In fact, the whole explanation of the purpose behind the candy >was really weak. The candy did seem like overkill in order to steal just four babies; I was thinking the tribute was going to be some large number of the children in Sunnydale, something requiring town-wide chaos. For just four babies, although the candy was a useful method (the hospital staff and police are rendered ineffective in stopping and pursuing the baby snatchers, and afterward the missing babies would just be considered part of the general chaos), something subtler and smaller scale would have worked. Maybe Trick chose the method, and he just likes unnecessarily grandiose schemes. Other thoughts: The mayor would seem to be a version of the frat boys from "Reptile Boy"; he made various deals with demons, providing human sacrifices in exchange for their aid. Maybe the mayor was in that fraternity, and branched out, adding additional demons for additional benefits. Does the candy specifically make someone act like THAT person did at 16? Giles specifically became Ripper, but would Joyce, back when she was 16, have done the same things as she did with Ripper here? And I personally was rather dull, responsible, and non-wild when I was 16, and not that different than I am now at 40; would the candy have had minimal effect on someone like me? - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 21:53:03 EST From: WiddleOne@aol.com Subject: Re: BUFFY: Cdn. spoilers for "Band Candy" > The demon sucked. Actually, as some of you probably suspected, the reason for Angel's brief appearances have more to do with contracts and such than plot or character development. According to my friend and entertainment expert: "Angel's scene was a waste -- but there's a good reason for it. Actors are paid residuals -- money they earn for reruns of a show. To get a residual for a particular show, you must appear in that show. David Boreanaz's contract might say he must be in the episode if he's not shooting some other movie or TV show. Or, Joss Whedon may have written the scene for him just to get him the residual pool. Whedon might also have convinced himself that the viewers need to see Angel at least once so they know the writers haven't forgotten him." just FYI, == Todd \\\\ The Browns are back! Imagination, I'd say; messages on Buffy tend to be a lot more direct in what they refer to. For example, take a drink, it's drugged, and you're almost eaten by a giant mantis or sacrificed by a demon. Have sex, and the guy turns into a soul-less killer. Or else they're the clear "horror of high school" metaphors; Angel turning evil after sex is the guy who doesn't call after he gets what he wanted sexually. But to connect the kidnapping of other people's babies to sacrifice to a demon with abortion, you have to ALREADY think of abortion as like that; if it's a message, it's a pointless one. WiddleOne@aol.com Tuesday, November 10, 1998 9:57 PM >Xander wanted to kill Angel even before he turned evil. I think the >complete difference b/w the good Angel and the evil Angelus should >have made him realize that they're two completely different entities. I'd point out that ANGEL frequently didn't treat human and vampire selves as two completely different entities, and he should know. For example, consider Angel's attitude toward Drusilla in "Lie to Me"; he treats HER as the girl who HE cruelly mistreated, not as a demon inhabiting the dead body of the girl that the demon inhabiting Angel's body cruelly mistreated. Angel often seemed to consider himself as the evil Angelus who now had a soul that made him regret what he did. Sort of like an honestly-reformed criminal or cured lunatic who did horrible crimes, and the question is do you punish or do you forgive, with Xander on the punish side, rather than Xander wanting to punish someone who was just an innocent bystander. - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 22:18:35 -0500 From: Cyprus Subject: Re: BUFFY: Band Candy >Cyprus Tuesday, November 10, 1998 9:27 PM > > But to connect the kidnapping of other >people's babies to sacrifice to a demon with abortion, you have to >ALREADY think of abortion as like that; if it's a message, it's a pointless >one. > Good point. I thought my claim was a bit of a stretch, but let me play advocatus diaboli for a moment. The show depicted adults as a bunch of hedonistic, selfish, irresponsible teen-agers. Sort of reminded me of the whole baby-boom generation wanting to re-live their youth at any cost, even at the cost of forsaking their responsibility to the young. This the source of the angry tension between the Boomer Generation and the so-called Xer's and the Busters. But, perhaps, there is a scarier cost to the American desire to be young and carefree as long as possible. Perhaps, it is no accident that during the what is known as the 'Me Decade' Roe v. Wade was decided--while the Boomer self-obssession party was just starting. I dunno. Perhaps, I've been reading too much wacked-out conservative culture criticism. All right, so I'm jumping the gun. But with that ambiguous ending to Band Candy, G&J sure acted as though Buffy in fact had *not* stopped them before they "did something". It confirmed to me that it is a much better thing for me to stay an adult and to just enjoy watching the foibles of teenagers, rather than try to relive those years. However, it was a lot of fun to watch Giles and Joyce behave as a pair of teenagers hot for each other and to then see Buffy try to act as the grownup to get them to basically cool it. Another fun item that recurred through the show was the references that the adults made to things that they considered cool, such as Burt Reynolds, "Louie, Louie", and Kiss. No wonder the real teenagers were standing around being shocked at the adults. I loved the Willow/Xander sub-text, especially with them playing footsie in the study hall. And Buffy's driving! Wow. Joyce really needs to take her out and give her some practice time behind the wheel. Although now that Joyce is back to being an adult, Buffy probably will not drive again until she has finished paying back the car repair costs. All in all, this was a fun episode. It also left me wondering just how many demons the mayor owes a tribute. My thoughts are as follows: POOR CORDY! I know Xander and Willow are headed for a collision course but I feel sorry for Cordelia. She really loves Xander. I guess I should feel sorry for Oz too, but I don't as much as I feel sorry for Cordelia. Both Xander and Willow are deceiving their friends and it seems to be somewhat out of character for Willow. I'm thinking that this breakdown in Willow's morals is done to show that it's real love between her and Xander? Or maybe it's just a case of Willow proving all too human and succumbing to her passions? I don't know. I'm wondering how they are going to resolve this, because sooner or later Oz and/or Cordelia are going to catch Willow and Xander playing footsies. Actually, I'm kinda looking forward to Oz finding out his Willow has betrayed him because the Oz man never seems to display much emotion outside of that one time he punched Xander in BB&B. Remember when Willow caught Xander and Cordelia kissing in the library? Wasn't that a heart crushing moment? I mean you almost felt like crying for her. I'm thinking there's going to be another heart crushing moment when Cordelia finds Xander and Willow making out but that will soon be followed by one big giant cat fight! GILES & JOYCE Actually, I'm thinking the brief romance shared by the candy-drugged Giles and Joyce might be an interesting thing to develop. Buffy would have a real family with Giles as her dad. But as you all saw, they ended the episode with a rather embarrassed Giles and Joyce quickly turning and going their separate ways. However, it does leave the door open for future developments should they choose to take it that way. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens when Joyce and Giles meet again, because what happened in Band Candy isn't something that can be dismissed. Those two shared alot of mouth-sucking time together as boyfriend/girlfriend. In any case, this definitely sets Giles up as the father-figure in Buffy's life now that he's been romantically involved with Joyce. BUFFY'S GOING TO COLLEGE Yep! The signs are all there. Evidently, when Angel leaves Buffy will be moving on to higher education. I'm wondering what she'll major in. Police Science? It's something to think about. Remember the vocational tests she took? They recommended she would be perfect with a career in Law Enforcement. "10 - 4, Officer Summers, we've got a bunch of strange looking PCP crazies raiding the blood bank at 4th and Main Street." ANGEL AND BUFFY (aka Romeo and Juliet) All the signs were there. Angel and Buffy are going to get involved again. Probably we can all look forward to Buffy having her heart smashed to pieces again when she loses Angel. Hey, did you see Angel doing those Tai Chi moves? I could tell he's a beginner, but he's getting better. I guess you all saw the previews. We'll all find out just how much Buffy loves Angel next week I'm sure. PRINCIPAL SNYDER and the SUNNYDALE MAYOR I'm glad they let Principal Snyder let down his hair...what hair he has at least. It was good to see Snyder act like a halfway decent human being. Do you sense a change? It looks like Snyder isn't as big and bad as he was before. I sense the Mayor of Sunnydale will now become the biggest baddie of them all, even more bad than Mr. Trick who is now nothing more than the Mayor's underling. It's kinda funny in a very revealing way that of all the monsters, demons, vampires and other Forces of Darkness, the Mayor who is a politician, is turning out to be the Supreme Evil. I'm wondering if that's a message from Joss Whedon. funee ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. This is a message from a former anti-Willow/Xander shipper: Xander and Willow should be together. Here's the reason: Xander and Willow do not love Cordelia and Oz. Oz and Willow We've seen evidence of their *caring* in several episodes. Willow protects and supports Oz in "Phases" and "AMAB." In "Anne," despite being the farthest away from Willow, Oz manages to get to her fastest when she is attacked by a vampire. Oz seems to love and care for Willow unconditionally. He likes her in Eskimo outfits, in "slutty" outfits, when she's smart and when she's a talkative spaz. He even admits that he loves her. In the last scene of "Phases" we find out the Oz is in love with Willow, when he says, "A werewolf in love" as she walks away. This unconditionality is something that seems to be missing in Willow. She always seems to need to *find* reasons to like Oz. She has to qualify her relationship with him. For example, "Surprise," when Buffy mentions Oz, the best thing that Willow can say is, 'I like his hands." Admittedly this is early in the relationship, but it is indicative of her attitude in episodes to come. In the third, season her greatest endorsement of him seems to be his mind. In "Anne," she is very upset that he flunked, because his test scores say that he is a genius. In "AMAB," when Oz mentions that he aced his Biology final, she says, "That's because you showed up." In the most recent episode, she brags about the fact that he had the highest SAT score of any person that ever flunked. Willow also seems to like him because of his association with a band. There are many instances where she shows or states how cool she thinks his being in a band is. Dating Oz, she is no longer Geek-Hacker-Girl-with -Loser-Friends. She becomes the Girlfriend-of-a-Guy-in-a-Cool-Band. She cares for Oz, because of what can do and because of what he does for her. I'm not deriding the girl; this is just how I see it. In the beginning, I stated that Oz and Willow seem to lack passion; they do. We've seen them kiss twice (In "Phases" and "F,H&T), and neither kiss was very extraordinary. The best description would be "cute." The most passionate kiss that Willow has ever received on the show was from Xander in "Homecoming." Contrary to what she feels for Oz, she loves Xander with all of his shortcomings. She knows him inside and out. She loves him whether he is smart, dumb, insensitive, sensitive, a jerk or a sweetheart. She may get angry at him, but she forgives him his tresspasses and she doesn't judge him. Ever. Xander and Cordelia Now, Xander and Cordy seem to have an excess of passion. Their relationship is primarily based on sex, although they do have tender feelings for each other. These two could not maintain a long distance romance based on phone calls, e-mails and letters. The physical distance would be too great. This is what happened in "Anne." Cordy left over the summer, and when she returned they had trouble reconnecting. Apparently they had no contact while she was away. Most people call and write the ones they love during a separation. When they saw each other, for the first time in several months, neither had anything to say. They didn't reconnect until she fell on top of him, and they kissed. Another problem is that their relationship is mainly based on negatives. Cordy loves him *despite* the fact that he is a badly dressed dork, who hangs out with dangerous people in dangerous situations, makes fun of her value system and mocks her at every turn. Xander likes Cordy *despite* the fact that she is vapid, materialistic, self-centered, tactless, and often bitchy. Cordy, I think is genuinely in love with Xander. She admits to being in love with him in "Homecoming" and even promises to stay with his when she thinks he has turned into a monster in "Go Fish." Also in "Band Candy," Cordelia separates her life as BX (before Xander) and after Xander. In dating Xander, Cordy has sacrificed a great deal: her uncontested reign as Queen C of Sunnydale High, as well a any sense of safety. Xander on the other hand has sacrificed nothing in his pursuit of Cordelia. He has had to deal with some blows to his ego, but he is still dating one of the most popular girls in school. I think that Xander cares for Cordy, but he does not love her. My only definitive proof of this is the fact that he has never said anything about love and his recent behavior toward Willow. When he kissed Willow, it was completely natural and passionate. In the past, Xander had been unable to love Willow romantically, because in his eyes she was an eternal child, the little girl in pigtails and footy pajamas that grew to be a gawky girl that helped him with his homework and loved him. When he saw her in that dress he realized that she was a desirable woman for the first time. Willow became the fantasy beloved-- beautiful, smart and loving. She knows everything about him and loves every part of him, good and bad. I must emphasize that the friendly love that Xander had felt for her in the past DID NOT suddenly turn into romantic love. Xander has *re-fallen* in love with the *woman* that Willow has become and has left the childhood love behind forever. A similar thing happened to Willow. I think that between seasons two and three she honestly fell *out* of love with Xander. She did her best to attach those feelings to Oz, but to no avail. In the dressing scene from "Homecoming" she asks, "Since when were you a gentleman?" Then she sees him in his tux. She wasn't just seeing a good looking guy in a tux; she was *re-seeing* Xander. She had fallen out of love with her childhood crush, now she was confronted with the man of her dreams. In that moment she saw Xander as a man and fell in love with that man. As much as I love Oz (and I do love that guy-- he is such a sweetie) and have come to like Cordy, they deserve better than to have lovers that don't love them completely. I don't want either one of them to get their hearts broken, but it inevitable. Willow and Xander's love won't be denied for long. Fini God, that was exhausting! Thanks for reding to the end.
