Hi everyone: This is one of the most interesting threads I've seen about Dawson's Creek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Any tv series tries to create a reality of its own. Both Dawson's Creek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer succeed in doing this although both use a different style of dialogue. Dawson's Creek uses a very mature dialogue. Actually, the dialogue spoken by Jen, Dawson, Joey, etc. is the kind of words and phrasings you'd find 30 year olds using...educated 30 year olds who like to make speeches and intellectualize. On Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you have a more witty, concise style. The dialogue on Buffy sounds more natural than Dawson's because I believe the writing is superior. Yup! That's my opinion. Lets face it, even though the witticisms and one-liners spoken by Buffy, Cordelia, Xander and company sound natural, if you really analyze it, no 16 year old would really speak like them either. The writing is just so good it sounds natural. And when writing reaches that level it is more than just good it wins Emmys, or it will, one day...just watch and see. funee _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. You've got... dog racing, Manchester United. And you've got people. Billions of people walking around like Happy Meals with legs. It's all right here. But then someone comes along with a vision. Buffy: They say how he's gonna kill me? Do you think it'll hurt? Buffy: Don't touch me! Were you even gonna tell me? Giles: I was hoping that I wouldn't have to. That there was... some way around it. I... Buffy: I've got a way around it. I quit! Angel: It's not that simple. Buffy: I'm making it that simple! I quit! The original movie tanked big time although it is considered an "underground" classic. It can be found most often than not in the section of the video store where the rest of the "drive in" classics are found. As to wether or not a movie would follow the last one or the series, Joss Whedon has made it clear that he is not following the original movie at all. This is backed up by the rewriting of Buffy history in the final episode. If and when a movie comes out, In my opinion, it will based off of the TV show and current trends and subjects being dealt with therin. As for the Williamson thing...and this is not gonna go over well...He understands kids very well but chooses not to portray them as kids. I watch Dawson's Creek. The characters are fun and interesting but in no way are they 15 - 16 year olds. I don't know about anyone else but I have younger siblings and they possess half a brain and act nowhere near like the "kids" on Dawson's Creek. I think Williamson is simply the hot new flavor for Hollywood and the horror genre and he will run his course just like his predecessor, Wes Craven. The writing is just so good it sounds natural. Gotta jump in on this thread. I have to agree that what Buffy, Cordelia, and the gang say isn't really how teenagers speak. But the writers and actors manage to convince you that it *is* how teenagers talk, and that's why, IMO, it works. I actually watched part of an episode of DC the other night. Pacey turns to Dawson and says something like "I'm not cursed with self-awareness like you are Dawson, but..." It made me laugh, it sounded so silly and pretentious, especially coming from the mouth of a 16 or 17 year old boy who just got it on with his english teacher! In terms of dialogue, then, I'd have to agree that BTVS easily outdistances DC. I can see the BTVS/DC spoof on SNL now (don't you just love all those abbreviations): Dawson: It's really a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Xander(aside): Eight words when a simple "Hi!" would do! Dawson: These incidents with undead creatures that have been plaguing the town, can you tell me more? I'm considering a documentary for my film class. Buffy: What's to tell? I came, I saw, I slayed. End of story. Dawson: I must say, I admire your parsimony. Xander: That's our Buffy. Right to the point. This should, of course, be taken with a grain of salt, since I watch the ultra-sappy 7th Heaven on a fairly regular basis, so no offense to you DC lovers out there. I think it would make an amusing little skit. - --sah - -- sah * romana@mindspring.com * romana@aol.com NatPack * BotCoS * Jungle Patrol * BBPGrrl:TGLIL * Bishop * BTVS Listowner Nat's B&B: http://free.prohosting.com/~romana/natpack/html My homepage: http://free.prohosting.com/~romana/index.html "Armageddon might be thirty seconds after some guy puts his hand down my shirt." --Jill Kirby - - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Aug 1998 14:35:03 +0000 From: Jack Welsh Subject: BUFFY: Entertainment Weekly / H20 I know that everyone here is sick of=A0hearing that SMG is sort-of in=20 H20 but I just wanted to relay what's said about her in Entertainment=20 Weekly. People argued whether or not they were realistic. Dialogue, ideas, etc. Now we ar doing the same with television. When Jules Verne came with the idea of people going to the moon, critics told him he was being unrealistic and stupid. Now on to the present. Who are we to say that Vampires do not exist?? That there is a Slayer. Who are we to say certain people study their butts off and use high vocabulary?? Who are we to say that 5 girls came from outer space to save the world??? It is true that you would most likely find a group of teens talking, walking, and acting exactly like Buffy, Willow, and Xander. But it is also very likely that if you were to walk into a small town, you would find a group of teens with high vocabulary with the hope of getting out of there. IMHO anyway. I think that a lot of the show's realism and charm is derived from its characters, because no group of people is completely polarized between a textbook set of stereotypes, and BTVS totally understands that. It wasn't easy to choose just five but here goes: 1. "Gosh, I'd love to take the kids trick-or treating, but I recently developed carpal tunnel syndrome and can tragically no longer hold a flashlight." Buffy (Halloween) 2. "It's a big rock. Can't wait to tell all my friends. They don't have a rock this big." Spike (Becoming) 3. "So I'm wonderin', do the other cookie animals feel sorta ripped? Like the hippo's goin, 'Hey man, where are MY pants? I have my hippo dignity.' And you know the monkey's just 'I mock you with my monkey pants!' And then there's a big coup in the zoo." Oz (What's My Line 2) - -This scene was sooo sweet! I love the way he "woo-ed" her with those animal crackers 4. "I'm gonna do something manly anbout it... something damn manly!" Xander (I sorta forgot which episode this one's from) 5. "You see that? He tried to bite me... What a sissy!" Owen (Never Kill A Boy On The First Date) -I can just imagine someone saying this in real life if some guy tried to bite him on the neck! =) That's all! - -jd - - ------------------------------ End of buffy-digest V2 #413 *************************** To subscribe to buffy or buffy-digest, send the command subscribe buffy-digest or subscribe buffy to majordomo@xmission.com.
