The insurance companies have large holdings of bonds and some equities (still fixed income things like preferred stocks, and convertible bonds) as a part of their reserves to pay claims. For claims of the sizes that this set of incidents will generate, it is indeed likely that they will liquidate part of their reserves portfolio to pay the claims. If we assume that they will sell fixed income things (after all they have had quite a runup in price over the last year), that has a downwards pressure on prices for those things (yields will rise for fixed income items sold). Traditionally, a selloff in the fixed income market has meant that the resultant cash was flowing into the equity market. No so this time, the cash is leaving the markets. Tom W pointed this out earlier.
