The good/evil role reversal has been depicted many times on the series. We think they're evil, but their goodness shines through ... or the twist comes when the good girl in the corner unleashes her rath. Simple example - Darla in the opening sequence of the pilot, as mentioned earlier. Some people thought Mrs. Post in "Revelations" was good until she whacked Giles (she reeked of evil from minute one to me, on the other hand). Beyond that were Hansel and Gretel in "Gingerbread". Here we are reminded of the monsters lying in fairy tales - but they may be the characters or people we least suspect. Fairy tales tend to show a variant on female characters. The young heroine, if not a princess by birth, usually ends up marrying a prince. She is typically motherless - sometimes for unknown reasons. If the father or father figure is present, he might have a different opinion that the girl. If there's a stepmother, she tends to be evil to the core, even trying to murder the girl. If the villain isn't a stepmother but is still female, odds are - she's evil. Not to mention the "beware of ugly looking monsters" idea. Again, this is not representative of ALL fairy tales. I know there are always counterexamples out there. What Joss is able to show with his universe is not to judge a book by its cover. In "Gingerbread", the lovely little kids that the mothers sympathized with were attempting to murder the innocent, forming a monster. (Literally, in this case.) Raise your hand if witchhunts "give you the wiggins". Oh Willow is the coolest! Did anyone else think of how much she has changed? Seems like the "shaving" scene from Reptile Boy really turned her around. How's that for referencing old episodes? Am I the only one who thinks Giles pulled Cordy's hair out on purpose? At first I thought the same thing about the toadstone, but I thought he said toadstool and he was telling Cordy it was some icky toad thing and not just a mushroom. I gotta say, Go Giles! And finally someone comments on Giles' habit of getting KO'd and waking up after the fight is over. Few questions: Do all the bullies at Sunnydale High School fear Buffy now? I know Xander was upset that she should get that rep, as opposed to him being thought of as a wimp. Must be hard to feel manly around Buffy. *ducks for feminist discussion flames* I'm kidding guys! Next question: Willow's mom is repressing, but they implied that Joyce isn't. ???? So is she torn apart with grief for trying to burn her daughter, or does she not care? I doubt we will see follow up to this, but I sorta wish it would happen. One last thing, since no one else seemed to catch the Very Bad pun, Xander's comment, "What's with the grim?" As in, The Brothers Grimm. *groan* Oh, and I only got a glance at the newspaper article from Germany, and my German is rusty, but Giles' interpretation was right on. And his accent's not bad either. Much better than Scully's, by the way. *lurk mode on* Kero - -- Kerowyn, Duchess of Buffonia angel@amnix.com Keeper of Giles' Broadsword and proud GASPer Keeper of Willow's Ear Slurp on Xander and Willow's Axe of Unrequited Love (BBB) Nitpicker's Guide to Buffy http://www.amnix.com/~angel/ - - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 21:57:38 EST From: Coolkarma@aol.com Subject: BUFFY: gingerbread: amends part 2? something occurred to me while i was thinking about last night's episode. remember back in dead man's party, when buffy started packing her stuff and willow caught her? then willow made that speech about how she was going through stuff too and it would have been nice to have buffy around? well, i wonder if last night buffy redeemed herself with willow? i mean, i know willow had pretty much forgiven buffy, but for willow to spout off like that she must have really been hurt, and that doesn't go away overnight. so at the end of gingerbread, buffy is in willow's room, and if i am not mistaken it is the first time buffy has taken any real interest in what willow does. they spent time together in the past, but it usually involved the latest with angel. and as for joyce, buffy never seemed to spend much time with her unless she needed consoling (and usually about angel). but last night, buffy was there for her mom's needs, doing her best to comfort joyce over finding those two dead children. also, about cordelia. when she spouted off to buffy, i almost expected buffy to shout right back at her or at the very least jerk her hair (okay, it's the catfight lover in me). but she didn't, and i wonder if that may have had something to do with cordy coming around? okay, so there was also a mob thing going, but when buffy silently took her wrath, maybe cordy got to thinking about how cruel she had been and that it wasn't buffy's fault what xander did. very few would have put up with cordy venting like that without agreeing with her (as her fake friends do) or spouting back. and when cordy came to the rescue with the firehose, that was her way of making amends for the horrible way she treated her friends. i guess what i mean is that saying "i'm sorry" helps, but it's the acts of kindness like the ones displayed last night that make the difference. and though i got mad at everyone picking on buffy in dead man's party, over time i began to understand their situation a little bit, and i think buffy finally did as well. gary - - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 19:11:24 -0800 From: Jessica Tear Subject: Re: BUFFY: Angel Saves the Day - shaking head At 06:14 PM 1/13/99 -0800, Little Willow wrote: > >Actually, I was glad Angel didn't come to save the day at the close of the >episode. My money is that this happens in "The Zeppo" episode. The ep description I saw talked about Xander hanging out with "fast women". Now, purely based on the comments she's made about using men and losing them, and the general "bad girl" image the show has been giving to her, she could easily be one of the "fast woman" who is being referred to. Maybe she takes Xander on a ride to the bad side of the tracks. Maybe he asks her to do so. This would explain how Xander hooks up with the people mentioned in the episode description. Now, on the purely male, sexiest pig side of things, GO XANDER! Buffy's made it clear she's not interested (at least, not now), and Willow's still hung up over Oz, so why not Faith? They seem to get along pretty decently the few times we've seen them together in the show. They are both close to the same maturity level and probably dealing with some of the same personal issues (estrangement and insecurity and the like). I'm only wondering if it will be the start of something or just a one night stand. Probably one night stand.
