I've been watching SGI's stock price spurt of late, and it prompted me to seek out the company's historical annual EPS over the past few years. It appears that Zack's is *way* out of line. Almost worse, in my mind anyway, is the fact DG Online is incorrect for 1996. I suppose the lesson to be learned here is that we should always check multiple sources when it comes to company financials. I tend to think that the 10-K is the definitive source. The 10K would be the most definitive source in that it will clearly spell out any non-recurring events, charges, special dividends, splits, etc. However, it can be difficult to wade thru a 10K and subsequent 10Qs unless you are an accountant or have good knowledge of accounting treatment of various items. I am surprised at the wide range of nrs you got from those sources, would have expected at least some of them to have agreed for some of the years. Never having been a wirehouse analyst, I can only speak from what little I have learned from reading their reports. It seems to me that when they set a "price target" they largely disregard market conditions. Rather they project revenue and earnings growth over the next (typically) 12 months, and base the price forecast on that. Depending on the industry and the situation, the forecast may be made on the revenues or the earnings. They may adjust the target up or down depending on how fast the co is growing. And they generally disregard the potential for new competition and/or better products entering the mkt place. With newer cos, they often base it on what percentage of the overall market that company will have captured by then. Typical earnings or revenues multiples of the industry are considered and usually used as limiters. The danger in targets is that a major wirehouse will often cut their ratings on a stock which reaches a target too soon (giving their brokers an excuse to sell and generate a commission and cash to buy something else). This often happens regardless whether the target remains valid. Look at the news on At Home (ATHM) today for another example of the danger of a stock moving to fast. In this case, it is a recent IPO not even a month old, and has already more than doubled. The underwriters just came out of their "silent" period when typically they would be initiating a "buy" rating. Instead they are hedging with neutrals and attractives due to the high price. Some are openly commenting that a co losing 60 some cents a share doesn't deserve such a high mkt cap. May be a ploy to knock the stock down and either gain some inventory or cover a short position, or may be their legitimate opinion, only time will tell. Ten minutes or so of DLing and I was back in business. Sure would be nice if they gave an error msg to tell us this stuff. Peter, I agree with your suggestions. I can understand why they might not want to incorporate color into the printed product, but doesn't seem that hard for the Online version. After all, they are already using it for the moving avg lines. While including all the basic CS nrs and data in the "reports" doesn't seem that difficult, I still feel they should provide some kind of screening device to allow each user to set his or her own parameters and which items of data they wish to capture. For some reason, the Q2 nrs are not yet entered on the chart, but they were revenues of 41.8million, up 36.4% and net of $4.7mil (.32/sh), up about 40%. thinly traded (ADV 34,300 shares), issue of 14.7 mil shares Since the price and vol spike, vol has been dropping and price holding. If this pattern holds, since it is already fairly extended, would prefer to watch for another vol spike before entering a new position. Short base, trying to break out on volume (48 K vs ADV of 20K), hit a new high today. Despite the small issue of 8.4 mil share and even smaller float of 4.8 mil shares, looks like it may be trying to break out of its trading range of 9-14 for past 3 months. Spread has periodically tightened, was only a quarter point at times today, not bad for such a thinly traded stock. CS stuff: RS 95, EPS 99, a/d B, timeliness C, growth rate 74%, debt 102% (gotta study this one, maybe I can figure how to leverage my checkbook?), u/d only a measly 1.1, estimate for 1997 is .70, and did .27 thru 6 months.
