BYU Quarterbacks in the Pros Perform Better Than All Other Colleges
http://www.cnnsi.com/football/nfl/features/1998/magpreview/nfcwest/49ersnum.html

"Brigham Young boasts the highest cumulative career passer rating in NFL history (minimum 10,000 attempts per school).  Nine players from BYU have thrown a pass in an NFL game (including three nonquarterbacks); their combined career passer rating is more than four points better than that of Miami's players. "

"Jim Druckenmiller began the preseason as the San Francisco 49ers' No. 2 quarterback. He will start the regular season as the team's third quarterback, supplanted by Ty Detmer as the top backup to Steve Young."

"There were pros and cons to going either way, but right now, from a consistency factor, we feel just a little bit more comfortable with Ty,'' Coach Steve Mariucci said Monday.   "Our comfort zone with Ty exists probably because he's got six years in this system. He's gone through the growing pains and the learning curve that is required to be efficient in this offense.''

Transactions

Kaipo McGuire was re-signed by the Indianapolis Colts to be on their practice squad.

Scott Brumfield was placed on injured reserve by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Derwin Gray was released from the Carolina Panthers.

Shay Muirbrook was released from the Oakland Raiders.

Eric Bateman was released from the New York Jets.

Bateman Caught Off Guard, But Won't Give Up
Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/09021998/sports/50491.htm

"A promising offensive tackle, Bateman gave up his senior season at BYU to declare for the NFL draft in January. That decision triggered a series of events that led to his being selected in the fifth round by the New York Jets, working out in various camps for the team, struggling when coaches moved him to right guard, playing in one exhibition game, and getting dropped in the first cuts of the preseason."

Salt Lake Tribune

"All-American Shauna Rohbock scored the winning goal with a minute left to lift No. 19 Brigham Young to a 3-2 women's college soccer win over Massachusetts on Tuesday.   Rohbock scored on a breakaway pass from Maren Hendershot.   Hendershot and Kim Lowe also had goals for BYU, 1-0. Rohbock, Hendershot and Lowe each had an assist."

"John David Who?  Alabama will face a talented, aggressive BYU defense Saturday with a quarterback, John David Phillips, who has completed one pass in his college career.

The Cougars, armed to the teeth with new blitzes, are licking their chops.  "We want to get in there and rattle him early," BYU linebacker Brad Martin said. "We want to get him looking over his shoulder, install that fear factor."

Pac-10 Runner-up Will Go to Holiday Bowl
ESPN SportsZone
http://espn.sportszone.com/ncf/news/1998/980831/00823884.html

"The Holiday Bowl and Pac-10 Conference reached agreement Monday to place the league's runner-up in the annual postseason game for each of the next four seasons.

Bowl organizers announced Aug. 4 that they were opting out of their agreement with the three leagues because of the pending breakup of the WAC. But they said Monday that they are working toward a goal of providing the highest-ranked available team from the Big 12, the WAC or the WAC's eight breakaway teams."

The Cougars have alternated victories and losses in their last four season openers and are due for a win since losing at home last year to Washington 42-20."

Alabama Athletic Dept. BYU Game Press Release
http://www.ia.ua.edu/news/ftb/0831ftb1.htm

"Alabama opens the 1998 season with an intersectional meeting with Brigham Young University, the first-ever meeting between the two schools. It, too, will be the opening game for Brigham Young. The game will kickoff at 6:07 p.m. (CDT) with ESPN televising the game nationally."

Alabama Press Conference with Coach Mike Dubose
http://www.ia.ua.edu/news/ftb/0831ftbp1.htm

"We're excited about the program that BYU brings into Bryant-Denny Saturday night at 6 o'clock. There's probably four, five or six schools across the country, that, if you used just one word to describe them, that one word would be class. And I think this is the program that we're getting ready to play.  The job that LaVell (Edwards) and his staff have done over the years--not just one year but over a 26 year period of time-- speaks for itself. (He is) One of the truly great coaches and we're honored to have the opportuntity to compete against him on the playing field, so we're excited about that."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: BYU Insider Subject: [Insider] Pre-game : Alabama Date: 03 Sep 1998 16:39:15 -0600 Quick Facts

Team:  Alabama Crimson Tide
Location:  Tuscaloosa, AL
Time:  5 p.m. MDT
TV:  ESPN
Internet Radio:  http://www.KSL.com
Weather:  Partly Cloudy, High 86, Low 68
Latest line:  Alabama by 4

Game Overview

BYU is on a mission to overcome last year's 6-5 mediocrity and prove that they haven't abandoned their fabled passing game.  One luxury they enjoy that they didn't last year is some experience to go along with talent at quarterback.  The return of Ronney Jenkins and Kalani Sitake to action bodes well for the Cougar running attack.
Defensively, the Cougar front seven look to be the strongest in this decade, led by linemen Byron Frisch and Darren Yancey, and linebackers Rob Morris and Brad Martin.  The defensive backfield is largely revamped from last year, with new cover guys Heshimu Robertson and Brian Gray and a healthy Chris Ellison.

Alabama should definitely improve over last year's dismal 4-7 mark.  From all appearances, they have a very solid team, with the two question marks being quarterback and offensive line.  John David Phillips, a fifth year senior, will be making his first start at QB, and will be backed up by redshirt freshman Andrew Zow, and both will be pushed for time by fan favorite, true freshman Tyler Watts.  The OL boasts some depth, but for the most part returns inconsistent players.  The featured running back is Shaun Alexander, who is bolstered by a solid supporting cast.  Probably the strongest part of the Tide offense is a WR corps that may be the best in the SEC.  However, tight end won't be a great strength for them this year.
Defensively, Alabama looks solid throughout.  Despite losing star DE Chris Hood to academic problems, the line looks to be tough and should be able to defend well against the run, but is limited in depth.  The linebackers have improved dramatically over last year and many new faces will get a chance to prove themselves.  Their biggest strength is their defensive backfield, which features around a dozen fast, strong players that are all capable of covering and hitting hard.

Implications

BYU wants to show that they can play with national powers, as it breaks away from the WAC.
Alabama's second year coach, Mike DuBose, wants to show that he can lead the Tide back to their winning ways.

Players to Watch

BYU
Ronney Jenkins -- Look for him to be used a lot in his first game back since '96.
Kevin Feterik -- On Saturday we'll get a good idea of whether another year of experience has turned him into the next great product of "the quarterback factory."
John Tait -- This pre-season All-American junior tackle will be the strength of the OL.
Defensive Line -- They look to rattle 'Bama's inexperienced QB early on.

Alabama
Shaun Alexander -- This talented running back has speed and moves (a la Ronney Jenkins), and the Tide will try to get the ball to him around 30 times.
Calvin Hall -- Leads an extremely talented group of receivers.
Tony Dixon -- This sophomore strong safety is a star in the making, and probably the most athletic of a very talented and deep defensive backfield.

Records to Watch

BYU has the current NCAA record of 286 consecutive games without being shutout.
LaVell Edwards is tied for 8th place for all-time Division I victories (234) with Bo Schembechler (Michigan).

Injury Report

BYU
Chris Ellison (FS), Drew Miller (QB) and Ronney Jenkins (RB) suffered minor injuries in fall camp, but should all be ready to play.

Alabama
Travis Carroll (LB) -- Arguably 'Bama's best defensive player, this middle linebacker is questionable for Saturday with a deep shoulder bruise and will probably only play sparingly.
Fernando Bryant (DB)-- This Charles Woodsoon type player twisted his knee returning a kickoff in practice.  He will still be able to play at cornerback, where he has started started for the last three years, but won't be returning punts and kickoffs as expected.
Antoine Hunter (DB) -- He's a defensive back trying to shake off a sore ankle.

Recap

http://football.yahoo.com/ncaaf/recaps/980905/bbiaad.html

"Shaun Alexander ran for a school-record five touchdowns, including a 28-yarder with 7:02 remaining that snapped a 24-24 tie, as Alabama broke a four-game losing streak in Tuscaloosa with a 38-31 victory over Brigham Young.

Feterik threw for one touchdown and ran for another for BYU, which has lost consecutive openers for the first time since 1987-88. The Cougars fell to Washington, 42-20, in last year's opening game.

Alabama grabbed a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on scoring runs of five and 37 yards by Alexander. Defensive lineman Byron Frisch got the Cougars on the board by returning a fumble 39 yards for a score on the first play of the second quarter.

A six-yard run by Junior Mahe and Owen Pochman's 23-yard field goal in the third quarter knotted the game, 24-24. The game was tied entering the fourth quarter but Alexander broke off scoring runs of 28 and two yards to give the Crimson Tide a two-touchdown advantage. Quarterback Kevin Feterik's 13-yard run with 15 seconds left halved the deficit, but Alabama recovered the ensuing onside kick."

Despite Loss, BYU Football in No Mood to Panic
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/sep/09081998/sports/51536.htm

"Pick at the negatives of their season-opening loss if you wish -- the clueless start, the penalties, the late turnovers -- but the BYU Cougars insist they feel no sense of panic, even as they approach the scariest part of their season.  ``We have something to build on,'' said quarterback Kevin Feterik.

That's one way to put it.     And the Cougs aren't worried?"

``Not at all,'' said defensive end Byron Frisch. ``I'd be worried if we didn't play this team and didn't discover the mistakes and the weak points that we have, because then we'd go into that game just as green as we were [against Alabama]. We're really going to bounce back well after this and learn from the mistakes we made and correct them. We'll be a better ball team.''

Ex-West Star Holtry to Leave Michigan for Y.
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/sep/09011998/sports/50421.htm

"Brigham Young University's football practice next week will include a new face, familiar to many of the state's football fans.  Former West High standout Jeff Holtry confirmed Monday that he is transferring from Michigan to BYU. He was given his release
from the Big Ten school last week after meeting with Michigan Coach Lloyd Carr.  Although Holtry has been accepted and is enrolled at BYU for the fall semester, he will sit out this season, by NCAA mandate. He will still practice with the team, however, using his redshirt season, and will have two more years of eligibility."

``I am excited,'' he said. ``When I decided to transfer, BYU was my first priority. I was going to call Arizona State also, but after talking to [assistant coach Chris Pella], I decided I didn't have to.''

Rockwood Is Bringing BYU Womens Soccer Toward the Top
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/sep/09081998/sports/51552.htm

"There have been big wins, and, at this rate, along this road, there will be bigger wins. But in the moment last week when Jennifer Rockwood's inelegant, bumpkin band of players from out-yonder West somewheres swung the hammer on the University of Massachusetts, a blue-blooded, pardon-me-would-you-happen-to-have-any-Grey-Poupon soccer team, right on UMass's NCAA banner-cloaked and tradition-soaked field, the BYU coach looked deep into the heavens and thanked the soccer gods. ``I just stood there, my heart pounding,'' she says. ``I thought, `What a feeling to have come this far, this fast, to beat a traditional Eastern power like that. It's amazing.  Someone out there must be looking after us.' ''

In the space of a few days, Rockwood's team beat UMass's Jim Rudy and William & Mary's John Daly, the third- and fourth-winningest coaches in NCAA history.  Starting their fourth season in Division I soccer, the Cougars are 53-13-1 and climbing in a sea of developing D-1 women's programs that now number around 250. And since the 31-year-old Rockwood built the program, working as BYU's soccer coach at the club level for five seasons prior to '95, remarkable success has fingered her as its progenitor."

After 16 Months, Cleveland Gets Coded in at BYU
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/aug/08291998/sports/49897.htm

"Down the street a ways, the unmistakable sounds of fall are in the air.  Shoulder pads popping, helmets clanging, the chant of hut-hut-hut piercing the hot August air and behemoth lineman grunting and groaning.  King Football is rearing its autumn head on BYU's campus.  All of which is giving Cougar basketball Coach Steve Cleveland room to breathe in the Marriott Center.

To say the past five months have been tumultuous for Cleveland is understating it. ``Make it 16 months,'' he says, noting his April 1997 arrival. It's just that the first 11 weren't devoted to deciphering the school's Honor Code.  Once he got clued in on the BYU's tenets governing illegal use of drugs and alcohol and pre-marital sex and such, Cleveland got hit with the news of another more generic transgression. His one returning star player from a year ago, sophomore Mekeli Wesley, will be academically ineligible for
the fall semester.

It's all enough to drive a guy to severe introspection.

Holiday Bowl Searches for Other Half in Big 12, Former WAC
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/sep/09041998/sports/50835.htm

"Having signed the Pac-10, the Holiday Bowl is pursuing affiliations with the Big 12 and the breakaway WAC schools to fill the other half of its matchup.  Coming up with an agreement to satisfy all parties will take some work, however.

The hard part? Making everybody happy.

The Pac-10 is pushing an arrangement for this year with the WAC champion and the Big 12's No. 3 team -- with the Holiday Bowl inviting the higher-ranked team. The agreement would carry over to next year and beyond, with the WAC replaced by the champion of the new, unnamed league -- which begins play next fall and includes BYU, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado State, Air Force, New Mexico, UNLV and San Diego State.

Neither the new league nor the Big 12 has signed off on the proposal, but Reid thinks an agreement is within reach.  ``We've got a lot of work to do, but I'm optimistic,'' Reid said Thursday."

Pre-game:  Arizona State
Quick Facts

Team:  #14 Arizona State Sun Devils
Location:  Provo, UT
Day:  Saturday, 9/12/98
Time:  7 p.m. MDT
TV:  ESPN2
Internet Radio:  http://www.KSL.com
Weather:  Scattered thunderstorms : high 81 : low 61
Latest line:  ASU by 6 1/2

Game Overview

BYU showed flashes of brilliance last week against Alabama, and is determined to improve in the areas that were weak points in that game.  The offensive line seemed to mesh after a slow start, and will definitely need to continue giving Feterik protection against ASU's powerful defensive front seven.  The Cougars' passing game should get a chance to be put on display on Saturday night.
The Cougar defensive backs will once again have the chance to prove themselves against a speedy squad of receivers.  The defensive line and linebackers will use their depth to wear away at the Sun Devils' offensive line.  Fulfilling defensive assignments will be crucial to stopping the ASU running attack, which has had at least one person rush for over 100 yards in its last six games.

Arizona State proved against Washington what everybody had suspected:  offensively, they're very good.  Ryan Kealy (QB) set school records for a freshman last year, and started off the 1998 season with an impressive game.  Featured running back J.R. Redmond also had an outstanding game.  The five starting offensive linemen are very good, and were a big part of ASU's 465 yards of total offense, but they lack quality backups.  The Sun Devils bring a number of very fast receivers to test the Cougar secondary for the second week in a row.
ASU appears to be solid defensively, especially against the run.  Watch for them to blitz early and often.  Their one weakness may be at cornerback.

Implications

BYU gets the chance to host a nationally ranked opponent and prove themselves against a premier PAC-10 team.

Arizona State will be looking for pay back after suffering a 13 - 10 loss to the Cougars last year in Tempe.  They're also still stinging from last Saturday's 42 - 38 loss to PAC-10 rival Washington.

Players to Watch

BYU
Ronney Jenkins (RB) -- He put up 125 all-purpose yards against Alabama despite suffering from leg cramps.
Junior Mahe (RB) -- This true freshman got a chance to show his stuff against Alabama, where he was relied on heavily in the 2nd half.

Arizona State
J.R. Redmond (RB) -- This Heisman candidate averaged 6.1 yards per carry last year, and racked up 254 all-purpose yards against Washington last week, besides a 60+ yard punt return for a touchdown that was called back on a penalty.
Ryan Kealy (QB) -- Made first team Freshman All-American last year.  Last week against Washington, he passed for a career high 302 yards, going 20 for 35 with 3 TDs and no interceptions.
Mitchell Freedman (FS) -- He's acclaimed as the hardest hitter in the PAC-10.  He's recorded 199 tackles so far during his ASU career.
Lenzie Jackson (WR) -- He leads the Devil receivers, and pulled in 53 catches for 733 yards last year.  He has caught balls in 26 consecutive games.  He also returned kickoffs against Washington, and is ranked 2nd in the PAC-10.

Records to Watch

BYU holds the current NCAA record of 287 consecutive games without being shut out.  The last game in which they didn't score was a 20 - 0 loss to ASU in 1975.
LaVell Edwards is tied for eighth place for all-time Division I victories (234) with Bo Schembechler (Michigan).

Injury Report

BYU
Jimmy Richards (C) -- His partially separated shoulder caused the final fumble in the Alabama game.  It's still tender, but he's expected to play through the season with some pain before undergoing surgery.

Arizona State
Craig Sweasy (OL) -- This reserve lineman hurt his knee in a pre-season practice.

  News Recap (9/12/98)

ESPN.com's BYU-ASU Game Preview
http://ESPN.SportsZone.com/ncf/1998/980912/preview/aambbi.html

"Trying to rebound from a devastating loss, 15th-ranked Arizona State will be out to avoid a repeat of last season when it travels to Brigham Young.

The Sun Devils' national-championship hopes took a major hit last weekend when they fell to Washington, 42-38.  Last season, Arizona State (0-1), sporting a 2-0 record, was defeated by BYU, 23-12, in Sun Devil Stadium. The loss broke a 13-game regular-season winning streak, a four-game winning streak over BYU and a string of eight consecutive wins over the Cougars in Sun Devil Stadium.

Arizona State holds a 20-6 edge in the all-time series, having won four of five and 13 of the last 16 meetings, and is 8-3 in Provo.  But Sun Devils coach Bruce Snyder is just 2-6 against BYU in his career, including a 2-5 mark at Utah State."

BYU-ASU Game on Cable TV
http://www.desnews.com/spt/y40irxah.htm
The Deseret News

"Saturday's BYU-Arizona State football game will only be telecast on ESPN2. But if you don't normally get ESPN2 on your cable system, don't worry.  TCI Cablevision, the primary source of for cable television in the state [of Utah], will make the ESPN2 feed of the Cougars vs. Sun Devils battle available to all area homes. The game will be on Channel 17 in most TCI homes throughout the Salt Lake Valley, although it will be on Channel 73 (fiber) and 410 (digital) in some homes. It will be on Channel 8 in Heber and Channel 29 in Park City."

Career Paths Cross Again for BYU's Skiba, ASU's Ioane
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/sep/09091998/sports/51607.htm
The Salt Lake Tribune

"When the BYU Cougars entertain the No. 14 Arizona State Sun Devils at Cougar Stadium on Saturday night, John Skiba will have a chance to get re-acquainted with an old adversary.  ASU's Junior Ioane.

Skiba played offensive guard at Ricks College in Idaho last year while Ioane played defensive tackle at Snow College in Utah. The two met at a game in Rexburg, where Skiba became convinced Ioane was ``the best player I ever played against. He helped me get to where I am.''

BYU recruited both players, and in fact had already signed Skiba when Ioane visited the campus in Provo. And though the 6-foot-4, 312-pound Ioane eventually chose ASU, he told his hosts at BYU that Skiba was the toughest opponent he had ever faced."

BYU Women's Volleyball Falls to No. 1 Long Beach State
http://www.desnews.com/spt/y41dmbjh.htm
The Deseret News

"For a brief time Friday night, life was a beach for the BYU women's volleyball team.  The sixth-ranked Cougars scored the first 10 points of the first game against Long Beach State — rated No. 1 in one poll and No. 2 in another — and it looked like an upset in the making.

As it turned out, the Cougars' explosive start was only a mirage.  While BYU wound up winning that opening contest, the visiting 49ers doused any hopes for a Cougar celebration by rallying for a 8-15, 15-5, 15-8, 15-9 victory before 3,045 fans at the Smith Fieldhouse.  In the process, the 49ers handed BYU its first defeat and claimed the BYU Invitational championship. They improved to 5-0 while the Cougars fell to 5-1.

"The difference was experience," said BYU coach Elaine Michaelis. "They're a very experienced team and have great leadership on the court. The confidence was just exuding from them. They have great senior leadership."

Heisman Candidates Come Calling on BYU
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/sep/09111998/sports/51927.htm
The Salt Lake Tribune

"It's early yet, and the top candidates for college football's top award -- the Heisman Trophy -- have not been subjected to all of the pressure-packed trials through which they must pass to be considered serious contenders late in the season.

All the same, the BYU Cougars find themselves with an uncommon opportunity during the next two weeks. They get to face not one, but two of the players who have more than a fanciful chance to be among the Heisman finalists -- J.R. Redmond of Arizona State and Washington's Brock Huard. The Cougars open their home season against No. 14 ASU on Saturday night, before traveling to play No. 10 Washington next weekend. "

``I like to play against those guys,'' said BYU linebacker Rob Morris. ``That's who I want to play against.''

Can Rogers Captain Cougar Volleyballers to Final Four?
 http://www.sltrib.com/1998/sep/09101998/sports/51722.htm
The Salt Lake Tribune

"Korie Rogers is not afraid to say it. She does not fear any jinx.  The 6-foot senior hitter believes this is the year the BYU Cougars will return to the women's volleyball Final Four.   ``I do,'' she said. ``We have a lot more depth and a lot more options. We're just a lot bigger, and the new people that came in are a little more mature, playing-wise.''

And then there's Rogers herself.

One of four Cougars seniors, she won second-team All-America honors last season while playing alongside Amy Steele Gant, who was perhaps the finest player in BYU volleyball history. But Gant is gone now, and the team belongs to Rogers. She's the team captain and its leading weapon, and feels a bit more pressure to keep the Cougars on pace to make their first appearance in the Final Four since their only one in 1993, when they finished 29-3. Last year, BYU finished 29-6 and came within one victory of the Final Four.

``I just feel like I have to do well in order for us to succeed,'' Rogers said.  ``In years past, I could kind of sit back and just kind of do my own thing, or whatever. But now, it's just kind of like, `You have to do well.' You know?  ``Everybody has a responsibility to do well,'' she added. ``But I just feel like I have to make sure everyone does well.''

Recap
http://ESPN.SportsZone.com/ncf/1998/980912/recap/aambbi.html

"Kevin Feterik and Ben Horton hooked up on a 74-yard touchdown pass and Owen Pochman kicked four field goals as Brigham Young handed 15th-ranked Arizona State its second straight loss, 26-6.

Ronney Jenkins carried 30 times for a career-high 171 yards for BYU (1-1), which rebounded from last week's loss at Alabama, where the Cougars surrendered five touchdowns to tailback Shaun Alexander."

http://football.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news/ap/980913/ap-arizonast-b.html

"A multi-talented tailback dominated the game at Cougar Stadium, and it wasn't J.R. Redmond.   Sophomore Ronney Jenkins had a career-high 171 yards rushing, 43 receiving and scored a touchdown as Brigham Young blasted No. 14 Arizona State 26-6 on Saturday night.

BYU (1-1) upset Arizona State for the second straight year. Last season, the Sun Devils were also ranked 14th before losing 13-10 to the Cougars at Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona State's high-powered offense sputtered all night as receivers dropped passes, quarterback Ryan Kealy missed his targets and Redmond, the star tailback,
looked helpless against BYU's run defense.

Redmond, who had 254 all-purpose yards last week against Washington, managed just 28 yards on 16 rushes.

BYU coach LaVell Edwards passed Michigan's Bo Schembechler for seventh place on the coaching victory list with 235. Edwards is third in victories among active
coaches."

NEWS

Detmer still a QB-in-waiting
http://www.desnews.com/spt/y20i3d77.htm
The Deseret News

"Quiz time: When Brett Favre was asked to name the next great quarterback in the NFL, whom did he call his "sleeper" choice?  Name the quarterback Ricky Watters once said was like Joe Montana?  Who is the quarterback that some of the brightest offensive minds in football have sought for their team, namely Jon Gruden of the Eagles, Mike Holmgren of the Packers and Steve Mariucci of the 49ers?  Name the quarterback who has played for three teams in seven seasons, has started only 18 games in his entire pro career, and on Sunday found himself limited to holding duty on field goals and extra points?  Answers: All the same — Ty Detmer."

"After Philadelphia, I wanted to get in the right situation, into a positive organization," he says. "Someplace where I could play well, where they put good players around you. The bottom line was Atlanta and Chicago were real interested and offered more money. But I had come to a point where I had proved I can play, and I want to get with a first-class system. I wanted people behind me when my time came to play."

Meanwhile, Detmer can study under the most efficient passer in the history of the NFL, although Young seems to view it the other way around.  "(Detmer) is such a student of the game," Young told the San Francisco Chronicle recently. "He's another coach, and a coach that's been out there in the fire who can give you perspective on a lot of issues. I really believe I've learned a lot already from Ty, and I will throughout the season.   Probably of all the players I've played with, he's the most gifted football mind you run into."

Transactions

The Cincinnati Bengals released guard Scott Brumfield with an injury settlement.

Press Releases for Washington Game

BYU's Press Release:  http://www.byucougars.com/football/releases/091498.html

"The Cougars (1-1) travels to Washington to face the Huskies (1-0) on Saturday, Sept. 19, 1:30 p.m. (MST), at Husky Stadium (72,500). BYU quarterback Kevin Feterik and running back Ronney Jenkins will match talents with Washington's highly touted quarterback Brock Huard on Saturday in a regionally televised game on ABC regional television. It's another WAC vs. Pac-10 showdown.

BYU gets Huskies' attention
http://www.tribnet.com/news/cover/sports/0915c13.htm
The Tacoma, WA News Tribune

"Any chance that the University of Washington might somehow overlook Brigham Young's football team evaporated as players and coaches watched BYU manhandle Arizona State, 26-6, Saturday night in a much more dominating fashion than UW had the week before.

"They did to ASU what we wanted to do to them defensively that we didn't get done," said UW outside linebacker Todd Johnson.  "I was very surprised," UW coach Jim Lambright said of the Cougars. "I expected Arizona State to go down there and be a very angry football team because of the loss (to the Huskies).  I was surprised at how inept BYU made them."

Kevin Feterik to be on ESPN chat
http://chat1.starwave.com/chat/chat.dll?room=szplayers

"The Players" series continues Thursday and as part of this week's package, BYU quarterback Kevin Feterik makes a special visit to chat at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday.

He will discuss this week's topic concerning college football players and their dealings with the media.  He will also talk about BYU's upset of Arizona State on Saturday and preview this weekend's game against No. 9 Washington."

This Time It's BYU's Defense Getting Kudos
http://www.sltrib.com/09151998/sports/52563.htm
The Salt Lake Tribune

"Who would have thought that halfway through their presumed death march of a nonconference schedule, the BYU Cougars would be attracting national notoriety for their defense?  Probably nobody.

Even the BYU coaches, who knew the Cougars would be stronger on defense than offense early in the season because of eight returning starters, were surprised at how easily the Cougars handled Arizona State on Saturday night."

``We can be known for our defense,'' said linebacker Rob Morris, who leads the team with 26 tackles. ``This year, we've got a lot of guys who can play `D.'  We knew going into last week at Alabama that we had a lot of guys who can play `D,' but for whatever reason, we didn't show up. . . . This week, you saw what our potential was. If we come out every week and play like that, and if we can become consistent at meeting our potential, we can be known as a great defense.''

Washington, BYU have done a role-reversal with offenses
http://www.desnews.com/spt/y80kp9j9.htm
The Deseret News from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer

"On display Saturday at Husky Stadium is the equivalent of Pavarotti singing at the rodeo.  Talk about out of character. Brigham Young University, home to the greatest passing offense in NCAA football history, will offer for the Washington football home opener three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-beehives.

Behind a running back named Ronney Jenkins, whom UW coach Jim Lambright likens to Napoleon Kaufman, BYU has gone Ground Chuck.  In its two games, a close road loss at Alabama and a home win over Arizona State, BYU has thrown a total of 51 passes.  In the past, BYU could throw 51 passes between "Oh, say can you see . . . " and ". . . rocket's red glare."

Fortunately, the Huskies, as gracious hosts, will attempt to keep the expected sellout from staring rudely all afternoon at their guests' disfigurement.  Washington is coming out in a role reversal of its own — a full WAC.

Against the Sun Devils, Husky quarterback Brock Huard threw a personal-high 47 passes and completed 27, three shy of Sonny Sixkiller's school record. He threw to a group of receivers whose most experienced pass catcher was a running back with eight previous receptions. But at times there seemed to be dozens of receivers."

Game Overview

BYU is coming off of a great win against a PAC-10 power, and would love to repeat that performance.  Offensively, the Cougars show running power reminiscent of the 1996 team that featured Ronney Jenkins and Brian McKenzie.  A balanced attack coupled with penalty free play should prove to be important in this meeting with UW.  BYU has scored on all seven of their trips inside their opponents' 20 yard line this season, but they would like to turn more of those trips into touchdowns instead of field goals.
Once again, the BYU defensive backs will be called on to match up against a premier quarterback and a deep group of fast receivers.  The play of the DBs will be a key in the outcome of this game.  In somewhat of a role reversal, Washington appears to be the more pass-oriented team, which means that the BYU defensive line will probably spend more time trying to get after Brock Huard than it will stopping the run.

Washington fields a team this year that is very potent offensively, having put up 431 yards in their first game.  For the first time in years, UW doesn't have a featured running back, but they make up for it with their passing game.  All six receivers who caught a pass against ASU either set or tied their career high for receptions.  The Huskies had two players log over 100 yards in the same game for the first time in seven years.
Washington appears to field a strong, quick defense that is great against the run.  They had trouble containing ASU's Ryan Kealy when he left the pocket, so if Feterik shows the kind of mobility he did last week, it will be a plus for the Cougars.  The Huskies are ranked at #11 in the country on kickoff returns, so special teams play could have a big influence on the game.

Implications

BYU finishes off its tough early season schedule with a team that they've struggled against for the past two years.  This may be the final ranked team that the Cougars will play during the regular season, so a win is important for national credibility.  Beating two ranked opponents in a row will undoubtedly bring some respect Provo's way.

Washington wants to defend its #9 national ranking and go to Nebraska next week as an undefeated team.  They pride themselves on their 22-5-1 all-time record against WAC teams.

Players to Watch

BYU

Ronney Jenkins (RB) -- His career high of 171 rushing yards last week got him plenty of attention.

Rob Morris (LB) -- He has led the team in tackles and defensive points for both games this year.

Byron Frisch (DE) -- He's been a "do it all" player so far, returning a fumble for a touchdown at Alabama and blocking an extra point against ASU, as well as excelling in his duties at defensive end.

Owen Pochman (PK) -- He personally scored more than twice as many points as ASU last week.  He's the fourth ranked kicker in the nation, hitting 100% of his field goal attempts, and averaging 2.5 per game.  He's made his last 34 consecutive PATs.

Washington

Brock Huard (QB) -- He passed up his chance at the NFL to return for his this, his junior year.  Washington's new spread offense features his passing and athletic ability.  In his first game this year, he threw 47 passes for 27 completions and 318 yards, all career highs.  He was named the USA TODAY Online national offensive player of the week.

Dane Looker (HB) -- He was Huard's top receiver in high school, and just transferred from Western Washington.  In his first game in a Husky uniform, he caught 11 passes (tying the UW record) for 108 yards and two touchdowns.  He ranks fourth in the nation for receptions per game.

Reggie Davis (TE) -- This senior has played six different positions for the Huskies during his career, and got off to a good start at tight end, catching five balls for 110 yards, including two for touchdowns.  His 63 yard scoring grab against ASU was named the Compaq Computers' National Offensive Play of the Week.

Records to Watch

BYU holds the current NCAA record of 288 consecutive games without being shut out.

Injury Report

BYU
Jimmy Richards (C) -- He re-injured his shoulder against ASU, but is expected to play.

Kalani Sitake (RB) -- He suffered a concussion in the ASU game after Mitchell "Fright Night" Freedman's shot to his head, but should be ready to go.

Will Snowden (RB) -- He did not play against ASU because of a pulled hamstring, and is questionable for this week.

Washington

Nick Lentz (PK) -- This sophomore kicker has a pulled quad and probably will not play.

Willie Hurst (RB) -- The Huskies relied heavily on this freshman until he broke his left thumb.  He's doubtful for Saturday's game.

Ja'Warren Hooker (SE) -- He partially separated his shoulder against ASU, but has made a quick comeback and should be ready to go.

Lester Towns (LB) -- This senior has returned to his starting spot after playing as a backup against ASU, following off-season foot surgery.

Larry Tripplett (DL) -- This freshman has a minor ankle sprain.

Washington Game Preview
http://football.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news/ap/980918/ap-byu-washing.html

"The Washington Huskies aren't getting caught up in their high ranking. Their attention is on Ronney Jenkins and BYU.  ``We all saw how meaningless the polls were last year,'' Washington junior quarterback Brock Huard said.   ``What we learned last year is that this is a journey that takes a lot of focus each and every week. All our attention this week has to be on BYU.''

No. 9 Washington (1-0) is favored to beat the Cougars (1-1) on Saturday at Husky Stadium.  The Huskies think they were guilty of looking too far ahead last year after being billed as national championship contenders. They finished with an 8-4 record.

The Huskies are hoping for a different result this season. They had a bye after a 42-38 season-opening victory at Arizona State. BYU also beat ASU, 26-6 in Provo, Utah, last Saturday.

With Jenkins at halfback, the Cougars have a running attack to go along with their passing offense. Jenkins, a sophomore, rushed for 171 yards on 30 carries and a touchdown against ASU.   BYU also has a stronger offensive line than last season, when it had a disappointing 6-5 record, including 4-4 in the WAC. "

BYU's Least Lauded Receivers Get Chance Thanks to Buttery Fingers
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/09171998/sports/52838.htm

"So much has gone so well for the BYU Cougars over the last week that it has been relatively easy to overlook a serious problem.

Dropped passes.  The Cougars dropped a half dozen of them in their 26-6 victory over Arizona State last week, which only emphasized the contributions of the defense and running back Ronney Jenkins. But the Cougars probably can't survive the No. 9 Washington Huskies in Seattle on Saturday without an improved effort from the receiving corps, and the coaches know it.

``We have to do something,'' said offensive coordinator Norm Chow. ``We can't go on like that.''  That, said Chow, means the Cougars will be giving some of their less-heralded receivers a chance. Redshirt freshman Soren Halladay figures to be one of them, along with redshirt sophomore Ben Horton, who hauled in a 74-yard touchdown pass against ASU.

Jenkins is the team's leading receiver with six catches for 66 yards, and his mates in the backfield have handled most of the receiving.  The running backs have made 16 of BYU's 26 receptions -- leaving the wide receivers and tight ends to account for just 38.5 percent of the pass-catching.  Last year, the receiving corps accounted for 100-of-184 catches, for 54.3 percent."

====

"Backup quarterback Drew Miller, one of six Washington natives returning home to play the Huskies, has suffered this week from kidney stones.  The pain struck in practice on Tuesday and has relented only slightly, but Miller vows he'll be ready to play -- regardless of whether they've passed by Saturday."

Womens Soccer Climb To No. 14 in Poll
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/sep/09181998/sports/52927.htm

"The unbeaten BYU women's soccer team is continuing its ascent into uncharted territory, climbing to 14th in the latest national poll.  The Cougars also have a 24-game home winning streak dating to 1995, and get a chance for revenge tonight at South Field.   The Cougars play their first game of the WAC season, against New Mexico at 7.  The Lobos are not ranked, and in fact are having a tough time this season after losing leading scorer Laurie Hegedorn from last year's 15-5 squad. "

BYU to face some tough, tough teams
Future foes include UCLA, Notre Dame and Southern Cal
The Deseret News
http://www.desnews.com/spt/yb0moppu.htm

"And you thought playing Alabama, Arizona State and Washington in the same season was tough. Well, get used to it, BYU fans.  There's more where that came from.

If you're wondering about BYU's place among big-time programs, just check out the Cougars' tentative future schedules.  The opponents' names read like the "Who's Who" of college football.  Not only have the Cougars reprised home-and-home series' with Notre Dame and UCLA, they have recently slated a string of games against another pair of NCAA heavyweights, Michigan and Southern Cal.

It's likely BYU will also play Virginia of the Atlantic Coast Conference next season, according to BYU athletic director Rondo Fehlberg, while Syracuse of the Big East might pop up on the schedule in the near future.  And Ohio State is interested in signing a deal with BYU.

Considering the caliber of foe BYU will face in the 21st century, it doesn't appear the Cougars need to belong to the Pac-10 or Big 12 to play a formidable schedule after all.  Because BYU is creating a new, eight-team conference along with seven other WAC schools starting next season, the Cougars will have an extra non-conference game each year. And Fehlberg is busy filling up the BYU dance card."

Air game mentioned only in passing
The Deseret News
http://www.desnews.com/spt/ya0j0qm6.htm

"In sizing up Saturday's competition, Washington coach Jim Lambright said he has tremendous respect for BYU's control of the line of scrimmage. He's also impressed with tailback Ronney Jenkins and the Cougars' defense.  What he failed to mention, however, was BYU's storied passing attack.

And with good reason.  Through two games this season, the Cougars have yet to establish themselves in the air. BYU has attempted just 51 passes, completing 26, for a total of 348 yards. By appearance, the pass is a thing of the past in Provo. Over the course of a 38-31 loss at Alabama and last weekend's 26-6 victory against Arizona State, the Cougars have run the ball 81 times for 319 yards.

Edwards isn't concerned, though. He believes BYU's air attack will improve with experience."

Coug kicker seeks happy homecoming
The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/EB26BB6F89D332C887256683001DBD09?OpenDocument

"The last time a member of the Pochman clan kicked in Husky Stadium, only one of three field goals went through the uprights.  That was 1996, the 14-1 season, when Ethan Pochman did the kicker's equivalent of stuttering during a speech.  But Ethan never missed two field goals in a game the rest of the season.  And that native of nearby Mercer Island, Wash., went on to set school records for kicking and scoring, converting 65 of 67 PATs and nailing 21 of 30 field goals, including two critical attempts in the closing seconds and overtime of the WAC championship game, in a win over Wyoming.

Now it's another Pochman's turn. This time it's younger brother, sophomore Owen Pochman's  opportunity.  He also grew up in Mercer Island.  He knows how intimidating Husky Stadium can be.  So do other native Washington Cougars including receivers Michael Westbrook and Mike Rigell, quarterback Drew Miller, linebacker Justin Ena and offensive lineman Jason Scukanec."

Recap

"Washington's Brock Huard sputtered, but Toure Butler scored two touchdowns, one on a 98-yard kickoff return, and the No. 9 Huskies won their home opener 20-10 over BYU on Saturday.  Butler, a sophomore cornerback, also ran back a fumble recovery 35 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Washington (2-0) won its 13th consecutive home opener and beat the Cougars (1-2) for the fourth straight time.  But Huard and Washington's offense was unimpressive after winning a 42-38 shootout at Arizona State in its opener two weeks ago.  The Huskies went the final three quarters without a touchdown after Huard teamed with freshman Chris Juergens for a 52-yard TD pass in the opening period."

The Philadelphia Eagles released tight end Chad Lewis with an injury settlement.

TE Chad Lewis loses handle on roster spot
The Philadelphia Inquirer
http://www.phillynews.com/daily_news/98/Sep/16/sports/EAGS16.htm

"His soft voice matches his soft hands, but those hands weren't enough to keep him around.  Second-year tight end Chad Lewis was released yesterday.  Lewis, 26, delighted Eagles fans last season when, as an undrafted free agent, he made the team out of Brigham Young, where he was the Cougars' No. 2 tight end. Lewis caught 12 passes, four for touchdowns, in 1997, but had no catches and saw very little playing time in this year's preseason games.

Despite long hours attempting to improve, the 6-6, 252-pound Lewis was hurt by his suspect blocking ability.  He reportedly broke his ankle in Sunday's game in Atlanta and is expected to have reached an injury settlement with the Birds.  "This is not an easy move to make," Eagles coach Ray Rhodes said in a statement yesterday."

Relax, Ben hasn't lost those hands

The Daily Herald

"Ben Cahoon's wowing the masses in Montreal.  Remember Ben?  He's the former Mountain View star who set receiving records at Ricks College before making circus catches for BYU.  Now his act is drawing attention in the Canadian Football League.

Cahoon, a first-round draft pick of the Montreal Alouettes, has stunned his teammates and coaches with those magnet hands.  In fact, observers in camp even started a count one week, seeing how long Cahoon would go before he dropped a pass.  It's been that kind of CFL experience for the kid from Orem.

"You expect a guy from Brigham Young to have caught a lot of passes, but the things this guy does every day in practice amazes me," Alouette quarterback Tracy Ham said.  "And the thing is, he catches everything with his hands. You see some guys and they're always catching the ball in their pads.  Or the chest.  "He just uses his hands wherever the ball is. And if he's anywhere near the ball, he'll get it."

Miller looks to leave Y
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/yf0pb98x.htm

"The Deseret News learned late Tuesday morning that BYU sophomore quarterback Drew Miller has asked for and received a release from his commitment to the university.  The Cougars' backup received the release from BYU athletic director Rondo Felhberg. However, Miller plans to meet with head coach LaVell Edwards one more time before making his decision to leave final.

Miller, who last year became the first true freshman QB to start at BYU, declined comment Tuesday morning. His father, Dave Miller, told the Deseret News that the situation was "very volatile."  After losing a battle with junior Kevin Feterik for the starting job in fall drills, the Washington native has seen limited action this season, including no playing time in last week's loss at Washington. The latter, said his father, was the final straw.  "That was a real slap in his face," Dave Miller said. "That hurt Drew and made him very angry."

WAC suffers through horrendous weekend
The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/7E4309DED4AB0A2587256687005A3F1A?OpenDocument

"The WAC football champion remains homeless, and after an 0-8 weekend against non-conference opponents, the morale around the league offices is low."

"Last week was not a very productive week, both on and off the field," said commissioner Karl Benson, who wasn't talking about removing his name from consideration as the new athletic director at the University of Denver last Thursday.  "Regardless of the breakup, to go through a week where there are no wins, nothing to identify with except a couple of 'good performances,'is tough. Both leagues are looking to build some momentum and neither league established that this weekend."

BYU Newsnet

"Men's soccer continued its streak of victories in impressive fashion this weekend, beating Air Force 6-0 Friday night and handling Kansas 3-0 Saturday.   Freshman midfielder Chad Deshler led the Cougars with three goals against the Falcons on Friday and added another goal against the Jayhawks the next day."

Rogers Leads Women Cougars to Mizuno Classic Volleyball Title

"Led by the tournament MVP Korie Rogers, BYU’s No. 6-ranked women’s volleyball team swept through the BYU Mizuno Classic winning all three matches without losing a game. Saturday the Cougars defeated Northern Illinois, 15-4, 15-12, 15-9, and Central Michigan, 15-1, 15-5, 15-11, to improve their record to 8-1 on the year. "

Miller opts to remain with Cougars
http://deseretnews.com/spt/yg0ig3kr.htm

"BYU backup quarterback Drew Miller will remain with the team, BYU head coach LaVell Edwards announced Wednesday.  Miller, frustrated over not starting, was considering transferring, his father Dave Miller told the Deseret News on Tuesday.

"Drew is a fine young man and after speaking with him this morning, we are happy he's decided to stay with the program," Edwards said.  After a 30-minute meeting Tuesday afternoon with Edwards, the disgruntled sophomore QB joined his teammates out on the practice field.  Miller had declined comment on reports he was considering a transfer. His father had said it was a 99 percent certainty Drew would leave the Cougars in pursuit of more playing time elsewhere. The final straw, he said, was BYU's 20-10 loss at Washington Saturday."

Cougs Keep Upgrading Schedules
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/sep/09231998/sports/53740.htm

"Next season, the Cougars will play Washington, Virginia and California before entering their first season in the still-unnamed conference with the other seven teams that are leaving the Western Athletic Conference.  The Cougs finalized the Virginia deal on Tuesday.  ``That is a very strong home schedule,'' athletic director Rondo Fehlberg told KFNZ radio.

It doesn't stop there.  Last week, Fehlberg finalized a home-and-home deal that will pit BYU and Southern Cal for the first time in 2008, and has arranged for the Cougs to renew their rivalry with Notre Dame with meetings in 2002, 2003 and 2004.  A deal to play Michigan has been agreed upon in principle, Fehlberg said, and the Cougs also are working on arranging dates for games against UCLA, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech and Stanford. Utah State is the other non-conference game the Cougars will play next season. "

Game Overview

BYU  faces the #9 team in the nation for the second week in a row.  The one big difference is that this week, it's the ninth ranked Division 1-AA team.  As heavy favorites, the Cougars hope to control the game in the trenches and establish a consistent offensive flow.  The Cougar defense will be matching up against the fifth ranked passing offense in the 1-AA ranks.  Murray State has averaged 326 yards through the air in their first three games this season, all of which have been wins.  BYU's defensive backs have been called upon to cover some formidable challengers so far this year, and have responded well.  Their performance should be a key to slowing down the Racers.

Murray State will bring another facet to the table that is reminiscent of last week's Washington team:  a pass-geared offense led by a big, strong quarterback.  Justin Fuente has led the Racers to an average of 431 yards per game, most of which have come from passing the ball.

The Racers bring a solid defense to Provo that has held its opponents to an average of under 260 yards.  The special teams have also been impressive, with placekicker Greg Miller having made 5 of 5 field goals, and punt returner Wilbert Smith doing a good job.  Denver Johnson,
now in his second year as head coach at Murray State, posts a 10-4 record.  Three of those losses have been by four or fewer points.  He won the Ohio Valley Conference title in his first year as coach.

Implications

BYU can end pre-conference play on a positive note by winning this contest.  Since they are playing a team from a lower division, it's very important that they come out of this game with a solid win to maintain national respect.  The Cougars can remain unbeaten at home this year by
winning this game.

Murray State would get a definite shot in the arm and much mention in the national media if it were able to pull off an upset against the Y.  They have nothing to lose, and everything to win in this contest.

Players to Watch

BYU

Rob Morris (LB) -- He continued his defensive heroics last week, notching 14 tackles, including 5 for a loss.

Jason Walker (WS) -- He's ranked #2 in the nation for interceptions, averaging one pick per game.  His two interceptions last week ended Brock Huard's string of 90 consecutive passes without a throwaway.

Murray State

Justin Fuente (QB) -- Fuente transferred from Oklahoma University to unseat returning starter Dan Loyd.  Through the first three games of the season, he's the ninth ranked DI-AA quarterback.

Joe Perez (WR) -- This receiver has been Fuente's favorite target this year, averaging over five catches and 82 yards per game.

Records to Watch

BYU holds the current NCAA record of 289 consecutive games without being shut out.

Injury Report

BYU

Will Snowden (RB) -- A pulled hamstring has made a serious dent in his playing time.

Murray State

None that we know of.

Murray State Gets What It Wants >From BYU: Money
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/sep/09251998/sports/53963.htm

"The Murray State Racers do not have any illusions about their role as severe underdogs against the BYU Cougars on Saturday, and Coach Denver Johnson is not afraid to describe his team even less flatteringly than is necessary.   Though the Kentucky school is 3-0 and ranked 10th in Division I-AA, Johnson said he's ``not sure, after all is said and done, that we deserve that high of a ranking.''

The Racers are a fairly typical I-AA team. They have a wide-open and productive offense and a roster that mostly pales next to the Cougars' -- yet includes a few really good players who transferred from Division I-A schools.  One of them is quarterback Justin Fuente. He's a 6-foot-2, 220-pound junior who transferred from Oklahoma, where he was a part-time starter. The Racers also have running backs from Illinois (Wilbert Smith), Purdue (Cullen Bryant) and Kentucky (Wendell Childs), a cornerback from Mississippi State (Chauncey McGee) and defensive linemen from Mississippi State (Kenneth Knotts), Miami of Ohio (Marcus Stepp) and Michigan State (Devarrio Carter)."

Miller's Choice Was Right -- Staying at BYU
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/sep/09241998/sports/53773.htm

"The Drew Miller story unfolding in the BYU football camp -- he's staying, for now -- is nothing new. In fact, similarities stretch back two decades to Jim McMahon, the original Cougar quarterback malcontent.

McMahon, who like Miller dreamed of quarterbacking Notre Dame, had been in the BYU system for nearly two years when Wilson was injured in 1978.  McMahon stepped smartly up behind center and led BYU to the WAC title.  In fact, not even the quarterbacks on the depth chart have always been safe.  In spring drills of 1981, Steve Young was a defensive back who figured he should be the No. 1 QB. Within a year, he was. Within two years, he was No. 2 in the Heisman balloting. "

Only here at BYU: Miller's mindset causes huge ruckus
The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/594EF7C773EADB938725668A001A2BF8?OpenDocument

"You gotta feel for the new guy.  Bryan Dangerfield.  He walked into a buzz saw this week, trying to handle a media rush over a backup quarterback.  Bryan is the new sports information director for BYU football, and he's been on the job about a month.  The guy's a pro who's worked for various universities and pro sports teams, but he learned first-hand this week just how crazy BYU's quarterback factory can be.  Shagging phones, juggling faxes, answering voice mails and juggling a new cell phone, Dangerfield got a taste of QBU.

"I kinda felt like an offensive lineman, trying to protect the quarterback," he said with a laugh.  "This is a high profile program. It's kind of an honor that so much attention would be drawn to a backup."  AT WHAT other university could the possible departure of a backup quarterback cause such a ruckus?"

Rob Morris Receiving National Attention

Last night on ESPN's Sportscenter, the "On Campus" segment featured linebackers.  They mentioned two linebackers (Andy Katzenmoyer - Florida and Jevon Kearse - Florida) had gotten all the preseason hype.  However, based on the few games played, Al Wilson - Tennessee, Jeff Kelley - Kansas State, and Rob Morris - BYU have really stood out.  Rob Morris's stats for the Washington game (14 tackles total - 5 tackles behind the line) were also mentioned.

Recap
http://football.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news/ap/980926/ap-murrayst-by.html

"Kevin Feterik and Drew Miller threw for a combined 313 yards and two touchdowns as Brigham Young routed Division I-AA Murray State 43-9 Saturday.

BYU (2-2) did little to resolve its latest quarterback controversy, as Feterik and Miller threw touchdown passes and led the Cougars on sustained scoring drives.  Ronney Jenkins also rushed for two touchdowns.

The Racers (3-1), who have the fifth-best I-AA offense, were largely helpless against Brigham Young's bulky front line. The Cougars allowed Murray State just 35 rushing yards on 31 attempts.

Four days after Miller was talked out of transferring from BYU by coach LaVell Edwards, the Cougars used Feterik and Miller extensively, with Feterik playing the first and third quarters and Miller most of the second and fourth.

Margin Hooks caught five passes for a career-high 179 yards. He scored midway through the third quarter after catching a short slant pass from Feterik and running 80 yards."

Druckenmiller May Not Be Long for 49ers
San Francisco Chronicle
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/1998/09/26/SP80926.DTL

"THIS IS probably Jim Druckenmiller's last year with the 49ers.  The signs are there.  One of them is the tepid response any question about him brings from coach Steve Mariucci or vice president Dwight Clark, variations on the same theme: ``We haven't given up on him yet.''

Even more telling is his position as the No. 3 quarterback. No matter how you view this, it's a disappointment to the 49ers that he didn't show enough to be designated No. 2.  Ty Detmer was brought in as quarterback insurance, because he's a proven commodity who knows the 49ers' offense very well.  If Steve Young were injured and had to miss a game, as he did for the second game last season, Detmer could step in and play well enough for the 49ers to win against most of the teams on their schedule."

Dashing Young, Merciless Offense May Be 49ers' Best
San Francisco Chronicle
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/1998/09/28/SP87078.DTL

"THE SECOND play of yesterday's 31-20 win over the Atlanta Falcons at 3Com Park, a 66- yard touchdown pass-run play with Steve Young and Jerry Rice, showed why the 49ers offense is the best it has been in years, and maybe ever.

It wasn't the touchdown itself, because that's no surprise; Young and Rice have connected 78 times in their careers, second as a quarterback-receiver tandem only to the 79 by Dan Marino and Mark Clayton.  But the play wasn't even designed that way. It became a touchdown only because Young realized the possibility.

``Jerry wasn't part of the progression,'' said 49ers coach Steve Mariucci after the game. ``He was what we call `Red Alert.' If Steve recognizes that he's open, he can go to him. He did the same thing in the Washington game.''

Young clearly has more command of the offense than he has ever had, and he has more weapons -- including himself.  Four times he ran for first downs, and three were designed plays. That's something Mariucci did not allow last season.

``Those quarterback-keepers were kind of neat, weren't they?'' said Mariucci. ``Last year, as you know, we didn't even have a quarterback sneak in the game plan until the 13th game.''  Young knew what he was doing on his runs, too, swerving out of bounds or sliding to avoid tacklers, but only after he got the first-down yardage, and sometimes substantially more. "

  News Recap (9/29/98)

Next BYU Football game

Opponent: Fresno State (0-3)
Location: Fresno, CA
When: Sat., 8pm MDT
BYU's Press Release: http://www.byucougars.com/football/releases/092898.html

"The Cougars open their final Western Athletic Conference season at Fresno State. Next year, BYU will be leaving to join a new league along with seven other teams, while Fresno State will remain in the eight-member WAC. Saturday's game will also be the WAC Pacific Division opener for Fresno State as well. FSU is 0-3 after close losses at Colorado (29-21), at Texas Tech (34-28) and at home versus Nevada-Reno (27-24)."

Morris tells fans: If you want to boo, stay home
http://deseretnews.com/spt/ym0jphmg.htm

"Middle linebacker Rob Morris, all 6-foot-2, 250 pounds of him, has a message for BYU fans — especially those who voiced their displeasure toward starting quarterback Kevin Feterik during Saturday's 43-9 victory over Murray State.  "We want (you) to come, but the people who boo stay home," Morris said. "We don't want you. Don't come to our games any more if you're going to boo."

Lineman John Tait said it's unfair to target Feterik for the Cougars' offensive woes this season.  "It's going to be real easy for the fans and everybody like that to jump on Kevin and say he's not the guy and Miller is or something like that, but we have confidence in all of our quarterbacks," Tait said. "We have confidence in the guys that come in and play. It's an offensive problem, not a one-guy thing.  We've got to work it out."

Y Travels to Fresno for First WAC Test
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/sep/09291998/sports/54574.htm

"Now, it starts for real.  Having convinced themselves that all of those heartbreaking moments against the nation's top teams didn't really matter because they did not affect the WAC race, the BYU Cougars get to see if the failures paid off in fortitude.  Coming off an easy victory over the Division I-AA Murray State Racers, the Cougs travel to Fresno State on Saturday.  ``Of the four games we've played, we think that Fresno -- at Fresno -- might be the toughest one yet,'' said linebacker Rob Morris. ``It's our first WAC game.  It really sets the tone for the conference. If you lose your first conference game, then you're struggling to get back. But if you win it and you run the table, then it's just easier to stay on top.  We definitely can run the table.''

BYU should be healthy, after holding safety Chris Ellison and linebacker Brad Martin out of the MSU game because of nagging shoulder and neck injuries, respectively.  Tackle John Tait should be fine, too, in spite of spraining his ankle on Saturday."

FOOTBALL: Margin Hooks had the 5th most receiving yards (179) in last week's college football action.

http://www.sltrib.com/1998/sep/09291998/sports/54568.htm

"WOMENS BASKETBALL: The BYU women's basketball program has received verbal commitments from the two best players in the state.  Mountain View's Erin Thorn chose the Cougars over Old Dominion and Duke while teammate Heather Cheesman said she chose BYU because her father, Jay, played for the Cougars.   The future Cougars are the only girls players in Utah expected to commit to major Division I colleges this year.

WOMENS VOLLEYBALL: Brigham Young's Helen Hjorth is the WAC player of the week in the Pacific Division.  She totaled 20 kills, 22 digs, six blocks, one assist and one service ace."
