Don't underestimate KKD's potential to attract fiercely loyal customers." The idea of "consistent high quality" and "fiercely loyal customers" go hand in hand, a point also made in other posts in slightly different ways, but IMHO, the key to their success. Brand recognition without a deliverable is useless. Example: CPKI. Great food, great concept, but they've been through messy reorgs and poorly managed expansions and their quality is on the skids. So much so that they are having to close newly opened locations such as the one in downtown Las Vegas. Their inability to control quality hampered their branding in a way that may not be salvageable. (Before someone starts throwing tomatoes, I'm not comparing the strength of brand in CPKI vs KKD, nor am I comparing a pizza to a KKD...my mouth waters at the smell of hot donuts and cinnamon buns, too.) This point that Tom brings up about cold stale donuts is a BIG deal. Just take one swig of a double tall nonfat latte that's been sitting on your desk for an hour and you know what I mean. With Starbucks, their delivery concept assures hot and fresh each and every time. With KKD, their new expansion strategy leaves me wondering, not doubting, per se. Your point about management effectiveness is also key. They are the archictects and executors of the strategy. So far, so good, but I'll be looking in the financials for any sign there's trouble afoot. So easy to hide poor financial planning and execution for long enough to trap unsuspecting shareholders. That's what happened with Boston Market and Einstein Bagels, but that's another story. (BTW, MCD now owns Boston Market. Einstein is owned by NWCI.)
