I don't think it quite had a breakout, although its a pretty close call on 9/22. The conventional wisdom is to avoid C&H patterns that decline more than 30% or so unless the decline is attributable to a bear market. The stock has to make a pretty good run just to get back to old highs when the base is so deep. Looking at the CHKP breakout today, would one have called this a good canslim buy this morning? Or, would one say it has upward biased handle B/O that is prone to fail and it's group RS is only E. With the exception of Group RS at E, all other CS elements are excellent (99 and A). Up/down ratio is 1.7, and ROE is 41%. Major wire house (Paine Webber??) initiated coverage today, hence the high volume and price move. I don't like buying on days like that, it can easily give back the gains in another day or so. Given the state of "M", and the cause of today's volume/price move, I would be inclined to expect this to become another failed b/o. Funds already own 41% of the float, but management still owns 28% of the issue. Tom, Good point about the initiated coverage today. I'm not a betting man but tomorrow will probably give back a little. This is really starting to look like last year at this time (which wasn't so bad after all). This brings up a good point about looking at the big picture when buying a stock. While my automated email trigger test did confirm the breakout, it didn't show the real background to the gain i.e., volume or news. I'm looking at several paging services. The 2-way pagers give you immediate emails but with limited querying capabilities I would still need to find a PC for conformation. With the Palm VII, one must manually check for email but can find more info about the b/o via "web clipping". Your thoughts confirm that the later piece of hardware though not immediate paging would be a safer way to trade. - -Bill - ----- Original Message ----- From: Tom Worley To: Sent: Monday, October 02, 2000 9:49 PM Subject: Re: [CANSLIM] CHKP today. > With the exception of Group RS at E, all other CS elements are > excellent (99 and A). The stock is obviously an RS leader. However, it has shown volatility around its previous high after breaking out from key resistance on 8/29. It's either an LLUR or it needs a base. Pick your poison ... I'll wait for the base. It seems the market is trying to follow through but can't... I would keep bets small unless the market shows its hand. Of course, it has been bluffing lately! As I see it the most interesting stocks in the market are: CFLO, DDIC, NVDA,MDCT(the next BRCD?),MUSE,PVTL(same business as SEBL),SMDI,VRSN,LNOP,BEAS (handle is wedging..needs time) Secondaries...ARTG(the NEW BVSN?),FNSR(sloppy but good), NTAP(may be building a flat base as the market drops?) Bill, Have you tried quote tracker? it runs in the background on your computer but will give you price triggers. You can then check the volume and intraday performance on the program. I use it for all my trading warnings. I guess this won't work if you are getting your e-mail from a palm pilot or other device. You need access to a computer during the day. I'm still waiting to get back into CANSLIM stocks. The market is still in its seasonally weak period, though it is coming to an end with the end of October. At this point, I will start looking at CANSLIM candidates when a convincing follow through day occurs. I also use MACD crossing above zero as an indicator that the weak period is over (a la Sy Harding). In the mean time, I am heavily invested in energy stocks except for my few favorite biotechs (which are for the most part dogs). I will cut back on the energy stocks on weakness, raising cash for possible CANSLIM trading this fall. From time to time, CANSLIM members may wish to browse the discussion archives. This posting provides instructions on how to access the archives. Thanks to David Cameron for compiling the essentials of this message. Here are the two ways to access the archives: 1. The best way is to use your web browser. To browse the archives, point your browser to: http://www.xmission.com/~mcjathan/cgi/lwgate.cgi/CANSLIM/ You can do simple key-word searches on the archive by going to: http://www.xmission.com/~mcjathan/canslim/search.html 2. (Not as convenient) via email: Send an email to majordomo@xmission.com with the following as the body of your message: "index canslim". Then send a follow up email to request an old email from either the "archive" or "latest" directory. Note that your request must be in the body of your email. For example: "get canslim latest/001" will retrieve file "001" from the "latest" directory. "get canslim archive/v01.n066" will retrieve file "v01.n066" from the "archive" dir.
