I don't fight the industry groups either. My point here is that CMTL is, IMHO, assigned to the wrong group! I think they belong with defense contractors and mid-cap transportation. I don't have access to those group ratings - if they were extremely negative, then I would be concerned. I think the industry group market outlook IS critical - it is much harder to swim uptide - but I like finding stocks who have been pigeon-holed in the wrong group. Cheers, Ian Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 12:00:46 -0600 From: SWald@dkwlaw.com Subject: Re: [CANSLIM] CMTL Ian, I think your reasons are valid. I am tempted to go with good stocks that happen to be in an out of favor industry. But, I am trying to track my success using the pure CANSLIM method. Under this method, "You want to look closely at the top 20% of industry groups. Studies of the greatest stock market winners show the best stocks generally come from the top 22% of industry groups. Also, you want to avoid the bottom 20% of groups. Historical analysis also shows stocks within the top half of all industry groups greatly outperform those in the bottom." So, I'm not saying you're wrong, but it is worth noting that it runs contrary to CANSLIM. I am putting together a group of people so that we can develop watchlists of stocks in all sectors of the market and know where the best moves are both long and short. Right now, I am in the process of doing sector analysis of all 31 of the main sectors of the market as composed in Telechart 2000's database and posting watchlists, chart links, and educational articles into my club site. I am using fairly simple scan strategies. I have gone through each sector looking at 90% day price performance of the "leading" stocks in each sector and subsector. This gives a very good feel as to the strength weakness of each sector and visually shows one which stocks are at or near good breakout points. I am also including in my sector watchlists important stocks, no matter what their current condition. I have posted a few articles on Dave Landry's method of using a fairly straightforward moving average scan which is excellent at picking up handles as they are forming and the right shoulder of head and shoulder top formations. I also have articles on how he uses pullbacks to take positions rather than the highly flawed limited pivot point method of WON. Please take a look at what I'm doing there and let me know if you have any interest or questions. I'd like to get a few dozen people to take a portion of the workload on analyzing a sector or two and doing a scan they might like. That would make easy work of it for everyone and give everyone access to a great set of picks!!!
