After a LONG summer of reruns I couldn't wait for a new episode. I knew, or thought, that it would be great. I was wrong. This took a whole summer to write? When I compare the episodes, Anne will go down with Killed By Death. The problem with this episode is that it was written wrong. In my opinion, the story should have had Buffy going to hell to search for Angel. Once she realizes that she HAD to kill him, she could return home. I just can't believe how bad this episode was. Admittedly, "Anne" is not Joss' shining moment. Maybe he's just following some weird pattern of writing off-base season openers? (You must admit, much as "Welcome to the Hellmouth" set the tone for the series, it was off-base in comparison to the world at large. And "When She Was Bad"? Aww... ) My main concern is *what* were Ken and Co. (sounds a Barbie franchise) doing? We know people were smelting, metal working, and other hellish- type things, but we never found out what their actual purpose was. Now if even if this is going to be a continuing plot line, which it seems to be, even a *little* hint would've been nice. Was anyone else tapping their foot and checking their watch during the Angel/Buffy dream? Maybe it's 'cause that one scene has been played in the promos so often (the words "love of an immortal" now send me into a fit of speaking in tongues). Still, the Sunnydale scenes were especially nice (not great, mind you). It's good to see not everyone is happy-happy-joy-joy. One wonders just what Joyce is going to do if (sorry, when!) Buffy resumes her Sacred Duty Passed Down From On High. Oz was oddly...not there very much. Now that Seth Green's a regular, I suspect the poor boy will be making many the token appearance like David Boreanaz did ("Ted" and "Go Fish" are excellent examples of this), rather than actually being much of a person. Don't get me wrong, I like Oz. But you really do have to wonder how he's going to fit in a dynamic that's already molded and cast. Who knows? Maybe Joss broke the crucible to make a new one. Hope so. Oddly, I was kinda hoping to see Buffy's return to Sunnydale stretched out over an episode or two. Y'know, see a little more of both parties coping without the other. Instead, Joss compresses what must have been a week at the so very least (Buffy obviously wasn't rolling in the dough) into one scene cut. "Is sighing hacking coughing sadness, Sgloomi is." Let me share a fear with y'all: that this is the beginning of the end. The of Angel in some future episode may breathe a new wind, but I can't help but wonder if maybe "Buffy" isn't becoming just a natz bogged down in angst. I was laughing my brains out. 'S called "character development," yeah? Lily starts off timid 'n' such. Then she meets Buffy, all brash and pushy. An example to learn from, maybe. The girl gets pulled along by everyone and ends up in the non-literal but just as bad Hell. And all the while she's being all meek and cowed, Buffy's still standing, still fighting. Finally, Lily has to make a choice: step forward, do the deed, and escape to life above, or: submit, do nothing, and die a nobody. She takes a page from Buffy's book and *does* something.
