But the Incas, who held forth among the Andes Mountains of Peru, Bolivia and Chile, were not among them. The IMG's native language would not have been Spanish or "Aztec", but Quechua, I think. My "maximum girlfriend" speaks Spanish, English, French and Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs. I'm a little humbled by that. I can just get by in a single language, guess which one. The writers for BtVS work on a tight schedule and I suspect that they scooped the name out of a recent National Geographic magazine article. This article featured the "Ampato" mummy, so-called because it was discovered near the village of Ampato, Chile. The writers, I suspect, simply feminized "Ampato" and came up with "Ampata". I must say that I do not recall even whether or not the mummy was female, but a check of the article would answer that, if you're that interested. - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Jul 1998 09:34:55 -0400 (EDT) From: Michael Hickerson Subject: BUFFY: Review--Invisible Girl Warning: If you'd rather keep SPOILER information out of sight, out of mind, turn back now. There are major SPOILERS just ahead and no amount of ignoring them will make them invisible. In short: Hit and miss. In some ways, it's hard to sum up exactly how I feel about Invisible Girl. Namely because on paper it sounds exactly like the type of thing Buffy does best--take an established horror myth and give it a new and interesting spin. And the fact that Marcie disappeared precisely because nobody ever saw her when she was visible was certainly an interesting idea. However, like many episodes of Sliders, I found myself coming away from the episode thinking, "Great idea but not as well executed as it could have been." I guess I was just expecting a bit more. Part of it may be that last week's Monday showing of Nightmares was so darn good. And knowing that Tuesday night we'd see the instant classic School Hard again. Couple with it my own excitement at finally being able to see Prophecy Girl next week and it's easy to see Invsible Girl as an episode that's content to circle the runway as we get ready for the really big stuff that's coming. (And there are hints of it here!) But, that would be an injustice to the show because I'd overlook some of the best character development we've seen Cordy given up to this point. For the first time in the first season, Cordy goes beyond being the shallow, self-serving witch we've come to know and love. Indeed, at first, it was very hard for me to find any redeeming quality to Cordy, but in the light in Invisible Girl, it's nice to see that she actually does have a human side underneath her bluster and insults. The scenes with Buffy as they discussed how hard Cordy works to be popular while it doesn't seem to bring her the happiness she thinks it should were extremely well done. Cordy was shown as glaring opposites in the story--mainly by the flashbacks. Her plotting to steal her new boyfriend as well as stealing Marcie's comment about the toupee looking like cabbage show her in an all around negative light. (Part of this is probably due to the fact that these are flashbacks from Marcie's perspective and thus would portray Cordy as less than ideal, but a portion of them do show how cold Cordy can be). Coupled with the scenes with Buffy, we see a new side of Cordy and that her ego is a front. I think we saw the real Cordy in the moments when she's the most scared--both in the closet changing and at the Bronze. (And does anyone else find it ironic that she would change clothes in the janitor's closet, where she will later spend long periods of time making out with Xander? Just a little aside!) Charisa Carpenter gives Cordy a new level of depth, that quite frankly at this point Cordy needs. Yes, we saw her great fears last week of bad hair days and chess club, but I think this week we saw a greater fear--that someone would find a chink in her armor and determine she's not all she pretends to be. Or becoming like Marcy--unseen. So, if I were to quickly dismiss the story as filler material until Prophecy Girl, it'd be easy to overlook that plotline and some major growth. But, when it all came down to it, the plot of a girl who turns invisible had so much more potential than it eventually turned out to deliver. I'm not sure what I expected really, but I was hoping for a bit more than we got here. I think part of it was that in the last twenty or so minutes that the plot descended into a ton of cliches instead of rising above them as Buffy usually does. Buffy is separated from the Scooby gang, knocked out, and threatened. I think there were some major, major plotholes in the final few moments, a few of which really bugged me. One was that Angel served absolutely no purpose to this episode. It seemed as though they just threw him in at the last moment in order to have foreshadowing for next week and because they couldn't think of anyone else to get the Scooby gang out of the gas filled basement. The explanation of "Oh, I just happened to come by as you're desprate for my help," just really didn't hold water for me. Not that Angel can't be a savior, but I think having it be less cliched would have worked. Add to that the internal illogic in the final minutes. Somehow Marcie is able to virutally simulataneously lock Giles, Xander, and Willow in the basement, then haul it up to the bandroom, get into the duct work, and kidnap Cordy. Did she also gain super speed along with her invisibility? Because that's pretty much the best explanation I can come up with when it comes to this part of the plot? Finally, why take Buffy with her? OK< I know it's the standard evil villain clichhe to knock out the hero and then tie him/her up and explain the entire diabolical plan to him/her, but surely Marcie had more sense than that. She's had all this time to come up with her revenge plan against Cordy and she wants it to go perfectly. But yet, she takes Buffy along, knowing that Buffy regularily slays vamps and such. (Marcies tells us as much with her dialogue). So, why take Buffy who could, quite obviously, foil your plans easily? It doesn't make much sense. So, while the idea was good, the Cordy development even better, the entire episode was a let down. I'm not disguisted, just disappointed. Well, that about wraps it up except for a few small things.... --Did anyone else think that Marcie's plan to disfigure Cordy was similar to what Wesley wanted to do the Count in the Princess Bride? I found that an amusing little nod. --Dialogue to rewind for: Cordy's interpretation of Shylock's speech was great! --Dialogue to fast foward past: "It's not like I need the oxygen." Ugh! --Is this the first time we've seen Principal Snyder or does he appear in the Puppet Show? I was just wondering. Well, that's about it for now. All in all, it was a great concept on paper that never really went over that well on screen. I am willing to give a few extra points for Cordy's character development, though. Word has it that actress Charisma Carpenter, who plays vain Cordelia on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," attends a Catholic church every Sunday in Beverly Hills. Could it be all her assistance in vampire slaying that sends her to church for absolution? Or is it protection against the dark forces? It talks about two other corpses on the mountain as well. The girl found was called Juanita not Ampato (that was the name of the mountain) Slayer01 ............ RETURN OF THE ICE MAIDEN Scientists find an Inca girl frozen for 500 years CHRISTINE GORMAN AT JUST ABOUT THE TIME COLUMBUS was sailing into the Caribbean, a young Inca girl, almost a woman, was trudging up the steep slopes of Mount Ampato (elev. 20,700 ft.), in what is now southern Peru, knowing that her life would come to an end at the summit. Her sacrifice, considered the greatest honor her people could bestow, would appease the mountain god--the source of good fortune (in the form of rain to bless the crops) and terror (snowstorms, earthquakes and avalanches) to Inca culture. Did she march bravely to the center of the ceremonial platform, or was she dragged there in a drugged stupor? Was she killed by the priests who brought her, or was she left to die from exposure, cold and very alone? Those questions and more may soon be answered. Five hundred years after her fateful climb, the Inca maiden has returned to the world below the clouds. Her frozen body, along with those of two other youths, was discovered almost by accident last month by anthropologist Johan Reinhard and his Peruvian guide Miguel Zarate. Her tissues and bodily fluids were still intact. Researchers have found the mummified corpses of other Incas who were sacrificed, and four years ago, the freeze-dried remains of a 5,000-year-old man turned up in the Tyrolean Alps. But none were nearly as well preserved as the woman who has been dubbed Juanita by the people who found her. Juanita might have rested undisturbed for centuries more had it not been for the rumblings of a nearby volcano. For the past five years it has spewed ash over Mount Ampato, melting its snowcap and causing the ground to shift. The movement caused Juanita's ceremonial platform to collapse, and she literally tumbled off. Zarate had to rappel down a ravine to retrieve gold and silver statues, festooned with feathers, that were part of the traditional offering to the gods. Reinhard had scaled dozens of Andean peaks over the past 15 years searching for just such a treasure. Now he was worried that further underground movement on Mount Ampato might propel Juanita down the ravine, where she would be lost forever. "I couldn't just leave," Reinhard says. "I had it in my power to preserve a mummy and some beautiful statues that were about to fall." So Reinhard and Zarate stuffed the 90-lb. corpse, curled in its fetal position, into a backpack and climbed down after sunset. Eventually they were able to load Juanita onto the back of a mule, her body wrapped in blue foam sleeping pads to insulate it from the animal's body heat. She made the final leg of the trip to the city of Arequipa in the baggage hold of an overnight bus. A second expedition recovered the other two bodies. The humans sacrificed to the mountain god may prove to be a godsend to scientists. Archaeologists and anthropologists are thrilled because Juanita was found at a site that had not been looted; with all the ritual elements in place, they can reconstruct the ceremony and better understand its religious significance. Other experts are more interested in those body fluids. With support from the National Geographic Society, scientists in Arequipa, where the bodies are being kept, are preparing to make a detailed examination of Juanita's blood, her tissues and her DNA to determine, among other things, what virus and germs may have been common five centuries ago. - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Jul 1998 10:18:01 -0700 From: "Slayer01" Subject: BUFFY: Spike or Angel, Angel or Spike, Spike or Angel, Angel or Spike............ Sometimes they're little, subtle moments. Sometimes... they're not. I'll show you what I mean." Even though he was talking about being made into a vampire he does have a point. It does set the course of who you are going to be and nothing can change that. Also what Whistler says at the end has a point. Bottom line is, even if you seem 'em coming, you're not ready for the big moments. No one asks for their life to change, not really. But it does. So what, are we helpless? Puppets? No. The big moments are gonna come. You can't help that. It's what you do afterwards that counts. That's when you find out who you are. I think he also has a point in the way that things are going to happen and you can't change that but you can do something about it afterwards. Angel didn't have to chose to live, he could have ended his life knowing that he was a threat to all humanity while he had a demon inside him. Jezika said that you are stuck with it, true but this doesn't mean you are stuck , there is always something else you can do. There is always another option or another solution. Yes the problems were easily created and not easily cured but that doesn't mean the person has to change. I think that no matter what happens to you (whether you become invisible or a vampire) you can still stay the same as before. It is all up to you how you react to someone or something. Executives from the WB feel that one of the two newest network will perish; those at UPN feel the marketplace can sustain both new ventures. It's not hard to figure out which of the two has taken the lead in the ratings race. Representatives of the two broadcasters met with the press over the weekend as the Television Critics Association's summer press tour wrapped up. Chief executive officer Jamie Kellner and Entertainment division president Garth Ancier of the WB spoke about the need to target a specific audience while their UPN counterparts considered that a tragic mistake. "The future of our business is going to be very targeted," said Kellner, whose network is ahead of its fellow fledgling competitor both creatively and ratings-wise. "All the networks will eventually select certain targets and try to attack those targets and be very specific toward those groups of people." The WB has been extremely successful with shows for its young audience, such as "Dawson's Creek" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and will add more shows for that crowd this fall. It's most anticipated series is the good-looking "Felicity," which has been described as "`Ally McBeal' goes to college"; "Charmed," which reunites producer Aaron Spelling and Shannen Doherty, who will play a witch; and "Hyperion Bay," starring former "Saved by the Bell" heartthrob Mark-Paul Gosselaar. UPN president and CEO Dean Valentine, who wants to program for viewers who don't live in Manhattan or West Los Angeles, has added the broad comedy "The Secret World of Desmond Pfeiffer"; "DiResta," about a New York City transit cop; "Guys Like Us," which is two men and a little kid; the post-Civil War period piece "Legacy"; and "Mercy Point" ("ER" in space). "We're trying to reach adult, middle-class Americans," Valentine said. The address to post messages to the list is BUFFY@LISTS.XMISSION.COM. Please SAVE this message-- it contains information on how to uns*bscribe from the list or to change s*bscription options. The buffy FAQ can be found at http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Cavern/1763/buffyfaq.html. Please check it out ASAP--Cagey has done a wonderful job with it and it will answer a bunch of your questions about the show and fandom. PLEASE READ THE FAQ before posting questions to the list-- many common questions are covered there. Because we want this list to be a great place to talk about "Buffy," we are setting up a few ground rules. If you've ever been involved in a discussion list, many of these rules will look familiar. Hopefully, they'll make list life more interesting (and more fun) for everyone. Please note: we enforce these rules. This is an extremely high- volume list, and we want to make sure that the volume is relevant to the show. 1. Keep posts on topic. Topics should be related to Buffy the series, Buffy the movie, the actors involved in either project, etc.. Discussion of vampires in other universes is fine as long as they're being discussed in relation to the Buffy universe. 2. Please be careful with the use of strong imagery or language in consideration of younger list members. Think "rated PG." Also, no masking (replacing one letter of a potentially offensive word with an asterisk). 3. No advertising of non-Buffy related items or services. If you want to post information about Buffy-related merchandise, conventions, etc., clear it through one of us first. Also, no attachments, or binary files of any sort (including images, wavs, MOVs, etc). 4. Please don't post fiction to this list. There is a separate Buffy fiction list (subscription info below). 5. If you get advance information on a new episode, or see an episode earlier than the national viewing time, and you want to post about it, YOU MUST do the following: **Mark the post as a "spoiler" in the subject header. **DO NOT give away the spoiler in the subject header--be vague! **Leave about twelve lines at the top of the post. Don't leave them blank or with periods/dashes-- some mailers think the message is over and will cut it off. Use non-spoiler info or do something like this: s p o i l e r For the required number of lines, of course. This ensures that anyone who doesn't like knowing about an episode ahead of time is "protected." :) The blank space is for people whose mailers automatically open up the next piece of mail, without giving them a chance to see "spoiler" in the header. Spoiler warnings are not necessary after the start of the episode's national viewing time, which is currently set at 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Eastern Standard Time. Spoiler warnings are not necessary for reruns. Additional spoiler info: Once a promotional "trailer" has aired at the end of an episode, the information in that trailer does need to be spoiler protected, even if it contains advance information that has been under spoiler protection previously. The general rule is: if it has AIRED, it doesn't need spoiler protection. Episode information of ANY kind from TV Guide or local TV listings MUST be spoiler protected until the episode airs, unless it's exactly what has appeared in an aired promotional trailer. TV Guide info is often very, very specific, and this is the kind of spoiler info some people just don't want to know ahead of time. 6. Most importantly, there will be ABSOLUTELY NO FLAMING ONLIST. We have absolutely zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour. Flames can kill a list, permanently damage relationships, and make life a lot less fun for everyone. Broadly defined, a flame is a personally derogatory, inflammatory comment about another list member, their progenitors, or about any of the actors, writers, directors, producers or crew of "Buffy." Disagreements-- even heated ones-- are expected. But the minute you start slamming someone personally, you will face the Wrath of Jill and Sharon. First offense: offender is uns*bscribed for one week. Second offense: offender is uns*bscribed to the Buffy list for a minimum of three months. If the offender returns and flames again, they're offlist permanently. And no, it doesn't matter that the actors, writers, etc. from "Buffy" aren't onlist; we won't put up with anyone flaming them anyway. Determination of what is (and what is not) a flame is made by the listowners, and their decisions are final. Determinations of any penalties associated with flames are also made by the listowners, and their decisions are final. 7. Related to #6, the listowners reserve the right to "kill" any discussion threads which either of the listowners deem offensive, or which appear to be degenerating into a flame war. If either one of us declares a topic "dead," it's dead. Anyone who continues the discussion thread, against our express wishes, will be immediately uns*bscribed for one week. 8. Please limit quotes of a previous post to four lines maximum per point you are responding to. Buffy is a high traffic list, and we're asking s*bscribers to be mindful of wasted bandwidth when they respond to posts. For example, here's an original quote: >I just love Buuffy the Vampire Slayer. It's my favorite show, and about the only thing I watch on television anymore. I look forward to each and every episode. DOes anyone know hot to write to the stars of the show, or where to write to show our support? Willow is my favorite character, but I like Buffy a lot to. And Giles! Woo hoo! I recognize him from VR5.< If you want to ansewr this person's questions about where to write, there's no need to include the extra stuff, so your response should look like this: >Does >anyone know how to write to the stars of the show, or where to write >to show our support? You can even clean it up further and put it onto two lines, but you get the picture. Only include the relevant stuff in your response, so that people get what you're talking about. Penalties: First offense: Offlist warning (clearly marked WARNING: Overquoting). Second offense: Removal from the list for one week. 9. Please limit your .sig to 6 lines maximum, but do include your name and email address at the bottom of each post so someone can respond to you privately if they want to. Penalties for not following this rule are the same as for #8. 10. Do NOT post personal information, or requests for personal information, about the cast, crew, etc. of "Buffy" to this list. Personal information includes (but is not limited to) home address, telephone number, email address (unless the individual gives it out freely), etc. It's certainly fine to discuss who's dating whom, or how tall someone is, or things like that. But anything that could constitute an invasion of personal privacy (or could potentially be some type of threat to any individual) is strictly forbidden on this list. The penalty for this is ONE warning-- ONE. If it happens again, that person is permanently uns*bscribed from this list. If you have any question over what you're posting, and whether it violates this rule, please email either one of us. 11. And last, but not least, we reserve the right to deny subscription (new, renewed, or continued) to the list for any individual(s). IF YOU'RE S*BSCRIBED TO THE REGULAR BUFFY LIST AND WISH TO CHANGE TO DIGEST: You need to uns*bscribe from the Buffy list, and res*bscribe to the digest. Send a message to majordomo@lists.xmission.com In the body of the message, put uns*bscribe buffy Then, send a second message to majordomo@lists.xmission.com In the body of the message, put s*bscribe buffy-digest You'll go through the same approval process that you got when you subbed to the regular Buffy list. If you're s*bscribed to the digest version, and want to change to regular mail, do the opposite-- unsub from buffy-digest, and resub to buffy. THE BUFFY FICTION LIST To s*bscribe to the Buffy Fiction list, follow the same procedures as listed above-- just substitute buffyfic or buffyfic-digest for buffy or buffy-digest.
