I asked my mythology teacher about it (w/o actually mentioning Buffy), and she explained. Anyone ever heard of the Electra Complex? It refers to someone who has an "unusually" close relationship with her father, if you know what I mean. Electra herself never actually had any romantic relationship with her father (though I wouldn't be surprised considering how perverse everyone in mythology is), but she was extremely dedicated to her father, and that's how it developed into the Electra Complex. But I don't see how that applies to Buffy and Giles AT ALL. Yes, she's dedicated to him, but not to the extent that Electra was dedicated to her father, and CERTAINLY not to the extent of the Electra Complex. That's rather gross. Care to explain any further? BTW, when I responded to this before, I had my info wrong. Electra is the oldest, and her brother's name was Orestes. It is overwhelmingly obvious that Xander feels emascualted because of Buffy; hell, in this story it's really spelled out in words of one syllable. I don't think Willow is disempowered as much as you make out, though. No, she can't be research girl. But, she *takes charge* like nobody's business when the situation first develops. Xander, though he is suddenly very capable and powerful, does not understand the situation and is liable to make mistakes. (BTW, I think he was only talking baby talk in kind of sarcastic-Xander fashion; he didn't seem mentally reduced to me.) Buffy is useless, and Cordy, though she is reasonably competent, has no idea how to save the day. Willow does, and she even provides the clue that puts Giles on Ethan's track. Here I am to announce the question for the Buffy "Bite Me!" contest. The winners who answer the question correctly will win a copy of the new book, "Bite Me! PLEASE read them carefully: 1. The rules have changed slightly: the contest begins as soon as you see this question. If you know the answer, email it to me right away at robjen1@netrover.com with your COMPLETE address and name, including street, city, state/province, country, zip/postal code. Please put BUFFY CONTEST in your subject header so I know which ones are entries. 2. The contest closes November 2nd at 11pm EST. Any entries after that time will be disqualified. 3. Please enter only ONCE. Not once a day, once only. If you enter more than once you will be automatically disqualified (it's not me, it's the program the names get entered into). 4. The names of the 10 winners will be announced on November 6th, 1998. I will send those names to the individuals, as well as to all the lists. You will receive your books in the mail. 5. Everyone who doesn't win will still receive an offer to buy the book at a 30% discount, so it's worth it to enter just for that reason. 6. Please pass on the question to other mailing lists (please get the permission of the listowners first) and/or other Buffy fans you may know. I hope that's all clear, and now...the question. I thought I'd give you a fairly easy one, and because it's Hallowe'en, what better episode to choose it from than "Halloween": *** In "Halloween," what does Cordelia dress up as? *** So...what are you waiting for? ;-D Email me your answer right now at the above address, and include your full name and address.
