorite supporting character by far so that affects my judgment of episodes I'm sure. The other reason I liked it is that overall, Invisible Girl fit into my favorite category of Buffy episode; a supernatural twist on some aspect of high school life -- here it was the popular kids (and everyone else actually) treating a less popular kid as though she doesn't exist. In short: An amusing diversion I came to "Go Fish" in exactly the same way I came to "Bad Eggs"--not expecting too much since we are about to have a pivotal, two part story starting next week. However, whereas I walked away from "Bad Eggs" feeling less than satisfied, I find that I got a lot more enjoyment out of "Go Fish." Not that it was perfect by any stretch of the imagination. But it was still an entertaining hour of Buffy and actually had me on the edge of my seat and interested in a way that certain other WB show that was trying to scare us last night couldn't quite achieve. (Not that I watch Dawson's Creek to be scared! I watch because, quite frankly, as cheesy as it can get, I'm hooked!) Before I go any further, I'd be remiss in not pointing out that this episode of Buffy felt a lot like an episode of the X-Files. In fact, it seems to have borrowed heavily from the classic, second season episode, "The Host," with a Russian experiment gone wrong that produces a monster that likes to live in water. Yes, Buffy has it's own spin but the similarities were blindngly obvious to me last night. It may have been helped by the fact that the incidental music seemed to come right out of the X-Files as well. I've got the Mark Snow soundtrack to the X-Files and I swear that several of last night's themes had been taken right off the CD and inserted into the show. It felt like the original Star Trek, where after a while you realized they were using some of the same musical tracks over and over again. It was distracting to me, but that may be because I'm such a big fan of the X-Files. But, I'm also a big Buffy fan, which is the reason we're all here. And I've got to admit that last night as the episode first started, I was prepared to be disappointed. After the whole scene on the beach when we see the monster shrouded in darkness, my thought was, "Great, another monster that likes to attach people for no good reason." I had flash backs of "Bad Eggs" or "Killed by Death." However, Joss and company quickly made me eat my words when it turns out the reason the monsters have targeted the Sunnydale swim team was the fact that they ARE the Sunnydale swim team. I liked that because it effectively put a new twist on the monster from the deep myth and it also gave a reasonable explanation of why nobody else at Sunnydale was attacked by the monsters. The fact that they're a genetic experiment of some type gone wrong was a nice little touch. It seemed vaguely X-Filish with that hint of some kind of larger conspiracy. But it did bring up some questions that really, really needed answers. Such as how the coach find out about this process? What exactly was the nurse's role on the this? And did Synder know what was going on? If, as were lead to believe, he knows about the Hellmouth and it's affects, why did he allow the experiments to go on, knowing what kind of havoc the Hellmouth could have on such experiments? It's little details like this that make a good episode a great one. Of course, Whedon and company throw in some nice red herrings long the way. From the original supsect, Jonathan (who had a wonderful interrogation scene with Willow. Once again, Alyson Hannigan delivers a superb, understated performance!) to the idea that it just be might be sterroids when Angel spits out the blood, it all kept me enough in the dark about the mystery to keep on guessing. However, upon a second look, there are clues there to let you know that the team is mutating into something else. You just have to know what you're looking for. And while the ending was rather uneventful, with the monsters swimming out to sea, opening the door for their return, the events leading up to it were rather nice. Of course, no episode of Buffy is complete without some nice moments from the regular cast. And they were all given a chance to shine here. (Well, except Giles who seemed strangely absent from the proceedings for some reason.) One of the more interesting moments was in the beginning, relating to how Buffy dresses and the signals that was sending. It was an interesting plot point, and to be quite honest, one I'd wish had been further developed. Not only from the standpoint of showing just because a girl dresses in a sexy manner doesn't give guys the right to think they are going to get to do whatever they want with her, but also to see more of Buffy's reaction to it. Her dismay at this was quickly swept under the carpet so we could get to the ugly monster of the week. Honestly, I think some members of the swim team were far more deadly monsters before they transformed into scaly creatures. That whole scene in the car really had some instensity to it, in much the same way the confrontations between Buffy and Ted had earlier this year. There was some tension to be mined here, espeically from Synder's view. But, alas, it was not to be. Another character development angle that has me worried is the Xander/Cordy relationship. I realize that aren't going to be so mushy and gooey all the time, but there were times this week and last week that I doubted they were even dating. It seemed like we'd had a retro moment to a time before they were together or that they'd broken up. I am not saying they should be making out every minute, but you'd think the barbs and jabs might have mellowed a bit. It takes a brush with death for Cordy to be really honest about how she feels about Xander. I didn't really go for that. I did, however, love the reaction scene to Xander in Speedos. That was probably one of the funnier sequences in the show, along with Cordy's reaction that she's dating a member of the swim team. Loved it. Also the fact that she tells Xander he can quite if he wants, as long as he plays football. I loved it. Absolutely in character for Cordy. So, overall, it was a pretty good episode. Not that I'm not expecting next week to be better. But for what it's worth, "Go Fish" kept me interested and whetted my appetite for "The Becoming." So, I guess that about wraps it up, except for a few small things... --Where is Oz? He'd have fit in well in this episode. Maybe it was his time on the month! :-) --Will we ever hear how the team did in the state finals? --Synder's apparent giddiness at the swim team's succes was nice. He must just be relived for Sunnydale to be in the paper for a positive reason for a change! --You could have pretty much left out the Angel scene and I wouldn't have cared. Buffy needs to just slay him and get it over with. He's pretty much beyond redemption for me at this point, even if he gets his soul back. --So, a sewer runs under Sunnydale High now? :-) Well, that about wraps it up for now. Overall, it could have been far worse. Of course, it could have been better. But I have a feeling Joss and compnay have saved the best for last.... I guess I have to chime in with those who found this episode pretty weak; I couldn't tell whether the whole thing was a joke or not. Especially the monologue the "evil swim coach" gives at the end... I mean, if he and the school nurse have the intellectual ability to find out about top secret ex-soviet projects to meld human and fish DNA, and to perfect (?) them, then what are they doing working at a high school? ( I know, I know, suspension of disbelief ... ) Second, I couldn't figure out why the show had to revolve around a "message" (don't use performance enhancing drugs, or else you'll turn into a ravenous ichthyoid sewer-dweller)... However, its always nice to see how, even with some pretty lame writing, a cast a strong as Buffy's can still make the show watchable. Kudos esp. to Nick and Charisma. While I won't argue with ANYone who wants to put forth that Go Fish was weak, I do want to point out a few high points that /aren't/ Cordelia or the good lines (though these /were/ high points) -- these upsides tie indirectly into the two points I quoted above. What I found most interesting about this episode was that we got a much better look at the school (and by 'school' I mean the kids, not the building) than we have in any of the more recent ep's. While I wasn't consciously aware of it, the show's focus has been going more inward, focusing more on the Scooby crew and the main Vamp Trio, and I thought it was very refreshing to have the focus shift to a wider view of Sunnydale again -- we get a look at how the students perceptions of Buffy and Company have slowly changed: People are still clueless, but they aren't AS clueless -- most, or at least some, folks know that weird things happen, and those that know that also seem to know that Buffy's usually around these weird things. Judging by Xander's comments, Buff's also probably tangled with the male-pig element at the school often enough that it doesn't blow her cover for him to mention it in a conversation with an outsider -- we also see in Angel's short conversation with the swimmer that Buffy has a rep as someone who kicks the butts of would-be Buffy-butt-kickers in the student body, which means the swimmer and friends can't really 'teach her a lesson' -- useful information all around. ===== One final note, regarding the quality of the ep: I liked the episode fine, by which I mean I wasn't disappointed by it -- the REASON I wasn't disappointed was because I didn't expect much -- both in conversations on the list and the previews for the ep itself, the BIGGEST draw for this episode seemed to be 'Xander in Speedo's' -- as a result, I wasn't expecting anything of real show-defining depth -- I was expecting an ep where one of the biggest scenes was Xander in speedo's, and that's what I got. If I'd been expecting 'Becoming' or 'Passion' and gotten 'Go Fish' I would have been sorely disappointed, sure, but that never happens. One thing about Joss, he never disappoints, as long as you don't expect 'Passion' every week. I've figured out that if I watch the previews, and base my expectation /solely/ off of what I see there (or read here), I will always be pleasantly surprised -- the show's always a little bit better than what I was expecting. Look at the previews they had for Killed by Death -- you can tell it's going to be weak -- but don't expect anything from that ep, and you still get the Ander/Angel confrontation -- lousy ep, redeeming scene. The reverse: if they really hype the show, I mean REALLY hype it -- it is without fail a jaw-dropping, heart-stopping event. Bottom line: I absolutely trust the show -- it doesn't always give a knock-out 'Surprise and Innocence' punch, but neither does it PROMISE that -- it has without fail come through on whatever it /promised/ for the coming ep -- until I'm actually disappointed by an ep versus the ep's hype, I'll keep leaping blindly headfirst into each Tuesday night. :) That's my unusually bright and shiny 2 cents for the week. - - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 May 1998 12:50:19 EDT From: Smellcore Subject: Re: Re: BUFFY: Sarah on Dawsons Creek In a message dated 5/6/98 3:25:38 PM, you wrote: <> The only way I would tune in for such a thing is if all the characters on DC turned into hideous beasts and we could watch Buffy slay them all slowly one by one. . . While I wasn't >consciously aware of it, the show's focus has been going more inward Thank you for saying in four lines what it probably would have taken me four paragraphs to say. This episode really reminded me of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer I got hooked on last year. I appreciate the need for growth and change and diversity in a series -- I've come to accept that the focus of the show is, for the most part, Buffy/Angel/Angelus -- and I do enjoy the Surprise/Innocence/Passion episodes. But Go Fish re-inforced for me the notion that this show can also still succeed as a bizarre, supernatural look at high school life. The writing -- especially of the one-line zingers -- seemed to be up to Buffy standards in my opinion, even with the fact that this was the first episode written by David Fury & Elin Hampton. >Bottom line: I absolutely trust the show -- it doesn't always give a >knock-out 'Surprise and Innocence' punch, but neither does it PROMISE >that Good point. I'm totally psyched about the season finale, partially because of the preview for it. But we're supposed to be psyched about a season finale -- it only happens once a year (or twice, I guess, since it's a two-parter). It's supposed to be a barn-burner. Judging from that trailer, we're going to see stuff, and have questions answered, that we've been debating and wondering about for months and months. Something like Go Fish can't be evaluated against that. But comparing it to other stand-alone episodes (say, The Witch, The Pack, Inca Mummy Girl), I think it fares well. As well as the whole atmosphere of the episode, the combination of Cordy's pool-side display of humanity and the whole "Those boys really love their coach" thing cinched it for me.
