"I was just going over my first 22 pages of dialogue last night. I'm enjoying that," Brereton admits. "It's cool to come up for a story that I don't have to draw. The people at Fox has really tight rein over what they want. In fact, they passed over me when I asked to do the covers. Then I was really surprised when they approved me as a writer for the series and actually, they are more flexible about what you can write and can't. "I've actually introduced a character, Giles the Watcher's niece," he adds. "She's an adventurer, an archeologist who's studied at Oxford and travelled around the world. She stops to visit her favorite uncle in Sunnyvale and helps getting Buffy into a world of trouble." Set to ship this October, the graphic novel's called The Dust Waltz. From the sounds of it, Brereton's having a party writing it. From the sounds of things, he's glad that he's not doing the art, too. "What was cool was I wasn't sure that Fox would let me give Giles a niece," he says. "What's funny, is unlike the art, they're not so retentive that they won't stop him from having a niece. What's really cool is she now has become part of their plan. I think they got what I was trying to do with it. I never worked on a book before where that was the case." "I'm working on what's going to be a 60-page graphic novel, something like that. I'm hoping to do another one. I'm also working on a 2-part miniseries that was plotted by Andi Watson. It's a slumber-party story. I'm having fun." "I understand they've talked to the cast and they're a bit jealous because we get to do things they can't do on television, like take on ten foot tall monsters from Hell. It's something they don't have the budget for. I mean we just think it up and draw it. But I'd trade my job with their's any day. To work on a TV show would be so cool. I'd love to work on an episode," he confesses.>> I hope the reference to SunnyVale was a misprint in the interview and he knows enough about the series to know it's actually SunnyDale. - -- Evan 'Azure' Harris azure99@ozemail.com.au Buffy: It's so weird... It's a great episode > but I really enjoyed "Some Assembly Required" (which gets a LOT of > bad-mouthing on this list) much more. Anyone else agree? I think Some Assembly Required had a lot of really good ideas in there desparately screaming to get out. As I said in my season two wrap-up (archived along with reviews of both eps at www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Theater/4507) when I watched the first act of SAR, I kept asking myself why I was so down on this episode. The first half is quite well done--from Cordy's attempts to curry Angel's favor to the gang trying to figure out just why girl's bodies are being stolen. But once we actually see the monster on screen and once the gang begins to track down the monster, it all falls apart. Part of it is unrealized potential. Why did the brother feel so compelled to reanimate his brother in the first place? Also, I saw maybe a really good angle developing with the mother being totally obsessed with her dead son that maybe the living one re-animated him to get her favor. Nothing ever comes of it. The mother who could have and maybe should have been a vital element to the episode is just there to watch videos of her son's greatest moments and it never comes to any kind of interesting point. Basically it all ends with Buffy saving the day (tm) and a cliched, pointless villain. It is like a lot of episodes of Sliders--good idea, just not as well executed as I'd hoped it would be. On the other hand, School Hard is a wonderfully done story that not only hits all the right notes with the characters but also manages to introduce Spike and Dru and tell one compelling story while there. Sunnydale under seige is taut and rivetting and easily watchable. Also, School Hard sets into motion the arc for season two by bringing Spike and Dru into the picture and moving the storyline forward. But it can and does stand on it's own as a great hour of television. And the A plot the the B plot come to together perfectly when Spike invades the high school to try and kill Buffy. Basically, School Hard takes a great concept and takes those extra steps to push it over the top from good episode to classic episode IMHO. Actually, they're not. Nightmares is seaosn one and involves Buffy spending time at the hospital to visit the girl who has been attacked by the monster and trying to convince the boy in the coma to wake-up. Killed by Death is the one where Buffy is sick and in the hospital, taking on the Freddy Krueger look-alike. Oh, and Nightmares is the good one.... > The conversations between > Buffy and Xander and the conversation between Xander and Cordy made it > for me. Seeing Xander's concern for Buffy, lifted Nicholas Brandon high > in my list of good actors. Those are just some thoughts from me. The Angel/Xander confrontation in the hall is the only thing that saves this story from being rate 0.0 out of 10.0 for me. Other than that, it's dull, tedious, pointless, and everyone is so out of character that it's almost embarassing to watch. Overall the biggest disappointment in a Buffy episode I've seen. I can understand that. I'm personally hot for Cordelia, so any episode that is remotely Cordy-centric is more likely to be well-received by me. Much like The Shadow, Charisma Carpenter has the ability to cloud men's minds. At least this man's mind. Charles Summers wrote: > Not me. NAR's plot was silly and uninteresting, and despite a > few good wisecracks was pretty much just a filler ep. I've got to admit I've never liked the term "filler ep" (maybe in a previous life I was a harried Exxon service station attendant). It makes it sound as though the overall plotline of Buffy is its major drawing card and I've never thought that was the case. I wish I could remember which one, but on one Buffy website I read a good description of Buffy as a roller coaster ride show, meaning that the thrill is not arriving at the end, but instead the twists and turns along the way. Wherever it was, they said it better. That having been said, I still didn't find the actual plot of Some Assembly Required to be bad at all, although it really was the one-liners and the little things -- Xander, Willow and Cordy at the end, many others -- that I liked best. I do agree with Michael Hickerson that they missed out on a plot opportunity though. I also thought they might delve deeper into the idea that Chris' real goal in bringing back Darryl was to please his mother. It seemed like the perfect chance to carry a "normal" family problem to a supernatural extreme -- what better way to earn some brownie points with Mom than actually bringing your dead brother back to life. Of course, she might have ignored Chris even more if she knew Darryl was actually alive. > Of course, even a lame Buffy is better than most other shows... I can agree with that. I don't think that after watching any Buffy episode I've thought to myself, "Hey, I'm now one hour closer to my time of death and I've got nothing to show for it." I've only really disliked one episode and that's I Only Have Eyes For You. Maybe I disliked it because it made me feel like one of those right-wing religious types that rail against the evil messages in today's television shows. But I was not a fan of the way the episode treated a manslaughter and a suicide as an opportunity for Buffy to grow as a person, or the fact that the person responsible for the manslaughter and suicide is forgiven by the person he killed and his spirit now gets to rest in peace. Grace's forgiveness speech left me with a bad taste in my mouth -- I didn't think we needed to see her blame herself for what happened. And on a more superficial level, I'm still irked by the way this episode was promoted; the way it appeared in the ads as if Buffy and Angel were going to reunite.
