Hi Gene,

It took me a number of years of buying "fallen = angels" to=20 finally understand that I was arguing with the market, and ultimately = the market=20 wins. Because of the huge drop in trailing earnings, many of the = greatest and=20 best known names in technology are still today trading at 40 or 50 (or = more)=20 times trailing earnings despite a 90% or more drop in price from their=20 highs.

I have been periodically tempted to buy a few of = these=20 "mattress stuffers" and just put them away. So far resisted the = temptation.=20

I would approach this idea by calculating the=20 projected PE, based on current earnings forecasts, and see = which ones=20 have the lowest projected PE. I would then look at earnings comparisons = for the=20 past two qtrs (to see if they are showing signs of following the = forecasts yet),=20 as well as read the earnings release for the latest quarter, seeking = ones that=20 are not only showing that the downtrend in earnings is reversing, but = also ones=20 speaking positively of the future quarters.

Finally, I would narrow the list further by looking = at the RS=20 line, and only considering ones where the RS line has bottomed, or = preferably=20 already reversed upward. Given the performance in October, that should = not knock=20 that many off the list. At that point, you have to start deciding which = ones=20 actually have a competitive edge over their industry based on their = technology,=20 product, service, etc.

It's a lot of work, but one advantage you have is = that they=20 have fallen so far, that you don't have to catch the bottom. And for the = most=20 part, these stocks will be in favor with the funds and other = institutional=20 investors for the long haul.
