I = believe it is also in IBD, but haven't looked in a long time. It is a = simple thing, defined by DGO as: OVERBOUGHT - OVERSOLD OSCILLATOR, SHORT TERM: A 10-day moving average of the number of stocks moving up in price less = the number of stocks moving down in price (for a specific exchange). = Stocks whose price have not changed are not included in this = calculation. I monitor it to see whether the broad market / exchange is moving = differently than the big caps on that exchange. The big caps, because of = their size and typical trading volume, have a disproportionate effect on = indexes, which can then distort what is happening with the mid and small = cap stocks, they in turn are more numerous but contribute less to = volume, and often are not in the index. The overbought-oversold oscillator is a chart = available at=20 DGO. I believe it is also in IBD, but haven't looked in a long time. It = is a=20 simple thing, defined by DGO as:

OVERBOUGHT -=20 OVERSOLD OSCILLATOR, SHORT TERM:
A 10-day moving average of the number of stocks = moving up in=20 price less the number of stocks moving down in price (for a specific = exchange).=20 Stocks whose price have not changed are not included in this=20 calculation.

I monitor it to see whether the broad market / = exchange is=20 moving differently than the big caps on that exchange. The big caps, = because of=20 their size and typical trading volume, have a disproportionate effect on = indexes, which can then distort what is happening with the mid and small = cap=20 stocks, they in turn are more numerous but contribute less to volume, = and often=20 are not in the index.

OVERSOLD BOUNCE ON FRIDAY? -=20 "M"
One member suggested that this is all that = happened=20 Friday, but I disagree, at least in part. While Nasdaq was indeed = oversold,=20 it was around minus 400 on the oscillator, not as severe as we have = seen=20 many times before. And up-down volume ratio was trending up all = week. So I=20 think it was more a case of accumulation passing a point of=20 equilibrium.  Volume was only average, so I don't consider it = to be a=20 "rally". In the case of NYSE, it was not even oversold, having a = plus 200 on=20 the oscillator. There also, the 10 day up-down ratio had been = trending up=20 all week, and again volume was average. In fact, volume has now been = unremarkable on both exchanges for several weeks. Last time Naz = broke two=20 billion shares was 6/29, and the chart trend remains down despite = Friday's=20 gains. The gain this week does not offset the loss of the prior = week. On=20 NYSE, the price gain prevented it hitting a new short term low, for = the=20 moment. Volume again remains unremarkable. The good news from CSCO = and=20 others on Thursday only gave a one day reason to be buying.=20
ON ECONOMICS
July Leading Indicators (these are forward = looking) rose=20 0.3%, fourth month in a row this was up.  One component of this = indicator is stock prices, which clearly did not help. A = sub-component,=20 Current Conditions, showed its first uptick. Jobless claims rose, = but 4 week=20 average still well under 400,000. Durable goods orders still shows = no signs=20 of recovery, but may be beginning to show evidence of a bottom, and = that has=20 to happen first. New Home Sales remains strong, and not only was = above=20 expectations but the highest since March. Next week is a busy one = for=20 reports, but none of major consequence.

DGO LIST
Overall list stable at 248 compared to 242 last = week. Data=20 spreadsheet will follow separately to avoid delaying this=20 email.
