Speaking of nominations, The Golden Globe nominees are announced on the 17th, which is this Thursday. It might be a chance for Buffy and/or Sarah Michelle Gellar to get some recognition. In past years the Golden Globes has been a little more nonstandard than the Emmys -- The X-Files has won 3 of the last 4 years with Party of Five taking the award in 1995. From what I've read, although these awards get a lot of coverage -- so it would be great for Buffy to get mentioned in the same breath as ER, NYPD Blue, The Practice and the other cast of regulars -- they're a bit of a joke. They're voted on by only about 90 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (many of whom are not "foreign" and who are only part-time members of the "press") and it's widely accepted that there's a direct correlation between the chance of nomination and winning and the amount of gifts that you shower on the voters. So let's hope The WB has been handing out plenty of free stuff to these chosen 90. For what ever reason, Buffy was prevented from going to Sunnydale due to the Wish. We can only guess what horrors she has undergone, perhaps with a less competent or sympathetic watcher, perhaps with family dead, and no friends. During Giles' telephone call to Buffy's watcher, it seemed that hell has broken out all over the world. Perhaps in this alternate reality, the Judge, Ancathla (sp?) or both have risen. That would explain why everyone has not fled Sunnydale--if it is awful everywhere, many people would chose the Hellmouth they know, versus getting used to other local demons. Also, at that point, denial is no longer possible. Mortal humans may be an endangered species. We have not learned definitively what aspects of a human the vampire demon inherits when it takes over a body. Intelligence seems to be one thing, and a few mortal likes and dislikes. Xander and Willow may have been considered "losers" by their high school classmates, but they have proven their overall intelligence and courage many times. (Xander may lack common sense at times, but he is not dumb. In fact, I am beginning to suspect he has a subtle learning disability.) As humans, they were stalwarts of the Scooby Gang. It does not surprise me to find them the Master's chief assistants, despite their "youth." As for Spike and Drusilla, they never cared for hierarchies and ceremony anyway--they are both anarchists at heart. Spike would annoy the Master greatly, so they probably are off creating havoc in Cleveland. After all, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is there. ;-) The AIDS metaphor is interesting, but probably should not be pushed. What is sad in a way is how few folks had banded together to fight the demons. Four white hats out of an entire town is a tiny force, unless the rest are dead, and they are the lone survivors. It makes me wonder whether if in the "real" Buffyverse, the Scooby Gang did send a call out for the town to unite, how many would show up... At least we know the Larry and Nancy would answer the challenge. Take care, and thanks for all the analysis! Kathryn (a librarian) PS Giles did look cute in scruffy mode. I wonder whether the tweed is a repudiation/defense mechanism against his wild youth, and when Giles is engulfed in total war, it seems irrelevant to keep up the front. - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Dec 1998 12:04:47 EST From: RayneFire@aol.com Subject: Re: BUFFY: Amanda For President In a message dated 12/14/98 10:35:41 AM Eastern Standard Time, rohaly@iaw.com writes: > and it's widely > accepted that there's a direct correlation between the > chance of nomination and winning and the amount of gifts > that you shower on the voters.
