I >mean, if he and the school nurse have the intellectual ability to find >out about top secret ex-soviet projects to meld human and fish DNA, I think this is maybe what hurt this episode the most. I think it is easier to let reality go on subjects like 'vampires' or 'demons', but when it deals with actual science its harder to believe. I felt the same way about 'Ted' that a robot built in the 50's could be beyond anything that is even being researched today. But, a sharper script and great performances saved it. And, conducting genetic alterations with steam, is wild enough; but experiments being conducted by someone who seem to have the IQ of a grapefruit is a little to far. Perhaps they could have made the coach also a science teacher; just something to give it more foundation. Another problem I think this episode had was the lack of a good villian upfront. It didn't have any strong performance from a villian such as John Ritter in 'Ted'. Also it wasn't intill the end we knew who the real villian was; it was also late into the show when we found out it was the swimmers who were changing. Which is fine if that builds suspense like in "Puppet Show', but this show didn't have that aspect to it. And, unlike 'SAR' or 'IMG' you didn't feel any empathy for the villian. None of the cast looked very upset that coach was fishfood or that the boys were in the running for the remake of 'The Incredible Mr. Limpett'. That being said, unlike some other comments I don't feel this episode was the worst ever; I believe that titles still belongs to 'Bad Eggs'. I think most of the central cast, and a few funny lines were able to turn it into a pretty likeable episode. >Second, I couldn't figure out why the show had to revolve around a >"message" That's standard procedure from Buffy, and the crew. More than one episode contained its own messages, some were gentle others were flat out. Right down to the villian vampires smoking on a regular basis. 'Go Fish' also had more than one message, besides the obvious of steroids, you had the evil of being over competitive; plus a small bit on sexual harrassament. I know we've already had it confirmed by The WB that Buffy would be on the fall schedule. But if I'm not mistaken, for the second season the original order was for 13 episodes and then sometime last fall The WB ordered another 9 to make a "full" season 22. Ms. Carpenter makes it sound as though she knows they've been picked up for a full season already. Although that's not surprising I guess. Despite all my carping about ratings, Buffy is still near the top of The WB pack, it gets the most (?) critical praise, and probably the second most (?) publicity of The WB programs. So I can't see it going away any time soon. As for why I worry about ratings, this is really the first time I've been a fan of show that's got one of those small, cult audiences. (At least I think that Buffy's audience still qualifies as small and cult.) Before I joined this mailing list, I had never heard of Babylon 5 or Highlander, and I've never watched those two Star Trek shows that are now out there; my tastes are sort of mainstream, i.e. Law & Order, NYPD Blue, Party of Five.
